So you're saying Austin is whiter than other large cities in Texas and the United States?  Gosh, where did I read that before?  What exactly are you arguing with?  Of course it's more diverse than the smaller metro areas.  I didn't claim otherwise.

Austin's also ranked in the top half of large metros (>1 million) for its share of non-Anglo populations. Again, I think this largely comes down to what the posters of this board might be used to, coming from DFW, Houston, and San Antonio.

There are 56 metros in the US with more than 1 million in population. Only 19 of those (green) have a greater share of their population that is non-Anglo. It's not some lilywhite anomaly among major cities like many posters like to pretend it to be. Within Texas, yes, it lags the other big ones.

Amazingly, if you sum up the population of all the below (189,138,117) and calculate the Anglo population (93,972,324), you get a total Anglo share of 49.7% -- almost exactly what Austin's is.

If you regularly walk/run around Town Lake, you have seen that Austin has become pretty diverse. Up until a few years ago, you could probably count on one hand the number of AAs you see on the trail. Same for Asians. Now it's pretty diverse. Is it Houston? No. But it's sure not Austin of 10 years ago.

The Ancient Wonder of Maryland and Delaware being Southern has reappeared.

Maryland is south of the Mason-Dixon, Delaware in east of it. (Yep. Delaware was part of Pennsylvania once.) The Mason-Dixon Line serves no purpose in defining Southerness. It does, however define people who use it to mean "Southern" as kindly old Northern Snowbird types, similar to how "Latinx" means "I really don't know much Spanish but I want to help."

Back to the line. It didn't even define a cultural barrier for most of its length. Exhibit A: Central PA.

I can speak to my own reconnaissance that a Megacity stretches from Northern VA to Southern ME, and yet, and yet, get off the interstate and turn right, you are in the Alabama Black Belt, except it's called Southern Maryland. I paid my DC-area rent by helping take care of an old tobacco plantation over in MD. As for Delaware, been through all three counties. The two below Wilmington *could* be "southern-ish," and Wilmington could be anywhere from the Carolinas up into New Jersey.

But none of that matters. The reason Maryland and Delaware got put in the "Southern" category is because they're south of Philadelphia. This is back when Philly was the shit. Ft. Pitt was "The West," MD and Delaware are that way, down South, might as well be Virginia. NY is a bunch of Dutchmen, and New England is where they burn witches.

I wonder if the Houston numbers cool off. The schools are so bad, people won’t raise their kids here unless they absolutely have to or they don’t care/don’t know any better. Spring Branch ISD is the only decent school district inside the Beltway, and it’s so pricey only Californian move ins can afford it.

I’d like to see a Greater Houston vs HISD demographic if you have it OP.

I guess living south of Town Lake it's not as white but, honestly, NW Austin has a pretty vibrant Asian population.  It's not Houston but I don't think it's as white as some make it out to be as it does have a strong Hispanic population.

If you want super white, maybe Lakeway or Liberty Hill are more your style

You’re underselling it.

some of these spicy dry korean ramen (you boil the noodles, then drain it and add sauce packet) would burn your entire colon from throat to anus

We moved away from Austin for a stretch, living in Chicago, Albuquerque (barf), and Los Angeles for several years.  I remember returning to visit at one point and feeling uncomfortable without understanding why.  It finally dawned on me that I hadn't seen a non-white person in days.   We eventually moved back, but that was one of the big sticking points for us when making the decision.  It's improved a tiny bit in recent years, but it's still shockingly white.  I have no data, but I would not be surprised if it's the whitest city with a population of over half a million in the U.S, and by a significant margin.

This, moved away from austin over a decade ago, to the houston area.  whenever I visit it shocks me how white it is.  It’s dumb, but the lack of diversity makes me uncomfortable after living in such a diverse area

Our neighborhood is kind of a mixed bag... yeah, pretty white but a few Persian, Indian, Azerbaijani, Chinese families... several English/Scottish families, a mixed bag of Euros (Spain, France, Italy) but not as Latin as Houston.  When we looked at Lakeway, I was shocked how everyone was white.  Everyone.  And all chains.  Everything was bland and super duper blanco.  Didn't take us long to cross that off of our list after living in a highly diverse neighborhood in Houston where 80% of the families on our street had at least one family member born in another country (Vietnam, Korea, Mexico, Taiwan, India, Russia, Italy, Hong Kong) and over the years the street had families from Ecuador, France, Iran...

I'm considering getting a part time home in Austin.  Basically splitting my time between OC and Austin.  OC is weird.  Some hoods are 80% Asian, so I'm not sure that's diversity, imo, Idk, it's like you replace whites with Asians, does it make it any more diverse?  Daughters school, there's like 9 white kids and the rest are Asian lmao.  Or it feels that way.  The issue, and noone will say it out loud, is if your kid isn't an academic savant, he will have challenges achieving vs Asian kids.

Anyways, my question was, which is whiter, the Bee Caves area or the Cedar Park/Leander corridor?

That's pretty darn white but when I read your post I thought to myself, my friend's wife used to teach at Casis and his kids went there, and it's hard to imagine a more buttoned-up lily white bread elementary school than that place, so let's see how they stack up:

So you're saying Austin is whiter than other large cities in Texas and the United States?  Gosh, where did I read that before?  What exactly are you arguing with?  Of course it's more diverse than the smaller metro areas.  I didn't claim otherwise.

Dude just admit that you're wrong and move on. Or actually look up some demographic data across prominent US cities and get back to me so you can prove yourself wrong.

I think one of the main disconnects in discussions like this is that people - and especially people living there - don't understand how insanely diverse places like Dallas and Houston proper are. If you are living in those cities you are for the most part completely unaware of how utterly incredible it is that that many people of that many different backgrounds could exist together less than 100 years after intercontinental air travel was even a thing. I mean it's amazing in the literal sense of the word once you realize how ethnically uniform most places in the world are.

So then, in discussions like this, you have people lambasting Austin for how white it is and throwing around terms like "lily-white" despite it being - in context of the country as a whole - a totally baseless claim.

Don't get me wrong - Austin is plenty white. Especially in certain neighborhoods. But it isn't some American bastion of pastiness. I'm not swimming in it and as such I live in a neighborhood that's probably 80% Latino. I also drove Uber for a couple years recently and am familiar with basically the entire city. Anyone labeling Austin "lily-white" needs a reality check.

I'll close by saying I wish more black people lived here. One of the things I liked about Dallas.

I think one of the main disconnects in discussions like this is that people - and especially people living there - don't understand how insanely diverse places like Dallas and Houston proper are. TL;DR. Austin is lily white.

We lived in Cinco Ranch in Katy 10 years ago. The only metric that kept CRHS from having the highest possible rating for a public school dealt with "english as a second language, limited english proficiency" type issues.  I asked,  "What is so hard about finding bilingual teachers?" CRHS had kids that spoke 27 different languages, including 4 or 5 different Chinese dialects.  Katy-Cinco Ranch is light complected, (3,000+ kids, whites, hispanics & asians, maybe 2 or 3 kids that speak one of 20 different languages), but beneath the veneer its quite different;  I doubt many HS in America have that kind of diversity, though not the numbers.

My palate is not as diverse as the demographics, but Houston has always had great restaurants.  Every nationality has some type of quality food, and fortunately, food transcends basic prejudices.

The other side of the coin; I had no idea how many private schools there were in Houston until I started going to lacrosse games. Much different demographics, and not for the better.

Y’all’s demographic graphs made me curious about my girls’ elementary school. I have a feeling quite a few folks on this site would be uncomfortable with this. We actually really like the school and the teachers have been good to great so far.

My kids fall into both white and latino (both my wife and are white Latinos).
