I’ve posted this before, but…

If you see me wearing pants, I’m carrying (usually in my pocket).
If you see me without pants, then call Mrs. Brat to come pick me up before the cops do. 🤪

edited to add caveat: I do not carry in posted places.

You don't carry pants in posted places?  Good sir, at your advanced age, you should always carry an extra pair of pants.  I mean, unless it's a posted "no pants" zone, and then you gotta go with the rules, man.

Have owned guns my whole life. I have guns in my home.

I do not carry,  concealed or openly either one;  but figure about 1 in 10 people are carrying in Texas at any given moment-  I work directly with the public about 80% of the time. Totally gut feeling on those stats, but I am including both legal and illegal in that scenario.

I have long considered getting my CHL, but probably never will, unless we experience some craziness that puts me there.  I get the mindset that by then, it's too late.  I respect it, but it hasn't pushed me to get the permit.

I have carried many times on trips, especially in Texas where I know I'm not gonna catch hell for possession.  There are lots of stupid fucks out there.   I mainly try to avoid situations where that type of behavior is more imminent.  I don't carry on trips for any reason other than personal protection.

I have never pointed my guns at another human being, and i do not intend to except to protect others or myself.  Don't fuck with my dogs either.( that includes the cops.)

Don’t carry, don’t plan too, have small collection of hand me down .410’s. I’ll also note that I’ve been drawn down upon by a non-police officer before and been jumped in a parking lot and it didn’t change my attitude about carrying

There’s one time in my life I would’ve liked to have a gun.  And if I would’ve had one I’d probably be dead.  Wounds heal.

I’ll also note that while not a hunter myself I was raised by hunters who are safety fanatics. I had carry an unloaded gun for two days before I was allowed to try to hunt for real. We unloaded and/or broke the gun before crossing fences etc. along with make sure you walked where you damn well sure should be.

One weapon, a shotgun, for home security. Keep a baseball bat next to my bed.

Have carried lots of shit due to work.

I have on occasion taking a .40 with me on long trips but it remains in a safe hidden. Only I know where it is. Usually reason for the .40 is I have stayed in some shitty places here in Texas.

I have never carried just to go to HEB. Driving there is more dangerous. If It is open.

There's been once or twice, because holy fucking shit axes are hard to use in confined spaces, and I would have been better off with a baseball bat or hammer.

Key words being if it is open.

We had a former friend-of-a-friend who would carry everywhere, even when driving with his family from one middle-class subdivision in Round Rock to a middle-class subdivision in Pflugerville, and every day to his six-figure job at Dell.  He even carried to a kid's birthday party.  Everybody stopped inviting him over after the party, because he pulled it out in front of multiple parents and kids and asked the host where he could put it while he was there, and the gun owners at the party were far more fucking furious with him than the non-gun owners.  He could have taken the host aside and quietly asked, but nope, gotta make a show of pulling it out of his poorly-concealed holster and do it in front of kids who are going to be very interested in it, and you don't know how many or even if any of those kids have any kind of training with firearm safety.  He was always slightly creepy and into conspiracy theories and had weight and image problems (and somehow he has a normal wife and kids), but we know for a fact that he drove straight over from his house in a decent subdivision to the party at another house that was in an even better subdivision and that he felt the need to carry in that situation pretty much got himself uninvited from a lot of shit.  He still may not understand why the boardgame night invites, poker invites, birthday party invites started drying up because nobody wants anything to do with him - he's the idiot that is A) going to start shit/escalate shit where there didn't need to be any and B) he's a fucking target for anybody wanting to start shit because it's obvious he's probably carrying at times.

Very glad to have had my firearms at home on 2 occasions.

One, after recently moving in new neighborhood, and on the same week a houseguest had his car burglarized, I came home to see through my window blinds a silhouette of a stranger in the backyard. (Turns out, it was a neighbor who somehow fell through the fence into my yard and hurt himself on a nail?? Still WTF to this day)

Two, late at night, heard loud commotion coming from the garage…later localized to the ceiling above the garage…and next day coworkers assured it was commonly raccoons in the attic.

Both cases it felt secure having something with me, rather than having to burst out of the house and call the cops

I don't follow this one. You felt good to have a gun in the house to defend yourself from a) drunk neighbor who fell through the fence and b) a raccoon in attic? And your alternative was to immediately call the cops to investigate a commotion?

Employment at Dell leads to weird behavior, or is it vice-versa. Our game-nerd-group at UT in the late 90s had a dude like that minus the gun flashing. Tall bald guy name starts with G?

It's super-fucked up, and absolutely an act of aggression threatening imminent violence.

I've seen the Gravy Seals out here in Austin during their various marches at the capitol and whatnot, and I'll say this about them: every one I saw carried their weapon properly: slung, with their hands off of it.  I don't LIKE their displays, I think it's pointless....but I also didn't look at any of them as an imminent threat, because they weren't (most didn't even have magazines in -- which I also appreciated).

Wasn’t the liberal dude at the protest in Austin who got shot a few years back holding his long gun in low ready? He then made a movement and the asshole who had driven through protestors shot him from his car IIRC. Any charges in that incident?

Serious question---do you really think it's 1 in 10 overall in the whole of Texas or just 1 in 10 where you are?  Both carry a curious line of questioning for me...

-If it's 1 in 10 statewide, that means there's 3mm Texans packing every single day.  I certainly know there's that many weapons, I just don't know there's that many out and about.  But possible, I suppose.

-I know there's for sure many, many rural communities where 1 in 10 are carrying.  More like 5 outta 10 in some instances.  Which yearns for the question...what's the point of living in a small town where you know everybody if you still gotta mount up and print?  The stats behind rural gun violence v. urban gun violence (per capita of course) is very displacing.

I guess I just don't understand the lifestyle where y'all are being so vigilantly hunted day in and day out.  What are you guys doing to attract this kinda gang violence?  I mean, I've literally been threatened to be kidnapped and murdered by both Chicago Mafia and cartels and I don't open carry.  Are you guys that fucking fascinating?  Try my method next time.  Don't carry, draws attention and nobody thinks we're tough guys.

No. And I’ll happily sign on to laws that make it harder for others to have unfettered access too. I’m tired of watching news about school shootings or other mass shootings because we make guns easier to buy than cigarettes.  I wish the proponents of gun rights did more police their own. By analogy they’re like weed should be legal so let’s open it up to crack and meth as well.

How many adults in Texas?  18 million?  Adult males maybe 9 million?   I’d say 1 million people packing isn’t unusual. 900k adult males. 100k adult females?

Online searches lead me to believe less than 50% of Texans even own a gun. No fucking way 1 in 10 people are carrying at any given time. Maybe in CousinFucker Texas, but not statewide. There's a bunch of insecure pussies in this state, but not that many.

Right there with you.  I can not imagine thinking I need a fucking gun to walk my dog.  And I lived inside the loop, a few years of that a block behind El Palenque bar off N. Main on the edge of the Heights.  12-15 years ago it was quite lively with plenty of hookers working the block.  I would go for a jog at night and such a thought never entered my mind.

I know. My nephew went to get a pack of cigs last week and he had to fill out a 4474 and he is on a two week wait. He should be able to pick them up the second week of April.

Do you ever wonder about the “stories” of all those guns you’ve legally sold?

I bet most have led a truly uneventful life and some have played a part in some of the saddest and most tragic moments imaginable.

I’m no expert here. Just seems it’s pretty easy to get around common sense precautions in the purchasing process.  Quick search and I see a 4473 not 4474.  So are talking about the “lie and try” form and potential gun show exceptions?  Just send him to the tobacco convention and he can bypass the inconvenience.

A year or so ago I sold my drone to a guy who told me there is a website where people buy and sell guns. I don’t know if it’s true or not, but I asked whether it was regulated. He made it sound like it was extremely lax. It sounded very shady. I sincerely hope he was full of shit. I am sure someone here can clarify.

No.  Everyone on the ranch does because one of the kids about got really fucked up by a big sow a few years ago, and for some reason, even an hour from the border, we seem to be a thoroughfare for new citizens and their escorts.  Oh, and a guy stepped on a rattler one day, and dispatched it with a pistol.    I don’t like the feeling of a pistol on my body (fear?).  I will sometimes take one in the truck if I have the family on a long trip across state or something.  Even then I don’t like to as I won’t leave it in truck, and won’t carry it inside, so…

Do have two 9mm in biometric safe in room as I leave town for work semi regularly for 2-90 days, and it makes the wife sleep better.  She is proficient with them.  The other safes are for shotguns and rifles. I’m not a big pistol guy (obviously).  I’ve carried a knife for my entire life so I guess if I was ever in a life or death situation, I wouldn’t be down to just the hands. But I don’t have a hobby if snapping pics in the wards, so I’m probably ok.

I don’t know what website he’s talking about, but the last ~15 I’ve purchased have all been online.  Every.single.one. without exception was shipped to an FFL, no way around it.

Also I’ve never understood the “I need a gun and I need it fucking now” logic. Do you rise up against blue laws that close liquor stores on Sunday’s because you can’t plan a day ahead? Honestly if you can’t think a few days ahead maybe you shouldn’t be trusted with a deadly weapon.

You have obviously missed many of my posts regarding selling guns. You operate on what you suspect is true because you want it to be true.

It’s one of the main problems in regards to some common sense reforms that we probably would agree on.

If you buy from an ffl it has to ship from an ffl.

Private party sales can be done without an ffl.

I did one today. But I require an LTC.

Gotcha.  Many have been private sellers. I assume they are like me (but I never sell) and want to make sure they are doing everything they can to make sure they are selling to the next psychopath. Sending it to an FFL is no cost or sweat off their ass.

eta: I know f2f doesn’t require it. I was speaking more to what I’ve exclusively seen and encountered, at least on the auction sites.

@Handcruser

Maybe. I haven’t poured over your history and will give you the benefit of the doubt. If you’re for bringing sanity to a hyper emotional issue I applaud you. Even more so as someone inside an industry that has seemingly been institutionally organized against that. My comment was narrowly in response to your comment on waiting periods - and apparent aversion thereto.

But the last thing I want is for my observation about the gun industry to be true. I wish it wasn’t a bunch of 2A absolutists (including state and federally elected officials) using assault weapons as props in Christmas cards and whose only solution to gun violence is more guns. I really wish that wasn’t the case. But the proof points are few and far between
