Per my understanding, it’s actually worse than that. You can only claim losses up to 90% of your winnings. If you have  100k in tournament winnings but have 200k in entry costs, you can only claim 90K in losses for tax purposes. So taxes have to be paid on 10k even though you are a net loser.

Wow it's like they're trying to stamp out poker tournaments by the tax code or something.

Has anyone seen a good explanation of who introduced that in the first place and why?

we will never find out... it sounds like it was added at some late point in the Senate where everyone was adding their pet project ideas into this massive bill.  and whoever included it, didnt take into account the idea of negative in-year "winnings"

$1/$2 PLO game on Pokerrrr2 app. 8-handed. Played about an hour, relatively passive game so far, and nobody is raising pre flop. Hero and Villain have about $250 effective.

Villain open limps from UTG. Three others call, Hero checks BB with AQxx.

Flop is QQA. Villain bets just under half pot. Folds to Hero, who smooth calls out of position.

Turn is a 2. Backdoor flush draw is there. Check, Villain bets pot, Hero calls.

River is a J. Flush misses. Check, Villain bets half pot.

Call or raise?

Hero was scared of AA and calls. Too nitty? Villain shows KQ.

Did Villain overplay his hand? Should Hero have check raised the flop, turn, or river?

It was a "run better" joke.

I probably would have jammed on the 6 bet, but I'm sitting here in Austin and it's not my $10k on the line

Oh yeah I watched this hand live and had the exact same thought. He 6-bet jams that I think Loquet can't put him on any other hand and folds out.

I should clarify and say I'm specifically talking about the WSOP main event, which plays very differently than most tourneys early on. No one is really trying to get stacks in until the bubble bursts, so yeah you absolutely jam that and your opponent is almost always folding unless they also have aces, or kings. Even queens is probably folding there.

You're happier than a pig in shit to scoop that many blinds without having to see any more cards.

You wouldn't really think that way about most other tourneys.

I significantly disagree. Take as many chips as you can get as a 4:1 favorite. Also you’re also making him fold AQs/AK which we are even more dominant against. Also if he calls more and folds flops with an over and no 9 he isn’t even fully realizing his 18% equity.

You're 100% right in a vacuum and in any other tourney, and I know it sounds like I'm being results-oriented with regard to this specific hand.

I just think that (in the main event specifically) protecting your stack is just as, if not more, important than getting it in good as a heavy favorite. In this spot, you have a strong stack and your opponent has already put in more chips preflop than you would usually be able to extract from a weaker pair postflop (again, in the main event specifically). If they're calling your 6-bet jam you're dominating them either way and they definitely don't have 9s.

Either way, his post flop action was not great.

Disagree that “trying to protect your stack” is how you win a 10,000 person poker tournament. Getting into giant pots with massive massive equity advantages is though, which then allows you to cover other players so you don’t bust when you lose flips or get coolered also.

And postflop, SPR was just over 1 vs a range that is mostly overpairs. Postflop played itself.

I agree with everything you're saying I just think the early days of the main event are way tighter than any other tourney and most people tend to not make standard plays in an effort to not get involved in giant pots unless they flop quads or something. You're so deep and seeing so many hands that you can build up a really nice stack without a ton of risk as long as you're smart.

On the flip side, Loquet's play is far from what you'd normally expect someone to do early-ish on in the main event and he got rewarded for an insanely aggressive play considering he was below the bottom of what his range should be there.

I'm sure he knew exactly what his opponent had. I can only imagine the fucking rager I would get if I knew for sure that my opponent had rockets and I flop top set in the main event. Literally the #1 wet dream of an exploitative player.

interesting session.

sit down, but in for 300,   first hand. there is a live 5 straddle, 1 caller, im LP.... with AQss, make it 25, get 4 callers.

flop is Ks Js Tc.  First to act yeets out 100, there is a caller, and Im last to act, i call. turn is Ad.  First to act shoves for 150, other fold, I call.  hes got AJ. somehow no AJ or Q on the river.

solid start... 1 round later, I raise to 20 in LP with JTdd.  very active dude who has been getting froggy makes it 50 from the SB. folds to me, I call.  Flop is Kc Jc 3d.  He looks nervous, puts out 105 with 200 behind.   I shove.... and  after a min he calls.  turn Ac, river Tc....

I show and he shows TT..... yeesh.  so I am basically right back to 300. table gets crazy, I top off to 500, tread for a while.  froggy dude just starts insta shoving, and he goes on a fucking tear, like an unholy run of whatever he needs to hit to crush the table.

i get two small wins in to get to around 550 when I get AA in MP... lots of limps cause crazy froggy is now on my direct left. he makes it 50, gets 3 callers, and then suddenly BB announces 700.   folds to me, I call, froggy calls. everyone else folds, takes a while to figure out the side pot.  i need to pee, so I show the hand and go to the restroom..

Im told froggy had QQ that hand, doesnt matter because I come back and 1800 is in front of my seat.

minor hands until the same guy who made it 700 before (who has finally badly hurt the froggy dude and now has me covered) makes it 25 in MP,

I am button with Ac9d.  I call, froggy who is SB has rebought for 500 makes it 50,  and 3 of us call and go to the flop. Ad 8c 3c.

checks around to me, I bet out 40. folds around MP bumps it to 100.  I call.  turn is 9c.

MP bets out 100, I reraise to 240.  MP calls.

river is 9d... and MP leads out for 250.

I take a while and finally say 750.  he tanks for a very long time before folding.   i show the A9 cause Im leaving anyway

in for 500 out for  6 bucks shy of 2500.

best 1/2 session in a very very long time.

What do you guys think about WSOP giving Will Kassouf a 10 second shot clock?

I think it's karma because the guy is absolutely unbearable, I would rather listen to Martin Kabrhel 100 times out of 100 over this dipshit.
