I own too many streaming services and when ever I look for something to watch on Netflix, I'm usually disappointed.

Seriously. The new season of Love Death and Robots brought me back for a few months.

Apple+ is half the price and 10x the quality.

Extraordinary Attorney Woo (Korean audio with English subtitles). 2022 series. High functioning autistic girl raised by single father graduates summa cum laude from Seoul’s most prestigious law school. Excellent cast, production values and story lines. Give it a chance and you won’t regret it. Mrs. Llama and Little Llama were addicted after episode 1. I’ve seen three or four, all interesting and well worth the subtitle reading. Very interesting to see contrasts and similarities between our culture and theirs. Witnesses swear to to tell the whole truth and agree “to receive punishment” if they lie. Lead actress is a gem.

Just watched the Manti Teo story. Wow! Worth the watch.  There will always be questions, but at least I can now see plausible deniability.  Dude got fkd by a real trans sociopath.  If nothing else the story humanized him again.  I hope he can find peace in life. Damn.

It was done really well.

Chef's Table: Pizza is great food porn as always.

I’ve always wanted to eat at Bianco’s pizzeria. And now Tratto. Have heard great things for years and haven’t been back to Phoenix for years. He makes that dough by hand which is hard fucking work and most places, even high end neipolitan joints, use huge stand mixers which make tough gluten.

I like the fact he doesn’t give a shit about some certificate from some assholes in Naples. Bianco makes upgrades American pizza and uses top notch Arizona tomatoes instead of importing fucking San Marzanos. Love his devotion to local purveyors and products.

Coming in October. I’m in x1000

Holy shit. The original is incredible but a remake could be another level.

Man.

WWII and Vietnam seem to have gotten most of the cinematic love, but WWI was truly horrific and grim and if this is an unflinching take on that I might not be able to stomach it. But I’ll try.

WWI is as you say regarding cinematic love. It was a horrific war fought for no good reason. I'm no scholar on the subject, but I feel like I know enough to suggest that the history of this war be taught all over the world to all young people.

Very much looking forward to seeing the new interpretation. The Thin Red Line was the first book I read in high school (on my own) that brought actual war to my imagination. So brilliant. I read ACOWF as an adult and see it as similar in power.

PS I've been told the better translation of the title is All the Same on the Western Front which fits better I think. Any German speakers have an opinion?

Darkest Hour, Winston Churchill drama covering when he became Prime Minister, and the evacuation of Dunkirk, basically May-June, 1940.

Gary Oldman got an Oscar for it, he was amazing.

Oldman in Tinker,Tailor,Soldier, Spy was amazing, but his portrayal of Churchill was beyond that.  Great movie with excellent acting.

WWI was such a ridiculous slaughter. I have read that 1/3 of French men 18-25 died in that war. Wiped out a whole generation.

At the Somme the British had 60,000 casualties the first day.

Battle for Passchendaele is believed to have caused 500,000 casualties total and moved the line a few hundred yards before giving it all up. Horrific indifference to human life. And all it accomplished was to set the stage for the next one 20 years later.

Anyone watching "Mo?" Semi-autobiographical comedy/drama from comedian Mohammed Amer about a Palestinian immigrant who grew up in Houston navigating his day-to-day as an undocumented immigrant seeking asylum. We're 3 episodes in. Pretty heartwarming and fun:

There's a thread that hasn't gotten a lot of traffic on it, but I was entertained by the first season.

The First World War was horrific. Our civil war might have been worse carnage wise because it was the first war with modern rifled long guns but fought with mostly napoleonic tactics (closed ranks in particular killed tons) by both sides, as their generals all went to West Point. Shiloh had 24000 deaths in a day and a half. Chancellorsville had about the same.

At Shiloh the farmers mostly raised hogs that roamed free. The night of the first day of battle, the immobile wounded and dead still lay in the battlefield. The feral hogs were attracted and ate the dead and wounded, their horrific screams burning the ears of both camps.
