Serious question about AOC since this post got bumped:

Why has the attention from both sides (good-- hype/hope; bad-- harassment/ridicule) fallen off a cliff? As even seen here, you couldn't get away from AOC on news cycles or topics for a long time and this thread is 255 pages, but the last year or year and a half it's as if she's not a lightning rod for folks anymore.

Has she evolved and matured into being a politician and heads down on the hard work, etc. and is now part of the establishment (versus a bar tender/fish out of water in Washington)?

Did the far right lose the lust to harass this poor lady? Moved on?

Is she just not incendiary anymore to people?

TrumpCo no longer has the megaphone to drive base hatred of "the Squad", etc.  He's distracted by his indictments and other legal matters, and that base simply doesn't know what to do w/o being spoon fed the daily talking points.  It doesn't help that the major right wing media source (FOX News) has slowed its interest in carrying his water, either.

That makes sense. So, essentially, she was a "celebrity" created by far right/FoxNews in order to drive outrage, and those entities are busy with the implosion. Checks out.

She was never what she was accused of being -- socialist, dumb, whatever.  She just doesn't have to fight off as much bullshit these days, and to her credit, she just gets to work.

I always have had a respect for her abilities and glad she can work unencumbered then.

I will say, without the villains to be a thorn in her side, we lose the clever and biting tweets and clapbacks that she was unrivaled at fighting back with, which is kind of a shame for stupid reasons of petty entertainment and being a fan of online/millennial humor.

But definitely better to have our politicians focused on serious work then snatching weaves on twitter, but I was there for it, and miss it, I guess I'm lamenting.

Too busy attacking Hunter Biden to go after her

Thank God Ted Cruz has stepped up and filled that void, right?

After a busy day spent fighting the liberal scourge in the aisles of the senate, you know Ted occasionally sneaks over to the house chamber in the wee hours of the morning just to sniff AOC's chair as he weeps.

He weeps partially due to the realization that the partisan divide he has helped forge ensures he can never be with this enchanting temptress from the state of NY. But mostly he weeps because Heidi's panties are too small and they're cutting off the circulation in his old man balls.

This shit is hilarious and underrated, and I know I'm not the only one who has had circulation cut off by wearing women's panties.....right guys?

Found this thread randomly when it popped up on a totally unrelated search.

I worked on the House side of the Capitol for 6 or 7 years and I was skeptical about AOC at first. But then I saw her at her first committee hearing because it was on cspan. Asking questions of the witness. Listening to the response. Asking follow-up questions. That was as a freshman. And it sounds so simple. Yet it almost never happens. Most of 'em will make a statement, and ask a couple questions. Usually it's all written for them or bullet-pointed by a staff person, and they have a pre-conceived point they're trying to make or bluster through. But AOC was doing it on the fly and actually using her brain. She is refreshing and has remained so.

While I disagree with plenty of her views, I agree that she is refreshing. She is smart and seems to genuinely care about what she believes in. We need more politicians like her, and she likely has a pretty significant future in politics ahead of her.

Yes. I don't care to explain to you what a simple Google search will afford you but they're very different. Almost like they have different names.

A slightly different name doesn’t mask the similarities between the “historically accepted definition of socialism”, and your definition—whatever it is. From the DSA website:

Quote

We want to collectively own the key economic drivers that dominate our lives, such as energy production and transportation… We want to win “radical” reforms like single-payer Medicare for All, defunding the police/refunding communities, the Green New Deal, and more as a transition to a freer, more just life.

Old boss … new boss.

Lol, it's like you refuse to do a simple google search to learn what "socialism" means in actual definition and historical practice. Were we a socialist country in the 50's before deregulation in transpiration and energy? Why did Western Europe fight the USSR, they have single payer healthcare, same thing, right? It really should surprise me anymore that the right gets away with this nonsense when their followers literally refuse to learn anything other than fox news talking points.

I don’t know what socialist policies are being discussed in the whole U.S. at any given time, and neither do you.

But if you want to narrow it down, then go to the DSA’s website and you’ll find a partial listing of their ‘wants’. I’ve already referenced one: defunding the police.

I know…I know, the word defunding doesn’t really mean defunding; it means what you say it means. It’s sort of like the word socialism; you can change the meaning to fit the argument.

Ok, we'll start here.  What do you think "defunding the police" means, and why do you oppose it?

If so inclined I’m sure I could find a politician or two who, at one time or another, meant abolishment when they used the word defund. But most people (like me) took it to mean a reallocation of resources from the police and directed to other personnel.

No, I’m not in favor of cutting police budgets. Most big city police departments are bloated and relatively inefficient, but no more so than most large government and union entities. If additional or unique resources are needed, then fund them separately, without cutting the police budget.

But it really doesn’t matter what ‘defund’ means to me or you; the word is mostly off-limits now. Most deft politicians, even the left-leaning extremists, run from that word like it’s the plague. As an example, in his Mar. 1, 2022 State of the Union address, President Joe Biden declared:

Quote

We should all agree: The answer is not to defund the police. It’s to fund the police. Fund them. Fund them. Fund them with resources and training.

The phrase is dead, as is the movement. All that is left is Surly banter.
