Oklahoma is hiring Texas Tech wide receivers coach Emmett Jones, sources confirmed to FootballScoop.

ZACH BARNETT        20 HOURS AGO

Oklahoma is hiring Texas Tech wide receivers coach Emmett Jones to coach the same position, a source confirmed to FootballScoop

Jones fills the position created by Cale Gundy's August resignation, weeks before his 24th season on the staff. L'Damian Washington coached the Sooners' wideouts during the 2022 season.

Jones played wide receiver at Texas Tech and UTEP and began coaching in the Dallas area from 2001-14 before joining Kliff Kingsbury's staff as director of player development, then moved to wide receivers the following season.

Jones coached wide receivers at Kansas from 2019-21 before returning to Lubbock on Joey McGuire's staff.

Jones spent three seasons as the head coach at South Oak Cliff, which has won the last two Class 5A Division II state championships in Texas. Nearby Duncanville and DeSoto won crowns in the state's two highest classifications this past season.

Jones inherits an OU wide receiver room that returns two players who caught more than three passes in 2022. Oklahoma signed two wide receivers in the December signing period

Sources: Zach Arnett, Mississippi State closing in on veteran SEC coordinator, O-line coach

Arnett is adding Will Friend to coach the Bulldogs' line, working to finalize a deal with Mike Bobo as offensive coordinator

JOHN BRICE        JAN 6, 2023

Zach Arnett appears to have his offensive coordinator – and his offensive line coach.

It’s a pair of highly regarded coaches with deep-reaching Southeastern Conference ties, too.  Multiple sources tell FootballScoop that Arnett is targeting Mike Bobo, working to finalize a deal, and Will Friend to run the Bulldogs’ offense and coach their offensive line, respectively.

No deal is completed with Bobo, but the two sides are deep in discussions. Bobo is a senior offensive analyst at Georgia, which faces TCU Monday night for the College Football Playoff championship.

Friend’s addition to the Bulldogs’ staff already is confirmed, per multiple sources. He was in Starkville, Mississippi, at the MSU football offices Friday, per sources.

A veteran offensive play-caller who rose to national notoriety at the University of Georgia, where he also starred as a quarterback, Bobo has been a head coach at the Football Bowls Subdivision level at Colorado State and coordinated SEC offenses at Georgia and Auburn, among other stops.

Bobo hardly is the only potential play-caller to have discussions with Arnett. Kendal Briles was a top Bulldogs' target, per sources, until Briles agreed to terms on a new deal with Arkansas and elected to remain atop the Razorbacks' offense. Texas Tech's Zach Kittley and Ole Miss passing game coordinator John David Baker, both coaches viewed as among college football's top young offensive minds, also had been vetted by Arnett and the Bulldogs, per sources.

Friend has coached at numerous college programs in the South, including Georgia, Auburn, Tennessee; he’s a former starting offensive lineman at Alabama.

Earlier this week, Friend had reportedly agreed to join Ryan Silverfield’s University of Memphis staff as the Tigers’ offensive line coach, but he’s long been extremely close friends with Bobo and also has the deep ties to coaching and recruiting in the SEC.

Looks like no Mike Bobo ??? 🤔

Zach Arnett hires Group of 5 coordinator to run Mississippi State offense

It was clear early on that new Mississippi State head coach Zach Arnett's vision for the Bulldog offense was different than his predecessor and former boss, the late, great Mike Leach.

Now we know who will execute that vision.  According to multiple reports on Thursday, Appalachian State offensive coordinator Kevin Barbay has taken the same job at Mississippi State.

The 2022 campaign was Barbay's first (and only) season at App. Prior to that, Barbay spent three seasons at Central Michigan, including 2021 as offensive coordinator.

This past season, Barbay ran the ball 40 times per game, a number that nearly doubled Mississippi State's 22.7 totes per game average, which was a distant last place in FBS.

Clearly, Barbay's offense will, in part, play ball control to protect Mississippi State's defense.  Appalachian State ranked in the top 25 nationally at 6.56 yards per play, 8.4 yards per attempt, and 34.9 points per game.

A native of southeast Texas, Barbay spent the first 11 years of his career in the Lone Star State -- including two seasons as the head coach at San Antonio Warren High School and two seasons as the wide receivers coach at Lamar -- before joining Jim McElwain's operation as the director of player development at Colorado State in 2014.

That proved to be good timing. Barbay came along in 2015 as the director of player development at Florida, a job he held through 2017.

When the staff broke up after the 2017 campaign, Barbay spent 2018 as the offensive coordinator at Stephen F. Austin before re-uniting with McElwain as CMU's assistant head coach and wide receivers coach.

Sources: Lane Kiffin, Pete Golding working to finalize key addition to Ole Miss defensive staff

New Rebels defensive coordinator Pete Golding is set to reunite with a former Alabama colleague

OIP.N-wxN5MP2KzJiJ6CFA8LeAHaFj?pid=ImgDe

By:  JOHN BRICE           25 MINUTES AGO

Mark Orphey is leaving the Big Ten for a return to the Southeastern Conference and a reunion with Pete Golding, sources tell FootballScoop.  After spending this past season as the cornerbacks coach for Greg Schiano’s Rutgers staff, Orphey is finalizing a deal to reunite with Golding on Lane Kiffin’s Ole Miss staff.

Orphey and Golding spent the 2021 season together on staff at Alabama, where Golding was defensive coordinator and Orphey was an analyst working with the Crimson Tide secondary for the SEC-champion and national runner-up Crimson Tide.

Following several days of courtship from Kiffin and Ole Miss, Golding departed Alabama late last week for the defensive coordinator spot at Ole Miss; Golding has deep family ties in Mississippi and began to rise to acclaim with coaching stops in the Magnolia State at both Delta State and Southern Miss.

Orphey’s experience in the SEC isn’t limited to his one-year run at Alabama; he spent several years on staff at South Carolina under both Steve Spurrier and Will Muschamp.

Additionally, Orphey has two seasons’ experience coaching in the secondary at Utah State and was part of Montana State’s staff in 2018, when the Bobcats had a breakthrough season that culminated in a return to the Football Championship Subdivision Playoffs.

Baylor to Hire Oregon State RB Coach AJ Steward

MATT GALATZAN.      3 HOURS AGO

Following the exit of the Baylor Bears' top assistants, running backs coach Justin Johnson, questions began to swirl on who would replace the now-Texas Tech-bound coach.

And on Tuesday, the Bears seem to have found the answer to that question, with reports surfacing that Baylor will hire Oregon State running backs coach AJ Steward to the position.

Steward now heads to Waco after two seasons in Corvallis with the Beavers.

Under Steward, the Beavers ranked fourth in the Pac-12 and 28th in the country in rushing in 2022, averaging 196.46 yards per game.

In 2021, the Beavers were even better, ranking No. 3 in the Pac-12 and No. 20 in the country, averaging 212.31 yards per game.

By comparison, the Bears ranked 43rd in the country and sixth in the Big 12 in 2022, averaging 182.38 yards per game.

The Beavers also had 36 rushing touchdowns in 2022, to the Bears' 34.

Before heading to Corvallis, Steward also had stops at BYU and Arizona, and spent five seasons as the running backs coach for the Rice Owls from 2012 to 2017.

As a player, Steward was a tight end at Kansas, playing in 37 career games.

A few familiar names on mensa's FAU staff

FAU Football: Tom Herman announces 2023 season staff

Herman has previously worked alongside three of the 10 assistants on his coaching staff.

Quote

In a little over a month after his hiring, head football coach Tom Herman has announced his coaching staff for the 2023 season. Herman will be entering his first year leading FAU to a season headlined by change, as the Owls join the American Athletic Conference and endure several roster changes.

Offense

Newly appointed offensive coordinator and quarterbacks’ coach, Charlie Frye, spent last season as an offensive analyst and analytics coordinator at Penn State University. With the help of Frye’s offensive mind, the Nittany Lions made a trip to the 2023 Rose Bowl, where they took down the University of Utah 35-21.

Chad Lunsford will be taking over as tight ends coach and special teams coordinator. Before arriving in Boca Raton, Lunsford spent several years coaching at Georgia Southern University. Starting as wide receivers’ coach in 2013, he held several assistant positions with the Eagles before being promoted to head coach in 2018. Multiple Georgia Southern players earned All-American honors during Lunsford’s tenure, which included a 26-17 overall record and three bowl game appearances.

Ed Warinner will be returning as run game coordinator, offensive linemen coach, and assistant head coach. Warinner and Herman previously worked together at Ohio State University in 2014 as co-offensive coordinators. With Herman and Warinner leading the offense, Ohio State went on to win the inaugural College Football Playoff National Championship against the Oregon Ducks. Warinner has been a part of the FAU Football team as offensive linemen coach since 2021, but will now be taking on a larger role.

Another new face to the offensive coaching staff is David Beaty who will be the wide receivers coach. Beaty served as the co-offensive coordinator for the Houston Gamblers of the United States Football League, as well as a consultant at the University of Texas in 2019 while Herman was still head coach. Beaty has coached at multiple Power Five programs throughout his career, including Texas A&M and the University of Kansas.

A returning face is Chris Perkins who will resume his role as running backs coach. Perkins joined FAU in 2017 as a player development assistant, but worked his way up to his current position in 2019. The former XFL and Arena Football League quarterback took a year off from coaching but is looking to help build a championship team with Coach Herman.

Defense

Herman brought back defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Roc Bellantoni. Bellantoni  served as defensive coordinator for the Owls in 2014. Before returning to FAU, Bellantoni spent two years at Auburn University as a defensive analyst in 2021, assistant coach, edge rushers coach, and special teams coach in 2022.

Everett Withers will serve as assistant head coach and defensive pass game coordinator. Withers has had experience at the pro level with the New York Giants as a defensive backs coach in 2019. He previously served as head coach at Texas State University from 2016 to 2018.

A former professional football player, South Florida native Brandon Harris will serve as co-defensive coordinator and cornerbacks coach. Harris was a member of the University of Miami Hurricanes, until he was drafted in the second round of the NFL Draft in 2011 to the Houston Texans. Harris’ last coaching stint was with Florida International University, where he was an assistant coach in 2021. Harris joined FAU in 2022, but transitioned to his current role in January 2023 and will help Bellantoni coach the defense.

Derrick Gibson will retain his position as safeties coach for FAU entering the 2023 season. Gibson is also a former NFL draft pick, having been selected by the Oakland Raiders in [year]. Gibson was a part of the 2002 Oakland Raiders team that appeared in Super Bowl XXXVII against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where the Buccaneers won 48-21.

Roosevelt Maggitt will serve as defensive line coach. Maggitt served as interim defensive line coach for the University of Houston Cougars in 2015, when Herman was the head coach. Maggitt also previously served as assistant director of player personnel for the University of Texas-San Antonio in 2022, during which time the Roadrunners ranked 22nd in the nation and won the C-USA Championship.

Former Alabama assistant coach Dan Enos hired as Arkansas offensive coordinator

Quote

Former Alabama assistant coach Dan Enos has been hired for a second stint as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Arkansas, the school announced Thursday.

Enos, 54, spent the last two seasons in the same position at Maryland, where he worked under former Alabama offensive coordinator Mike Locksley. While with the Terrapins, he also helped mentor former Alabama quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa.

Enos was previously offensive coordinator at Arkansas from 2015-17 under Bret Bielema. This time around, he replaces Kendal Briles, who was hired earlier this week at TCU.

Enos was Alabama’s quarterbacks coach and assistant head coach in 2018, but left abruptly after that season to become offensive coordinator at Miami. It was reported at the time that Enos left Tuscaloosa for the Hurricanes without first informing head coach Nick Saban of his plans.

A quarterback at Michigan State in the late 1980s, Enos has also worked at Northern Michigan, Southern Ilinois, Western Michigan, North Dakota State, Michigan and Cincinnati. He was head coach at Central Michigan from 2010-14, posting a 26-36 record.

Forgot this... “Hey, where the fuck is Dan?”

Nick Saban was reportedly not plugged in about Dan Enos’ job opportunities outside of Alabama.

Enos spent the 2018 season as Alabama’s quarterbacks coach and moved to Miami in the offseason to be the Hurricanes’ offensive coordinator under new coach Manny Diaz. That move to Miami came as an apparent surprise to his head coach.

According to the Athletic, Saban was fully expecting Enos at the team’s regular staff meeting on Friday, Jan. 11. Except, unbeknownst to Saban, Enos had been in talks with Miami about their offensive coordinator vacancy. And when Enos didn’t show up to the meeting, Saban asked where he was multiple times.

Former Ravens safety Ed Reed will no longer coach at Bethune-Cookman, says school won’t ratify his contract

Story by Ryan McFadden, Baltimore Sun

Quote

In a sudden turn of events, former Ravens safety Ed Reed will no longer be the head football coach at Bethune-Cookman, the Hall of Famer announced Saturday.

In a statement, Reed said the school won’t be ratifying his contract after weeks of negotiations.

“[Bethune-Cookman] won’t make good on the agreement we had in principle, which had provisions and resources best needed to support the student-athletes,” Reed said.

“I was committed to coaching and cultivating a relationship with the university, players, community and the fans. It’s extremely disappointing this won’t be happening.”

Reed, who most recently served as the chief of staff for Miami, reached an agreement in principle to become head coach Dec. 27, just weeks after Hall of Fame defensive back Deion Sanders was hired at Colorado after turning around the football program at Jackson State, which plays in the Southwestern Athletic Conference with Bethune-Cookman.

Reed, 44, was meant to replace coach Terry Sims, whom the program parted ways with in November. The Wildcats, a historically Black university based in Daytona Beach, Florida, went 2-9 in 2022 for the second straight year.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh, who coached Reed for five seasons in Baltimore, called it a “great hire” for the Football Championship Subdivision program at the time.

“Got a great coach,” Harbaugh said. “Got a great football man. I was very excited for Ed, for one thing, because I know that he’s been working on that. ... To get the opportunity to run his own program, I know he’ll do a great job. Of course, we’ll support him every way we can.”

However, Reed quickly faced criticism for posting a video on Instagram complaining about the conditions at the school and in his office. He would later issue an apology, first to HBCU Gameday and then on Twitter.

“I(n) regards to my social media and comments about the University, staff and other institutions, I would like to sincerely apologize to all BCU staff, students and alumni for my lack of professionalism,” Reed said in the statement. “My language and tone were unacceptable as a father, coach and leader. My passion for our culture, betterment and bringing our foundation up got the best of me and I fell victim while engaging with antagonists on social media as well.

“I am fully aware of the hard-working folks at our school who are also fighting to make things better and more financially sound. I am encouraged from my communication with my [athletic director] and our administration and understand it’s a work in progress. My passion is about getting and doing better and that goes for me too.”

A Florida native and former Miami star, Reed spent 11 seasons in Baltimore, where he was a nine-time Pro Bowl selection and won the Super Bowl in 2012. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2019.

The Clemson coaching tree is growing again but this time not for the Tigers.

On Sunday, former Clemson linebacker James Skalski announced in an Instagram post that he would be joining the coaching staff at Oklahoma as a defensive graduate assistant.

This will be our fifth new OC in seven years. It's like starting from scratch every year. According to AL.com, one of the names in the hat is Dan Mullen. I always thought he was a damn good OC and QB whisperer, not so much head man. Watching the Gators shit the bed vs UGA last few years does not inspire confidence, though. Horns, Tennessee and LSU coming to Tuscaloosa this fall. It shall be interesting.

Tennessee inks Josh Heupel to major contract extension

A stellar 2022 season has secured nearly $30 million in additional commitment from Tennessee.

ZACH BARNETT             5 HRS AGO

How much were those wins over Alabama and Clemson worth to Tennessee? Time will tell.  How much were they worth to Tennessee's head coach? Around $29 million.

On Tuesday, Tennessee announced it has signed Josh Heupel to a 1-year contract extension worth $9 million per year, placing him among the top 10 coaches nationally and fifth in the SEC. He will be the highest-paid coach in the conference yet to coach for a national title; the results of the 2022 season and the subsequent extension clearly indicate Heupel will remove that moniker at some point over the next six seasons.

The extension keeps Heupel under contract through the 2028 campaign.

Just last summer, Heupel signed an extension that kept him in Knoxville through 2027 at $5 million per year, a total commitment of $25 million by Tennessee.

The new deal will keep him under contract an extra season, with a total pledge of $54 million, a $29 million increase from the previous deal.

Of course, not all of the $54 million is guaranteed -- but most of it is.  According to reports out of Knoxville, the deal is 100 percent guaranteed through Dec. 15, 2025, 75 percent guaranteed from Dec. 16, 2025 through Dec. 14, 2027, and 50 percent guaranteed thereafter.

Tennessee's 2022 campaign was its best in two decades, and the fifth best among all FBS teams according to the FootballScoop Year End Top 25. The Volunteers defeated Alabama for the first time since 2006, rose to No. 1 in the College Football Playoff rankings for the first time in the system's 9-year history, won 11 games for the first time since 1999, won a New Year's Six game since 1999, and secured their highest year-end ranking (No. 6) since 2001.

The former player, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told ESPN on Sunday that hazing was organized and widespread in Northwestern's program, often led by a group of older players called the "Shrek gang." The group would lead a hazing activity called "running," usually against freshmen or younger players who had made mistakes in practice, he said.

According to the former player, older players wearing masks would restrain the victim in a dark locker room and engage in sexualized behavior. The former player said he was "run" as a freshman and also said Fitzgerald signaled for players to be added to "Shrek's list" with a specific clapping motion during practice. He said he saw Fitzgerald make the motion at least five times since the 2020 season.
