Why?

More than a few coaches have used MAC schools as stepping stones, including Urban, Kelly, and Fleck.

Because he was a candidate for several P5 jobs.  And none of those guys you mentioned were P5 coordinators, which is a much better job than being a head coach at Akron.

Anyone who happens to watch the OUSux vs Gators NCAABM game tonight should keep an eye on Gator Senior Colin Castleton.

He's having a terrific year and at this rate he'll start showing up on NBA draft lists pretty soon.

We're not the ones you need to impress, Colin.

If all this helicopters and blockades and police escort shit is true, that seems like a hell of a dog and pony show for a venables or a lanning. Fuck.

Sounds like bullshit. One on hand you have an OU insider claiming the coach is going to be “announced” but not “introduced.”  Now there’s streets being blocked off and…helicopters for some reason?

How does a coach get “announced” at a basketball game? Unveiled over a dramatic PA announcement? Before the news hits Twitter? Seems legit!

Yeah, between this shit and Dean Blevins, Oklahoma media is making the Texas media during its coaching search look like Woodward and Bernstein.

Also, Akron is the D1 university that is most teetering on the edge of bankruptcy:

Literally, Texas State, Incarnate Word, or UT-RGV are MUCH better jobs than Akron.

And OU is apparently honoring retired coach Lon Kruger at the game tonight.  Would seem odd to detract from that previously scheduled event by announcing a football coach. I'd say no one knows the status of a potential hire and doing the typical poo slinging in an attempt to be first to report a development.  That said, I just can't see a scenario that both Rhule and Brady wanted to be in the NFL and would bail 1/2 a season in.  Makes absolutely no sense and can't image it ever happening.

A friend of mine is an OU donor.  The AD called and asked to use his plane to get Kiffen an interview.  His response was, no, he is not a culture fit for OU, get someone else's plane.

Sorry, I've been told on this forum that UT donors are the only donors who meddle.

I actually like Venables, but he doesn't scare me to death as OU's head coach.  Although, I'm one of the guys who in 1999 said, "Bob Stoops?"

I knew of him as being the hotshot DC who finally got Spurrier over the hump to a MNC. It was a ballsy hire at the time.

This is their second year in the NFL.

It's at this point in the process that if it were Texas, fans on this board would be calling it embarrassing and a total clown show. Not based on reality, of course, just based on the fact that journalists are reporting competing bullshit. You know, the same journalists that the same posters constantly call worthless and you're an idiot if you believe them.

It's becoming clearer by the day that OU was definitely blindsided by this. They're doing a coaching search and had no clue who they were going to hire when Riley left.

It's not like a normal coaching search, where somewhere during the season the team is playing bad enough, or there are other signs that the current head coach just isn't the guy, that the administration starts thinking about and looking for a replacement (like Texas with Herman last year, USC with Helton this year), and they start the offseason having done some legwork on the coaching search.

Here, OU saw its team with some ugly wins at the beginning of the season, but Riley made an adjustment at QB, and the team was in contention for a Big XII title game appearance up until the last game.  And OU was rolling with recruiting.  Suddenly Riley is gone.  I'm sure there's less of a laser-like focusing in their coaching search right now.

Hard to get good read on the time on BVs watch but looks like before 11am or 10am CST.... plenty of time.

If Venables were already the pick, he wouldn't be recruiting for Clemson earlier today. He and Dabo have too much respect for each other.
