Help please!  I neeed to buy a set of beginner clubs for my 16yo son.  He's my same height and proportions about six foot, so I think anything that fits me will fit him.

I have tried many many tries to hit golf balls consistently.  It has never worked out for me, even with lessons and all the money you can throw at a thing like that.  I'll be able to tell if a club fits me I guess, which should be close enough for boy.

He's only played once with his friends, and he wants a cheap FB Marketplace set, which is fine with me.

Or is a Play it Again Sports type of place a better bet?  Or a real golf store?

I think he just needs the bare minimum - irons, a driver, a putter, and a wedge, a bag....that's probably it.  I doubt he even needs shoes yet.

Does $150 sound like the right price for a used set?

Also, I met a guy at the gym a couple of weeks ago.  He's an instructor and he gave me his card for lessons.  $100/hr.  I asked if that was a good price or not.  He said it was a great price if I ask around.

Any advice on equipment and lessons appreciated!

When my daughter was starting, I bought her a cheap set of Strata beginners clubs. Basically cheap ass driver, hybrids, cavity back irons, shitty ass putter, and carry bag. I think I spent $200 for the set including bag.

In hindsight, I wish I would've used that $200 on "nicer" set. After a year, I built/bought her a better set, and now the shitty Strata set is just sitting in the garage.

Sooooo, get him a decent cavity back iron set. Used TM Rocketbladez, older set of named Callaway releases like Rogue, Cobra, etc. Cavity back is cavity back. Weight low and back to help get the ball up. Get cast irons, and not forged. He'll tear up the forged clubs. Then get some older hybrids. Hybrids haven't improved much. I still game a 2014 4H from Adams. Then get him a 5-6 year old driver. Something with a Max name is good because it'll be forgiving (read, spinny to help him get the ball up and reduce the slice).

If buying off ebay, I'd stay away from anything used from TM, Ping, and Titleist. There are a shitton of fake clubs from those brands. Callaway, Srixon, Cleveland don't seem to have a problem of fake clubs on ebay.

eBay is the cheapest route. I buy and sell clubs on eBay all the time.
