Minnesota Vikings reach deal with free agent linebacker Jordan Hicks

5:00 PM CT     ESPN

The Minnesota Vikings have reached a deal with free-agent linebacker Jordan Hicks, the team announced Tuesday.

Terms were not released, but multiple reports said the two-year deal was worth $12 million.

The Arizona Cardinals released Hicks last week in a move that saved the team $6.5 million on their salary cap.

Hicks, who turns 30 in July, has started 51 consecutive games, the third-longest active streak among all NFL linebackers. He played at a high level last season, registering 116 tackles and four sacks, but the Cardinals made the move to give fellow inside linebacker Zaven Collins, drafted in the first round last year, more playing time.

The Vikings already have veteran middle linebacker Eric Kendricks on their roster, but new defensive coordinator Ed Donatell has said he plans to use both the 3-4 and 4-3 schemes. Hicks thrived in the Cardinals' 3-4 and wore the green dot on his helmet, which signaled he was calling defensive plays.

Hicks signed with the Cardinals in 2019 and posted more than 100 tackles in all three seasons with Arizona, including a career-best 150 his first year there.

He spent the first four seasons of his career with the Philadelphia Eagles, who selected him in the third round of the 2015 draft. He missed 21 regular-season games due to a variety of injuries during his time with the Eagles but didn't miss a game (all starts) in three seasons with the Cardinals.

Hicks has career numbers of 638 tackles, 10.5 sacks, 4 forced fumbles and 11 interceptions.

Raiders add former AAF passing leader and Patriots practice squad QB Garrett Gilbert

Twice over the past few years Garrett Gilbert has been part of the Patriots organization. So, naturally, he’s joining former Patriots OC and current Raiders HC Josh McDaniels in Las Vegas. His agent announced the addition on twitter today.

Gilbert was on the Patriots’ practice squad part of last season. The time before that he was with the Patriots was 2014-15.

In between those stints, Gilbert has been around. He even spent some time with the Raiders back in 2015.

Gilbert has been active for eight NFL games since then, the first coming in 2018 with the Panthers.

Where he really made his name, if you will, was in the short life of the Alliance of American Football in 2019. In the league’s only eight-game season, he led the league in passing and led his Orlando Apollos to a 7-1 record in the process.

Since then, he’s gotten more opportunities in the NFL. Which is to say he actually started a couple games. He started one game for the Cowboys in 2020 and one game for Washington late last season.

Now he’s currently the one and only backup behind Derek Carr for the Raiders. At least until they add a third QB to the offseason roster.

Damn, Detroit ???     "Life Comes at You Fast"

Former Longhorn DeShon Elliott inks a one-year deal with the Detroit Lions

Cj Mumme        April 13, 2022 7:27 pm CT

Former Texas Longhorns and Baltimore Ravens safety Deshon Elliot is signing a one-year contract with the Detriot Lions.

The three-year veteran has flashed significant upside during limited playing time since entering the league in 2018. Injuries have hindered Elliot’s playing time and development over the past couple of seasons.

Elliot brings excellent versatility to the Lions’ secondary as he can help out in the box or in coverage. The 6-foot-1, 215-pounder has racked up 109 tackles and seven pass breakups in 28 games played.

The deal will give the 24-year-old an opportunity to prove himself on the field a long-term deal in the future.

Elliot turned in a unanimous first-team All-American season for the Longhorns in 2017. He tallied 63 total tackles including 8.5 TFLs while grabbing six interceptions. He was named a finalist for the Jim Thorpe award before declaring early for the 2018 NFL Draft.
