My son and I built a pinewood derby car a few weeks ago. And by "my son and I", I built the thing and he painted. the car (mostly).

We didn't go to the race because I went to the football game, and he didn't want my wife to take him. One of the other dads raced the car for us and we did pretty good. 1st place in the first heat. Good enough on the second heat to make it to the boys "championship" where he placed 7th. The top 3 boys went on to race the top 3 girls.

This was his first time participating and we have several more years to go. Hopefully he'll get more and more involved in building the car and I can pull back and just give engineering advice.

That's a pretty sweet paint job.

I think my dad "built" every car I ever had and I painted. Pretty par for the course for most PW Derby cars I'd say.

I’m already thinking about next year’s car. We’ve been looking at pictures and the boy wants someone being shot out of a canon. “Daddy, all we have to do is carve the wood to look like a canon.” 😀

I want to win this bitch next year. Speed all the way, no aerodynamic drag at all.

Not sure how this launches PW cars.

My grandfather had a custom pair of Tony Lamas from about 1950. My grandmother gave them to my cousins dipshit husband. They get divorced. She doesn’t get them back. Grandmother is distraught that they aren’t in the family, and she passes away.  Randomly run into cousin’s ex and ask if he still had them and I’d buy them from him. Still had them and gave them back to me for free. So he’s not a dipshit in my mind anymore and i have some pretty sweet custom Tony Lamas. Grandmother would very pleased.

My FIL had 4 girls no boys. I was the first to marry into the family. About a year after we got married, he gave me the Stetson his father had since I was the first "male" in the family and he wanted to pass it on before he died. Love that thing

I just spoke to a co-worker about his daughter's entry last year. He realized that if he had one of the wheels higher (not touching the track) than the other three, it made the car faster. 25% less friction = faster car. She won all her heats, and came in second to the winner, who he swears was a kit built car that probably cost more than $40.

Good luck next year

i thought they were supposed to check for the bent axel/all tires touching.  it's a known exploit but it's been a decade since we have raced so who knows what the rules are now.

In the latest move this summer, we found an old box into which my mom had thrown old childhood keepsakes. In that box was my one and only pinewood derby car.

My dad was a great man, who spent his life in public service, and helped countless individuals and communities in tangible, life-changing ways. He was not, however, a handyman. Strange, because grandad was a carpenter. That gene skipped a generation. 20162A22-77F7-4510-9D37-3675115B28C7.thumb.jpeg.4c7e62269af8ee5222bfb42ab69a0992.jpeg

My derby car appears to be a door stopper, with holes drilled through it for the dowel axels, and wooden wheels. I recall being optimistic because I painted a lightning bolt on it and because we put the secret ingredient, graphite, in the axle-holes.

I also recall that we did not win. A single heat. Hell, looking at it now, I’m surprised it made it down the track.

I still have my ole pinewood derby car from a hundred years ago. It was same kind of deal, Dad did most everything, I did a little bit of sanding and gluing that I could hardly mess up. In fact, Dad got a bunch of cars and even built a track of our own to test them on, built several cars and found the best design. The eventual choice kicked the shit out of Pack 117 undefeated.

Funny thing is, I don't know how it was back then, but I never got an invite to the Troop competition. I didn't even realize there was one until years later. No telling how far it could have gone.

A couple of years ago the Cub Scout troop let the Girl Scouts participate. My two daughters took 1st and 2nd place. The Girl Scouts weren’t invited back the following year.

It’s all about axle smoothness, and weight location, and a kick add paint job of course.

I'll assume this isn't the FIL you killed?

Some pics of the car. The paint job is good from far, but far from good.

According to the intergoogles, the fulcrum should be 1” in front of the rear axle. Our car was back heavy with 3 of the weights sticking out the back. But I think with the weights in the back, the more potential energy is what gave it the extra kinetic energy.

Now my boy wants a surfer riding on a surfboard. I think that’ll work for looks and speed.

At the speeds these are at, aero is basically irrelevant. Get the weight distribution correct and remove friction (grind back the body around each axle so the wheels don't rub against the body, and as mentioned, polish the axle nails and get them perfectly straight. You can also grind them to a slight bell shape to reduce the contact surface to the wheel, if going extreme.)

  • 2 weeks later...

When Popeye’s fucks up your order in your favor, ordered the Big Box special they’ve been advertising for lunch today and instead of 2pcs ended up with 4.  Now have lunch for tomorrow.  Bonus was watching a screaming match between two customers.  It appeared Karen wasn’t happy with the employees and ol boy was standing up for them, he eventually told her to step out and she left.

I just love all these Ukrainian gaffling heavy Russian military equipment and dragging them back to their farms with tractors.  What is Petyr the farmer going to do with a 34 ton Tor M1 surface-to-air missile system?

Why men try to do with everything they own: impress chicks.

Same thing that all farmers with cannons do, I suppose—threaten the rival football team when they feel insulted (https://aggypedia.com/aggypedia/aggy-embarrassments/aggy-embarrassments/—scroll to “Battle of the Brazos” discussion). @Randolph Duke

What kind of self-respecting man gets two extra pieces from Popeyes and says "I'll save these for later."?

That's like finding a $20 on the ground at the casino and saying "This is going straight to my savings account!"

Why should he limit his diarrhea to only one day?

you need a splitter to keep air from going under the chassis and creating drag.

I only thought about it on race day. By then it was too late. But that's definitely in the design for next year.

I'm going to watch some F1 racing this year to better understand ground effects. I'll need financing to do wind tunnel testing, so if anyone wants to help financially, I'll put your logo on the car.

Youtube has killed most of the guesswork out of building these now.

This is a must sold on AMZN. It allows perfectly aligned / cambered wheel placement. Shaves almost 1/2 second off stock car:

There’s nothing stock about a stock car.

We’re in Vancouver this week and the weather is phenomenal. Overcast all day with temperatures in the mid 40s. Intermittent sprinkles here and there.

A lot of people like the weather in Southern California where I live. But I’ll take this weather all day everyday.

Fuck that. You just described winter in Arkansas. And I can't wait until spring.
