Nill is fine. DeBoer is fine, though, I don’t understand why you scratch Dadonov. Benn and Seguin need to go. Tyler showed something in the playoffs. Jamie did not. Robo was our only player this series and the posts calling him out are laughable.

Robo was hot garbage most of the playoffs. He needs space to score. The trouble is that space disappears in the playoffs unless you create it yourself. He doesn’t have that type of game.

He played well tonight but the first goal was a terrible turnover and he wound up in the slot with no one around him. I’d trade him in a heartbeat if we could get a good return.

Duchene produces in the regular season. Benn hasn’t really done anything since ‘22 and has never been a top flight player. Duchene doesn’t belong in that category.

Benn was a great player at one time. He won the scoring title one season. He’s got nothing left at this point, though. He was simply invisible against the Oilers because he can’t keep up with their best athletes.

Deboer wtf... not a good look here

Edmonton is better and without some new blood, it doesn’t matter who’s in goal. But I don’t mind the in-game move and don’t mind the comments. Jake wasn’t good enough, and if he can’t take that criticism, fuck him. He’s not that good.

Agree with this. I keep waiting for Otter to become that shut-down goalie and he just can’t get there. Another year where he gets outplayed by somebody he should be better than — Jordan Binnington/Blues, Adin Hill/Knights, Skinner/Oilers x 2 and so on.

The best playoff series I think he ever played was against the Flames in the bubble. He hasn’t gotten back to that level since.

Robo was only reason we were in any of games 2-5. He was coming back from injury, and slow, but scored 4 of our last 5 goals. Benn has never had a season beyond 89 points and has only had 2 80-point seasons. And this is a guy that is rarely injured. He’s never been that good, and certainly has never been “great”. He’s been a 4th-line talent for much of the last 5 seasons.

Agree with this.  This team needs to be built around the Fins and Harley. Everyone else is expendable even if it means we get worse. But, Robo is a part of that. Wonder why Mikko disappeared?  Because like Robo he can be taken out of a game. This team needs Roope to be better. A more prolific scorer and creator for Mikko and Robo. Or, we need to get worse and go find guys like him. Right now, he’s a poor man’s McDavid/McKinnon, and our best player doesn’t approach Draisatyl/Nugent-Hopkins/Makar.

I'm a firm believer that the skating 11/7 did a number on Rantanen. Performances before and after are distinct and looked markedly slower. about 18 minutes a game up to 25-26 in his frame and intensity of playoff hockey

Those guys don’t exactly grow on trees.

Jury is out on Rantanen for me. I want to see him get a full year with this team. Roope is a nice player. He’s fast as hell but he’s hurt a lot. He should probably be the #2 center on a Cup winner. Again, I’m really, really disappointed in the egg laid by Wyatt this postseason. I hope we hear that he was battling something because that needs to be our guy.

Our trouble is that we don’t get top five picks often. We got Miro at #3 and I can’t think of another top 10 pick in all the years we’ve had the team in Dallas. We aren’t going to get a shot at McDavid, Matthews, Bedard, etc.

I disagree on Robo. But I haven’t looked at any of the advanced stats. It’s just my gut.

At one time, Benn was a premiere power forward in the NHL. Those days are long gone.

Yeah, I know and agree with all of this. I’m just not sure coaching can overcome McDavid when he’s paired with Draisaitl and an RNH that played to his 1-1 paper this series. CMc and LD are the best 1-2 punch in hockey and it isn’t close. Edmonton was BAD for years and got those three guys with the 1, 3 and 1 overall picks.

Hintz is a good, talented player but it doesn’t translate to enough points because he’s hurt a lot as you said, which affects his playoff performances. Mikko and Robo need him to be more consistent. Those are the 3 guys I wouldn’t want to lose offensively, and Miro and Harley defensively. I’d put everyone else on the block if speed is the return.

If you’re relying on any of our guys individually you’ll be disappointed. But Robo has 394 points in 374 regular season games played. Benn has never sniffed those numbers and was never a premier anything in the league. Robo, for all the bitching about his playoff disappearances, has 40 playoff points in 48 games. The reason he doesn’t have that 1 point average is largely because he was working himself back after injury and had 1 point in 6 Winnipeg games.

Man, I forget that Nugent-Hopkins was a 1-1.

I looked it up. We've had four top 10 picks since the Stars moved to Dallas in 1993:

  • 1993: Todd Harvey (1-9)
  • 1996: Ric Jackman (1-5)
  • 2009: Scott Glennie (1-9)
  • 2013: Val Nichushkin (1-10)
  • 2017: Miro Heiskanen (1-3)

I liked the mix of this year's team better than last year's. I think we're getting closer. This is why I want Edmonton to win the Cup. Get it out of the way. If the Oilers are still hunting for the elusive Cup next year, I fear more of the same is in store for us -- and the rest of the West. Just rip the band-aid off and let them get it. The hangover will be so bad for them, they might not even make the playoffs next season. (They will but humor me. Maybe they're a wild card that gets in -- and then nobody wants them in Round 1.)

I know we can't bring everybody back but I didn't feel like there was a black hole on the blue-line this season like last year when Hakanpaa went down. I like Duchene quite a bit. I don't like him being our leading regular-season scorer and then scoring ZERO points in 18 playoff games during 5-on-5 play. That's practically impossible.

About Duchene, he’s absolutely an embodiment of the team: a lot of good players. Depth is great. But only (multiple) great players can overcome a team like this and Florida. We need Wyatt to develop, and fast, and Roope to be more consistent. And I wouldn’t pay Duchene big money to stay, and would absolutely not pay Benn anything more than chicken feed at his next opportunity.

Benn was an elite power forward up until about his age-28 or age-29 season, which IIRC is about when power forwards historically start their decline in the NHL. He was a top-10 overall point shares player in the NHL for three or four seasons there. He was an elite player. Was. Hasn't been for a number of years.

After tonight, Robertson has 44 career points (18G, 26A) in 55 playoff games. Seven of his 18 goals and 11 of his 26 assists have come on the power play. That's 40% of his production coming on the power play. Compare that to 29.4% of his career regular season points coming on the power play. Your top scorer(s) need to be able to get it done on 5-on-5, with a man advantage -- whatever. I said it back during his first swim through the playoffs in 2021-22 when he had 41 regular season goals and got one in a first-round loss to the Flames (the aforementioned Otter series). I wondered if he could ever become a consistent postseason scorer. Three seasons later, we still don't really know.

Benn's contract is over soon enough. At that point, nobody will pay him very much. Same with Seguin. They'll either sign team-friendly deals to chase a Cup, go somewhere else or retire. Nill isn't stupid. He will not overpay for those guys. Duchene should be a #2 or #3 center. Great guy to have on the team but he cannot be your leading scorer, at least not the guy you depend on to get goals.

I like what we did to get Rantanen. Elite players like that don't come available very often. And it just cost us Stankoven and a draft pick. Make that trade every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

One of the best front offices in the nhl voted on by peers. But yea, fire Jim and clean house.

Wasn’t the Dallas front office called the best in the league by peers? That is high praise.

It seems the problem the Stars have, besides the occasional flaky Otter game, is that the team fell into three problematic categories this year:

1 over the hill guys - Benn, Seguin, Duchene

2 not yet to prime guys - Harley, Johnston, Back, Etc

3. injured prime guys - Robertson, Miro, Roope, etc

So did injuries do them in? Not enough time together with Mikko? Do they just need to let the young guys mature a bit and push out a few of the olds? Is DeBoer over performing with less talent, or underperforming with a lot of talent?

Doesn’t seem like they need to tear it down, but need to figure out the right tweak, not the wrong one. I thought Mikko was it, because of the problems they had on offense before his arrival, but so far that hasn’t worked out that great. The Dallas offense at times seems plodding, and on defense they are often fighting off 2:1 and 3:2.

I'm excited to see what will become of Lian Bischel as he gains the confidence to realize he belongs in the NHL. When he reduces or eliminates the timid part of his game, opponents will need to scheme around him. He adds a more forceful but still skilled piece to our defensive game. Having Miro miss so many games really allowed some D to develop!

I think the Stars need to resist the urge to throw everything away in response to last night and this series. (I don't think they will. Nill is the best executive this team has had since Bob Gainey. DeBoer is the best coach we've had since Hitchcock.) Edmonton is a fantastic team -- and the Oilers played a great series. I was worried about them coming into the series and it played out just as I feared. This is a Stars team that's been in the final four three consecutive years. They are close. Extremely close.

Benn is a UFA as his $9M annual contract ended last night. Seguin's $9.85M annual contract runs through the 26/27 season.

Here's a look at current contract situation: https://www.spotrac.com/nhl/dallas-stars/overview

Those Dumba/Lyubushkin contracts aren't great, buddy, and they run through next season.

While I appreciate the pound of flesh, you have to be really careful about that in the playoffs.

Deliberately trying to crack back at an Edmonton player (let's say Darnell Nurse for sake of argument) is unlikely to leave much of an impression. If it's something insane with an intent to send a message (Derian Hatcher is my favorite Star), then you're likely to draw a 5 minute major penalty and get that player suspended for a couple games. Anything else is probably just going to be a 2 minute minor penalty and go unnoticed by the target.

In the regular season, you might be able to do that. In the playoffs, the score is just too important to casually feed Edmonton a PP.

Now, one area where I'd like the Stars to improve is body mass on the front lines. We've got speed and skill. I think the playoff struggles would be helped by being able to forecheck with sufficient ferocity that we earn more turnovers and are able to punish opponents while still pretending to stay within the rules. Benn used to be able to do that, but he arrives long after he'd be useful these days.

Posted (edited)

the stars, on average per player, are a pound heavier than the oilers. size/weight wasn't the issue here.  I think the post mortem on this season will actually be age. we might have gotten a little too young/inexperienced. EDM is the 2nd oldest team in the league. they have a ton of experience at this point. I still maintain the cup winner is coming from the west this season, and I see no reason to change that prediction now. I think they wipe the floor with FLA. we shall see.

Disappointing finish.  Not ready to get into all of the post season stuff yet, but did watch Deboer's press conference and kind of hated it.   If there was ever a time for just BS coach speak it was then.  He was clearly beyond frustrated with his team's performance but you can't drive a wedge between your franchise goalie.  Pulling him, deserved or not, right move or not, was plenty without the additional comments.    Jake wasn't good enough this series but he was crucial in winning the first 2 series.  Also, a lot of the guys in the room he was bashing won't be there. The time for that kind of messaging is training camp with a new team IMO.

One thing I think is becoming clear is it really helps if you can finish off an early series in 4 or 5.  We just looked more tired across the board and Jake played more games than any other goalie in the playoffs to date and it showed on him.  I wonder if this team could have given Edmonton a better shot if we didn't get such a difficult first round opponent both years that took all 7.  Regardless, absolutely deserved to lose this series.

Lots to unpack for post-season but probably going to take a couple of weeks before I start reading all of that.

Also, not going back and reading all post game hot takes, but if someone actually said Fire Nil that is just about the dumbest fucking take I've seen in a Stars thread.  JFC.

Florida is in the finals, Dallas is scheduling tee times.

I don't disagree. Best not say too much in the heat of the moment. Even if you don't believe it, you say you pulled Otter because the team was not ready and you were trying to light a spark. Like it or not, Otter is this team's goalie going into next season. Let the players say stupid off-the-cuff stuff that can be walked back later. Coach is supposed to be the adult in the room. I like DeBoer a lot. Would love for him to finally get a championship and do it in Dallas. I trust Nill will continue to do smart things for this organization.

I'm tired of debating this point (not on this thread, in my stars text chain as it's been a non-stop discussion).  My personal view is we absolutely should have done something in the closing minutes of game 3 and dared them to suspend our guy and not Nurse but after that we were playing from behind and couldn't risk a 5 minute major or suspension retaliating. In hindsight given we lost anyways, maybe that was wrong, but at the time I thought it made sense.   But someone definitely should have done something at home down 3-0 in game 3.  That pissed me off.

That kind of thing happens all the time after the final whistle and there's not any action taken by the league. Nor should there be. It was actually relatively tame compared to some post-match brouhahas. Issue some pointless PIM if you feel necessary but that wasn't worth anybody getting disciplined over.

Last night, Mattias Jannmark scored after a 96ft up pass that came from the corner of EDM's D-zone to the opposite corner blue line. A single entry pass from that point sprung him in for a clean look. If you're going to win the Conference Finals series, you can't allow those things.

What I'm going to remember about this series is all the times the Oilers snapped precision passes through the O-zone that led to perfect one-timer shots. Contrast that to Dallas, who seemed to have to stop and dig every puck out of their skates, dust it off, then look up to see what was next. Edmonton just made the game move too fast and too precise to play like that.

Roope's injury was mostly an unfortunate occurrence. It was properly whistled for the slash, but usually slashes like that are just annoying. Nurse just happened to catch him on a nerve or bone or something. The injury was real, but really random. In the same way, I'm still not sure how Hyman even made contact with Mush to end up with season ending surgery. Something just got hung up in the way when two players passed each other.

That said, someone might likely take an extra whack at Mr. Nurse at some point next season.

I disagree on pretty much every point. You must retaliate. You can’t let Nurse and Bouchard get away with murder. We laid down. We got our asses kicked, we had very little to lose, and we had zero pride. It should’ve been Benn. He’s tough. Skillless, but tough. Do your fucking job as captain.

We don’t need more mass on the front lines. We don’t have enough speed and skill. The game has shifted away from mass guys in favor of speed. Doing what you suggest is taking the wrong step back in time.
