Florida isn’t letting Jaden Baugh leave. Sumrall singled him out in his opening press conference by name. Probably time to let that pipedream go.

For Coleman, it probably comes down to the ability to sell him on fixing the QB spot to make sure he has a good draft year. That veer and shoot offense Golesh is bringing is super WR friendly.

It's WR stat friendly, but I've read that NFL tends to devalue (relatively) WR that play in that offense because it stunts their development. In that offense, WR run go routes or comeback routes and that's about it. They don't run the full route tree, they don't read coverages, they don't hot route. So even though they put up stats, they don't develop WR skills.

Can you name the leading WR for Tennessee? Mississippi St? I can't.

Yes, likely just fantasy to think we could pull Toney to Austin. But despite being a lowly 3-star, he's a mega-talent who'd kill it in Sark's offense. So let's find a reasonable facsimile thereof.

Brenan Thompson for Miss St and Braylon Staley, I believe.

If Brennan Thompson is your leading receiver, that makes my point about WR development. That dude can run go routes and basically nothing else. Makes sense he is doing well in an offense that doesn't ask him to do anything else.

Oh I agree. I was just answering the question because I remember Thompson had more yards than Wingo and he plus their two RB's scored 19 TD's between the three of them. As for Staley, I remember him because I watched Tennessee take a beating from Vandy and they were talking about him. I remember thinking he should probably gtfo of Tennessee because Huepel is dog shit and this is his ceiling as a coach. If I'm a BMD, the checks stop immediately until they get serious about winning and hiring a coach.

Keep the powder dry for Baugh, Dallas Wilson, and Cam Coleman please.

Dallas Wilson has had two significant foot injuries in the last 6 months. For what he would cost the injury risk is too much, IMO.

I believe Sark only targets transfers from P4, right?

Probably not worth posting portal news about non P4 players.

We've taken some G5 kids under Sark, Trey Moore came from UTSA. We took players from Wyoming and San Jose State (Neyor and Jayvion Cole), although neither of them worked out. Took a LB from James Madison early in Sark's tenure, and our current backup QB came from Troy and our current kicker from Texas State.

Also trying to money whip Miami’s best offensive player might just be a tad bit expensive.

No doubt. Then again, Miami's current backup to Carson Beck is a "developmental" QB prospect. Maybe they get a big name to transfer in, but you'd think any young receiver now on the team might look around a bit. All wishcasting until further notice, of course.

Brazell is probably the leading WR at Tennessee and he's very good. He has speed that the NFL will covet and he's not a small guy. Not that you're point is otherwise off, but guys with the physical make-up and production will still get drafted from those offenses.

Yeah Brazell is the leading WR in the SEC. Brenen Thompson is 2

I like Livingston and Mosley. Wingo is just a good athlete that’s about it. I doubt sark ever benches him

I think if we go in the portal for a WR the young kids are leaving. Of course we don’t know if they are any good since sark refused to play them.

This is fucking hilarious. Wingo isn't perfect but he's also the best WR we have on campus by a large margin, and he's likely better than Coleman(fumbled against Bama late costing Auburn the game) and Williams (no catches, shit maybe no targets against Auburn).

The best WR in college football is Jeremiah Smith, but in two games against Texas 7 catches for 46 yards and 0 TDs. Wingo has 5 touches for 71 yards and 0 TDs.

Yes, and Thompson also ran a 100m of times of 10.18, 10.22 and 10.38.  He is fucking FAST.  Someone will take a chance on him for that alone.

this has likely already been discussed, but here is what i am hoping for on the offensive side of the ball from the portal this year:

2-3 B to B+ interior offensive lineman

1 A+ stud wide receiver

1 B to B+ running back

How likely is something along these lines?

How much money you got to throw in the kitty?

Posted

An issue with the A+ kitty is that it is far more expensive than the B+ kitty because it is highly sought after. On top of that, what happens when said player chooses to sit out with minor injuries?
Give me the talented, semi productive, undervalued guys who are out to prove something.

Coleman fumbling against bama doesn’t automatically make him worse than a guy who dropped easy passes all season

Some portal notes from IT

Spoiler

Though the season isn’t officially over and everyone at Texas is hoping the Hail Mary attempt to make the playoffs hits home, coaches have begun having “exit” talks with players. That should continue throughout this week and into next week.

The subject of who is leaving, whether to the NFL or to the portal, is a tad bit delicate, but we’ll be as discreet as possible. It’s important to keep in mind this is all fluid. Minds can change rather quickly. A couple of years ago IT knew a player was going to return before the player did… because we knew how badly Texas wanted to keep him. In the same vein, the coaches will be able to keep some younger players who might be frustrated about playing time if they truly want to.

Quarterback

Trey Owens will hit the portal. There has never been a decision so obvious, so we feel perfectly fine stating his name.

Running Back

There’s been a lot of concern about Texas clearing up funds and reshaping the room but those concerns shouldn’t exist. Texas will lose at least two running backs but perhaps more.

We do believe James Simon will return. Everybody else, we’ll have to see how things play out.

There will be money to get a good running back.

Wide Receiver

There will be turnover at receiver but maybe not quite as much as expected. We’ve been made aware of two developments in the last couple of days. One points toward a player staying; one points toward one leaving.

We don’t expect the entire Core Four to return intact — at least that isn’t the most likely outcome right now. It would be a mutual parting with no bad blood, just business.

If that player departs, Texas will definitely be in the market for a quality replacement.

We do expect most of the younger guys to remain.

IT feels like Aaron Butler is too talented not to play somewhere, but he’s been a bit too inconsistent at Texas.

Tight End

Through no fault of his own, Jack Endries might not have had the production he wanted this season. We think it’s more likely than not he’ll be back, but to our knowledge a final decision hasn’t been made. Another year with more production could help his NFL stock.

Nick Townsend obviously isn’t going anywhere.

They will likely lose a player who saw action this season.

There’s been chatter that Will Randle will look to find playing time elsewhere.

Offensive Line

IT expects both offensive tackles to return. Needing guards is a lot different than needing tackles. Assuming both tackles do return, that’s a good win.

There are too many players to discuss who might leave and we’re not ready to name them anyways. We heard a couple of names during the season but will keep those private because players change their mind all the time. We’ll see who the staff truly works hard to keep. That will tell us a lot.

Defensive Tackle

We lean towards Hero Kanu staying but we don’t know that for sure.

We can’t see Alex January leaving.

Justus Terry loves it in Austin but you can bet people will try and poach. He flashed a lot in his minimal time, especially against Georgia.

We’ve heard of nobody leaving but Lavon Johnson and Melvin Hills wouldn’t be a surprise simply due to playing time.

Edge

At this time, we do think Zina Umeozulu will be back.

Obviously Lance Jackson and Colin Simmons aren’t going anywhere.

IT took the time to ask about true freshman Smith Orogbo: “Talented but raw. If he has a good offseason he’s going to play.”

Linebacker

Barring a miracle pitch from the Texas staff, Anthony Hill is going to declare. We just don’t see him coming back.

Early signals point to Brad Spence taking on the Trey Moore ILB/Edge role. Bo Barnes has been doing well in workouts/practices.

Liona Lefau and Ty’Anthony Smith are expected back.

Defensive Back

I’m going to lump all the defensive backs together.

I don’t see any way Malik Muhammad will be back. He’s been a three-year player since high school.

If there’s hope for one potential NFL guy to return, it’s Jelani McDonald. Sources seem to indicate he’s at least open to returning. We know what needs to happen here.

IT has heard a number of names of players who are undecided on their future. Steve Sarkisian is going to need to have some productive conversations with the DBs.

We’ll be monitoring this position group closely due to the variability. That written, I wouldn’t worry about Kade Phillips and Graceson Littleton.

*****

There’s a new rumor we’ve been chasing about a potential starter leaving. We didn’t want to mention it in the position groups because then it would be obvious who it was. We’re not 100% sure it’s true. It’s plausible and makes sense in some ways, in other ways it makes no sense.

I think what he's also trying to say, and I could be wrong, but he also dropped at least 2 'gimmes' that night, on top of the fumble. The drops were all him, not the result of an errant throw.

Regardless, no one really knows how good he actually is because he's never had a good QB in his two seasons playing. Anyone willing to shell out $1m+ for an unproven WR is dumb af. His recruiting ranking was high, therefore he must be worth the money. It's illogical, but that's what fans do to justify why 'so and so' is actually really great.

For all we know he could have the same issues as Wingo and drops. It wasn't the first game I tuned in to watch him play and see him drop an easy pass. Could those few games I watched him in just be bad days for him? Possibly, but unlikely. He's more than likely in the same tier as Wingo, which is below Smith and Williams (his drop this year means nothing. He's shown what he can do). And if we're being honest, probably TJ Moore.

Agree. Right now Wingo is a superior ATH playing WR, but doesn't know how to play the position correctly, yet. IF the lights click on and he fully grasps what it takes to be an elite WR, then yeah, we're cooking. He's literally hit or miss right now. He'll drop the easiest passes, yet somehow fingertip a ball in the EZ for a TD.

This is flat out wrong. He's had some terrible moments, but he is at worst the 2nd best receiver on the team. Moore and Livingstone are fine players, but not difference makers. There's not another receiver on the team that could do what Wingo did in back to back weeks against MSU and Vandy.

Posted

I'm not too interested in running off a sophomore receiver who caught 50 balls for 770 yards unless he is asking for Cam Coleman money or something ridiculous.

Our OC didn't even properly utilize him until October.

This feels like some of the same commentary you heard about Worthy after his sophomore year (gadget guy, athlete trying to play receiver, inconsistent hands) and I'm glad we didn't run him off.
