This. Probably don’t need to worry about the twist rate. I have shot a few hundred of these through a youth single shot bolt action 22 and they are very quiet without using a suppressor. If you can’t find the Aguila’s, look for some CCI 22 lr 40grn hollow point subsonic. They are pretty quite out of the same 22.

I'm not sure how far you would have to drive to get the Aguilas, it looks like you can only buy them from a specialty retailer which, I imagine in California, those are few and far between. You can buy the CCIs and have them shipped to your front door. You might want to install a spiral staircase to keep him at bay until your ammo arrives.

The staircase won’t work.

Trust me on this.

Thanks for that, but I have no fucking clue what my "twist rate" is.  Would you expect an old bolt action to have the required twist rate?

Twist rate won't matter much if it is close range.

In case you need to come up with a strategy to lure it in...

Do you know your neighbors?  Are they cool?  If so, tell them the situation and that you are on a mission to merk this yote.  Even a normal .22lr isn't THAT loud.  Especially when dealing with a predation issue on small pets.

It's also more ethical.  Subs work, but only at close range.  Think <50yds.  Then you have to make a difficult head shot on a small, fast, twitchy animal.  Being that you have the subs, and the range is close, just aim for the head/neck, but if you have a body shot, take it.

Biggest thing is don't leave small animals unattended.  Highly unlikely anything happens when an adult is present.  Coyotes aren't ambush hunters like big cats and they are not endurance hunters like wolves.  They are scroungers.  Opportunistic hunters.  Cats are prime sources for them and they operate outdoors; often alone.  Puppy is different.  They are always accompanied.

Yep.  Aunt in rural Coleman county had a bevvy of barn cats.  More than a dozen.  Pack of yotes came through and wiped them out in a night.  She also has geese and Guinea's.  They are smart, opportunistic hunters.

Our hunters we lease to.  Less than 24hrs later.  Cousin used his tracking dogs and they obviously found it....stripped down to the bones.

One thing I am trying to get my son to take away from our trips is that it is perfectly ok to come home “empty handed”. On the worst of days you sit in the blind and watch sunrise/set and some wildlife mulling around.

Just got home from a weekend at the ranch with my youngest. No luck on any deer or piggies. But as I pulled into my house there were 3 gamewardens in my front yard. Someone poached a buck in our neighborhood with an arrow evidently. It was found in my front yard. That was some awkward shit unloading all my gear with the gamewarden investigating a poaching. They started asking questions but it was clear they didnt think I did it (or anyone at our house, we dont even own a bow). Wild end to the weekend.

No. Evidently there have been 10 deer poached in the area recently. News to me. Somebody is doing something about the 5000 backyard deer we have around here. Part of me is pissed they are wasting meat and part of me is happy they are thinning the herd. It is getting unsustainable here. We have probably 100 deer in our tiny ass hood. They are everywhere.

Bow hunt them or capture them in controlled settings and send them off to the processor to deposit at the local food shelter. Win-win.

Same.  I told him you can go half a dozen times and see nothing.  I also explained how good it was listening to the wildlife, had some woodies buzz the tower early (small tank about 75 yards away) which he had the most hilarious quizzical look on his face.  "What was that noise!!!"

That is what we do in our neighborhood. You get to hear the ol' Blue Hairs bitch about how inhumane the nets are. But it must be done for the health of the herd.

LOL, they can make a racket.  Sound like little jets coming in.

forgive me I've told this before, but it reminded me.  So we have a little sitting area on the back porch by the pool and I mounted a TV on the back wall.  Inevitably mourning doves built a nest on the wall bracket behind the TV.  Doing what doves do, you can hear them inside as there are a row of big windows so you see out to the yard, etc.

I take the nest down, they come back.  Repeat.  Son's on the couch and hears them coo'ing.

  • "damn owls are back Dad"
  • What?
  • The owls, on the back porch, I always hear them.  I'm like buddy......those are doves, not owls.  He's looks it up, then is like....."my bad"

I forget he didn't spend weeks every summer and over the Holidays at the ranch growing up like I did.  I got shipped off ala boarding school and got put to work, but also spent so much time outside I can damn near recognize by sight and sound most Texas birds/animals.  I still give him shit about that.

Scheduling hasn't worked out great for me here at the start of the season. Probably not gonna be able to make a return trip to the lease until day after Thanksgiving at the earliest, although that may not be the worst thing in the world seeing as it looks like it'll be unseasonably warm the next 6-7 days and then rainy after that.

2 weeks for peak hunting season for me. The ranch burned to the ground from a wildfire. Structures are good thankfully. Hunting is cooked. Fun times. At least in 5 years things will be looking up.

I dont get the aggy wildfire website. Several 100 acres lost to a fire and it isnt even posted. Heading out to survey the damage tomorrow. Neighbor thankfully has been calling/ sending updates. It's great having amazing neighbors. Still a kick in the nuts. This year can eat all the dicks.
