Pink Floyd

One of the nice things about our seats was the balcony ledge in front of us.  It had like these guardrail cables running through to keep midgets from jumping over I guess, but it also provided a spot for me to lay my phone down horizontally, hit record, dim the screen, and enjoy all while enjoying the show from my seat.   I let it run from US/THEM through Eclipse and just checked it this morning.  Here's what it caught for those so inclined...

Yeah, but that's just a variation of the Ricky Bobby "All due respect" ploy.  I know he's gonna do them and have ridden that storm out without much complaint, but last night was f'n dumb.  It just was.  There was no let up and there was really nothing new or insightful.  Like I said before, Roger just put all his bitches and moans in a brown paper bag, shook 'em up for each song, and dumped it out on the table as if it were something new.  Even when I agreed with him, I could barely hear the music over the "We all get it!" voice droning in my coconut.  In fact, that's what Waters was last night, the guy at the party who tells the joke everyone's heard who keeps retelling and explaining it saying, "Get it?  Get it?"

Fuck, he's Glen from Raising Arizona, except politically.

Bet he swings too.

That's just his mo. Honestly I tired of him decades ago. You couldn't pay me to go to one of his shows now. Yeah we get Roger, your dad, the war, poor Syd. Get some new fucking motifs man.

I will say, I truly enjoyed Roger's piano playing.  Really exquisite stuff.

Yes, that was unexpected.  I wish I could have understood more of the words to "The Bar", both parts, I thought overall the vocals were pretty muddled and weak, not just Roger's but the others as well, the band sounded great though, glad to see Jon Carin back with Roger again.  Imagine the stories he can tell playing with both Roger and Dave.  Sheep was probably the highlight for me, although I also really enjoyed the whole 2nd side of Dark Side, was not expecting that (tried to avoid setlist talk this time around...).  I thought for sure near the end when he said that he had to change guitars that he was going to do Mother, was not to be.  My son told me he had seen the setlist and didn't want to disappoint me so he didn't say anything.  It's OK, one of my favorites but I've seen Roger do it every previous time I've seen him.  Gotta admit (I'm a little bit confused...), I was a little misty-eyed at the end, Roger and I both ain't getting no younger, probably will be the last time I get to see him live.  Caught him on Pros and Cons and Radio KAOS here in Austin, and the The Wall in Dallas and here.  Lots of good memories.

Thanks for posting, guys. I really struggled deciding whether to do this show or Saucerful of Secrets on the 18th. I chose the latter and think I will enjoy it more. I saw Roger during the Pros and Cons tour so I think I'm up to date on his politics. Didn't need a booster. I would love for Gilmour to make another tour happen.

Seeing Saucer Full next week up near Dallas.  I'm infinitely more pumped about that show.

@UTCzech IIICarin was with the US & Them tour too.  It was weird seeing John with Gilmour in 2016 (MSG) and then turning right around and seeing him again with Mr. Politico.

And you're dead on again, the vocals were extremely weak from the entire band.  Couldn't understand a lot of it.

Sorry, yeah, I meant back in the band as far as me seeing him.  He just bounces back and forth, he's got Rick's keys down.  Can't make the ASOS show, y'all take lots of pics and video.

I've seen Pink Floyd once, and it was after the split -- maybe '87 or so at the Erwin Center -- honestly, I don't really recall missing Waters at all.  I think Gilmour covers Waters' vocals better than the other way around.

At any rate, it was a tremendous show.

The ironic/frustrating part of the whole thing is that for the most part the "politics" ascribed to Roger Waters are actually Gilmour's. Gilmour has a coherent world view and well reasoned stances, whether it's something you agree with or not. Waters ramblings are just the outward manifestation of being an emotionally inept narcissistic shithead.

He's very polarizing.  I have a friend who was a relatively well known singer-songwriter in Austin before moving to Minneapolis.  He's Jewish.  Last name is "Israel".  He is a huge music fan, loves Pink Floyd and absolutely loathes Roger Waters because of his anti-Semitic politics.  It's a common rant topic of his.  I think it's a defensible position.

Nope.  I agree with plenty of Roger’s views.  He’s much more annoying by an order of magnitude.

So tired.

That's thing though.  Roger Waters doesn't have "politics". Everything he thinks and says is through a lens of personal applicability. He likes to put the veneer of politics on it, fat cats are hurting the poor, yadda yadda yadda, but it's just a put on. The power dynamic he is really talking about is him everyone else.

Someone who does have politics though is David Gilmour. He actually does care deeply about the poor and downtrodden.  He is your stereotypical bleeding heart liberal from the past century, and a ton of what people ascribe to Waters is from him.

I am very firm in my belief that a band is made up of all the parties. The sum is always greater than the parts. The best stuff from Pink Floyd had contributions from all the members. And when Waters left, the remaining 3 members sounded a hell of a lot more like Pink Floyd than any Waters solo work, which is obviously because it was most of the band. The 4 of them together is definitely the most impressive group, but when broken out, Gilmour and the others were clearly better musicians. Once realize what Roger Waters is all about, reappraisal of the Floyd catalog will show that at the end of it, Roger Waters just isn't that fucking good.

Terrible vocalist, serviceable bassist, damn good piano player, elite lyricist.

I used to. Not so much anymore. I was as big of a Pink Floyd nerd as you can possibly be in high school, as I said my first band had Waters in it's name. But I realized long ago that all my favorite Floyd songs were group compositions, and I lean to Gilmour's parts in those. One of These Days is peak Floyd imo. I will give him Mother, that's a great song, but a lot of his stuff is average as fuck.

Rescue Rangering Roger F’n Waters is a great look.

No, trust me, no one’s laughing at you.

Really.

I’m betting that Roger’s views with which you agree are the recent ones where in his old age he’s become susceptible to Russian propaganda on social media.

It’s unfortunate that he’s taken that stance because that’s totally wrong. I can’t explain it. Nor can I justify it. It’s disappointing. I can only guess that he’s just an old guy who hasn’t managed the media storm. It doesn’t change his history.

And nothing will change the fact that if it weren’t for Roger Waters then most of us never would’ve heard of David Gilmour.

Anyway, that remaster of Animals is excellent. That record has some absolute jams on it.

It’s not as well-realized a concept album as DSOTM, WYWH or the Wall, but it’s probably their most daring album musically.  Gilmour in particular came loaded for bear on that album.  Dogs is probably what I would cite as his finest playing.

Yeah the solo on Dogs is probably my favorite thing he has ever done. I would say Animals is probably my favorite Floyd album on balance. Meddle and Wish You Were Here tied for second

You'd be betting wrong.  Very wrong.

But that's not really a surprise here, is it?

Have you ever heard Les Claypool’s cover of it? It’s awesome. He dove into the jam band genre with his Fearless Flying Frog Brigade. They were amazing. They also covered Shine On You Crazy Diamond and King Crimson’s Thela Hun Ginjeet. I saw them on a two-night stand at the Fillmore in San Francisco on 12/30-31/00 and they were up there with the best concerts I’ve ever seen. On New Year’s Eve they had Banyan opening for them and that was mind blowing. But they played Animals on the 30th and it was so cool because they jam on it like the Floyd doesn’t do. All hail the Frog. Here’s the setlist:

Set I:
Thela Hun Ginjeet
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
With a Little Help from My Friends
Riddles Are Abound Tonight
Calling Kyle
Hendershot
Recreating
Prelude to Fear

Set II:
Pigs on the Wing (Part One)
Dogs
Pigs (Three Different Ones)
Sheep
Pigs on the Wing (Part Two)

Encore:
Taxman

- Jerry Cantrell sits in on Taxman
- Tiny Tim tease before Hendershot
- Semi-Wondrous Boat Ride tease during Taxman

It’s not from that show, it was released earlier, but they put it out on a live album:

Hell yeah that’s awesome. I’m a big Claypool fan, got into Primus in high school and college and have seen them many times. I saw them on the Tribute to Kings tour last year where they played all of Farewell to Kings. I remember they did a cover of Have a Cigar back in the 90s. I’ve seen a couple iterations of Les’ other jam bands like Oysterhead, but I’ll check this out.

Back to Floyd

I did a 4-night run of Oysterhead in 2001. Two of them solo (W. Lafayette and E. Lansing,) bookended by shows where I met up with friends in Chicago and Cleveland. I also saw Frog Brigade live late night at the House of Blues in Vegas on 9/30/00. It was after the Phish show at the Thomas & Mack Center. We all knew Trey would show up. We didn’t suspect that Stewart Copeland would also show up for an Oysterhead reunion. (For those who are unfamiliar, Oysterhead was formed at Jazz Fest the year before in a “Superjam” with Claypool from Primus, Copeland from The Police, and Anastasio from Phish.) Frog Brigade also played Animals that night so I’ve seen them perform it live twice. I’ve also got a great story about how some security guard tried to kick me out of the show that night for smoking pot but I wouldn’t let him. I’ll save that for later.

I was also there for the debut “Superjam” at the first Bonnaroo where it was Colonel Claypool’s Bucket of Bernie Brains and was a purely improvisational jam fest. Hot, dusty, and mind blowing. That was the only time I’ve ever seen Buckethead live. That set was sick.

I’m only allowed to rep that once. I’m sorry.

Well then, let me tell you the rest of the story from 9/30/00. It’s a great story.

We were staying at Mandalay Bay and got to the House of Blues before the show started. We were sitting in the balcony and smoking a bowl, sharing it with strangers in the row behind us. It was my weed and my bowl and I happened to be holding it when the security guard entered the row and tried to kick me out. I’m not leaving this show. We all know Trey is going to show up. So I refused. He told me to empty my pockets. Nope, I’m not going to do that. Do you want me to call the cops? No. Then empty your pockets. Nope. I showed him my key card, told him I was a guest in the hotel, and that I wouldn’t be a problem. Meanwhile everyone around me acted like they didn’t know me. We went back and forth and I kept saying I’m not leaving and I’m not emptying my pockets and I’m not going to be a problem. He did drop a hint at one point when he said if he can’t smoke it then I can’t smoke it. I gathered that if I had emptied my pockets then the contents would’ve gone directly into his. Finally he gave up and walked away and left me alone. The guys in the row behind us were like, “Dude! What kind of Jedi mind trick did you use on that guy?” I simply said that there was no way I was leaving that show.

It was a great show. I’ve got a good bootleg recording of it. I’m going from memory here but there was a point early in the show where Les called attention to a bunch of people entering the theater. He said something to the effect of, “Folks, a lot of these people are coming from the Phish show. Many of them are high on LSD. Light man, you are in control.”  :D

Back to the security guard. There was a bar in the balcony level and I passed that security guard coming or going for drinks a few times as the show went on. The last time he smiled and gave me a pat on the shoulder.

Then after the show he was outside the venue as all these hippies spilled out into the casino. I took a nice nug and wrapped it in the cellophane wrapper from my pack of cigarettes. I circled back around and slipped it to him in a handshake. Then I ducked down a little bit and darted off through the crowd just to be safe.
