Its so strange how often we see this argument, about stadiums being built for football. I wish it was only for football, but alas our local stadium is still used by soccer, band, track and field, various community events like Relay for Life etc. It seems like a great talking point to say its built 'for football', but really falls apart when one actually gets involved in their local school district and sees all the events that use the stadium. You want to talk about single use, let's talk about baseball and softball stadiums. I really don't know of anything else using those.

I don’t think anyone is saying to not build high school football stadiums.  And yes they are definitely multi use.  The complaints start when you see a price tag for tens of millions with amenities on par with professional teams.   Does that make the team better or the students smarter?  There must be other, better uses for that money even up to the point of lower taxes.

I would have liked to have been there when the they made the decision. "I don't care what the idiots say. Cruz is worthless. Let'em bitch all they want. If they get out of line ban their asses."

Maybe that's just dreaming.

I went off of the comment was 'for football'. That's thrown around so often and its usually quite wrong.

Meh. Shit's expensive. A lot of people don't realize how expensive shit really is. Katy ISD built a $70 million dollar stadium.. they have 8 high schools and 77,000 kids. I'd say 2 stadiums and 8 high schools is a pretty good use of resources.

Amenities on part with profession teams, like what? You gotta back that one up with some data. Oh my gosh, they have a weight room!?!?!?!

Meh. That takes away a lot of local control. A district should still be able to provide more for its students if they want to. Ie.. if Lake Travis homeowners vote to tax themselves more than the base to do whatever they want, why shouldn't they be able to?

Why does one child deserve a better education than another? They all deserve an equal chance.

Of course the stadiums are multi-use, but the primary function is for football and they could be built with a lot more budgetary constraint. It was just an example of money that could be better spent.

Last reply from me on stadiums and school funding.  Yes Robin Hood laws take away local control, but as a Texan and Harris county resident, I’m ok if part of my taxes fund a school district in south Texas.  I don’t have to live in south Texas to justify that.  Or move to south Texas.  We are both covered by the same state jurisdiction.   And my opinion is just as valid as someone in Harris county that wants to keep the money in Harris county.

You presume too much.  Trumpkins hated ObamaCare but loved the Affordable Care Act.     They cannot be reasoned with.  They don't have any idea what those words mean.

You know sometimes when I want a laugh, I ask a Trumpkin to please explain to me the definition of one of the following concepts:  "liberal", "communism", "conservative", "collusion", "socialism".  Or where Venezuela is and why we don't want to turn into them.

But not too often.  Because the answer usually makes me more depressed than anything.  Also, try asking one of them who Soros is.  They don't know, except that he is someone who makes them very, very, very afraid.

You know sometimes when I want a laugh I ask a liberal how we're supposed to pay for a Medicare for all system. And then I ask how they can care about the environment and black lives matter but at the same time want unrestricted access to abortions which has killed untold millions of babies in the past five decades.

Could be cheaper for people than the system we have. To start with it would create a mechanism to control costs. They're not babies and that's a woman decision. Did I pass? How hard did you laugh? Fucking dumbass.

Austin residents carry a disproportionate percentage of Robin Hood funding.  I'd like to see a good argument for why that is, because so far I can't really figure it out.

I don't think it's unreasonable to pool funds generated at the state level (be they property tax, sales tax, income tax OH NO) to fund equal and adequate levels of education across the state.  Beyond that base level, local school districts should be allowed to tax beyond that amount for their own use as they see fit.

They should absolutely be able to provide more for their children in their own private lives. But this is public money. The adults have all made choices in their to get where they are in life and nothing should be equal, you get what you earn. But the kids have done nothing to earn their place in the world other than having the random luck to be born into either wealth or poverty. The adults in Lake Travis may deserve a big stadium but the kids there have done nothing more than the kids across town to deserve that.  A Lake Travis student deserves that big stadium no more than an LBJ student.

If it’s public money for education it should be spread equally.   The rich absolutely deserve every perk they have earned  in their private lives.  But not when it comes to education money. If you want those perks to extend into your child’s  education then send them to private school.

The same way we pay for a military for all, a highway system for all, a police force for all, a National Park system for all, an agency to monitor and protect the environment for all, and hundreds of other things we provide for all.

Sanders's version of Medicare for all would cost 32.5 T over 10 years. Our entire revenue base last year was 3.7 T. Are you ok with doubling the taxes you pay now to achieve Medicare for all?

I'm asking that not to sow discord, but that's what it would take. Everyone would have to pay twice what they're paying now to enact Medicare for all. When push came to shove, Vermont couldn't stomach that. California couldn't stomach that. They both voted against it in state elections. And their versions cost considerably less.

How much do we pay for the current system? You can't look at costs and not savings.

And Sanders has one idea. There are others like adding a public option to the ACA. We need to have the debate and republicans are impeding it.

Are you conveniently skipping over some relevant numbers also involved in that equation, or do you really think it’s that simple?

https://amp.businessinsider.com/bernie-sanders-medicare-for-all-plan-cost-save-money-2018-7

A new report from the libertarian Mercatus Center found that Sen. Bernie Sanders' "Medicare for All" plan would cost the federal government an additional $32.6 trillion over 10 years.

But the Mercatus report also found that the national health expenditure - the total amount spent on healthcare in the US by the federal government, states, businesses, and individuals - would come in below current projections under Sanders' plan.

So while the price tag for the federal government would increase, the total cost of healthcare would go down, and more than 30 million uninsured Americans would get access to healthcare, according to Mercatus' model.

Sometimes when I want a laugh I walk somebody like you through the math. And I say that as somebody who doesn’t think that’s the best option and believes abortion is the endpoint of a human tragedy.

Cast out the beam from thine eye, brother.

You aren’t asking to sow discord, which is why you dropped a culture war floater into a healthcare funding post. Get over yourself.

Add in the savings then. Families and individuals would save on insurance premiums. They'd save on deductibles. What other savings are there that aren't already calculated?

Wouldn't what you're paying for health insurance now would cover that? What are those numbers?

Not in our family.

I'd like to see a per person cost breakdown between the two. Bigger pools usually mean lower costs. It would cut down uninsured costs that hospitals have to eat, too. On the surface it looks like it would drive down healthcare costs.

Not trying to be contrary, I'm genuinely interested how it breaks down.

I am shocked that someone named "Karleen" thinks this way.

What gets me most is....the fucking pink pistol.

At 10 yrs old, my daughter spotted a Ruger 10/22 Compact at the gun shop. She shouldered it and said “this is my gun. Can I have one?” So of course, we started shopping for one for Christmas. I saw one online with a pink stock. I pointed it out and asked her if she’d prefer one like that. She glared at me and said “I don’t want a damned pink gun.”

Oh, and she’s a “flaming liberal” Beto supporter these days. And she shoots a 10/22 with a classic wood stock.

Fuck these ignorant fucks.

I would like to see the exams given in that class. And who gets a plaque for completing such a class? Waste of taxpayer money in many ways.

I'd never seen that part of the study, I did find this link interesting (below). If we can indeed recoup those savings I'm all for it.

https://jacobinmag.com/2018/07/medicare-for-all-mercatus-center-report

What blows me away is that in terms of total expense (private and public), we have the most inefficient healthcare system in the world. With mediocre outcomes, mind you. We are in a place where almost EVERY other conceivable option would be better.

Yet any meaningful analysis is attacked as COMMUNISM! Any meaningful alternative is COMMUNISM!

Healthcare is a winning issue for the Dems. They should stick with it. History will be on their side soon enough.

The fucking study you cited does exactly this and found a net savings. Jesus Fuxking Christ.

wait... so you are saying we would actually spend LESS on healthcare? interesting...

Y'all see the Astro fans on tv at all this past week (especially the first row in the outfield where they interfered with the HR)? That's Cruz's red meat, no wonder he's making 9 stops. A mixutre of a bunch of fat, middle-aged wypipo, some fat lower-class "blew my whole month's check on these seats" wypipo and a few fat/old oil & gas middle management types.

Like the mentally ill guy with the mustard pants says, "GO TO THE WOODLANDS, NOT MONTROSE!". Houston and it's hundreds of suburbs should be like ground zero for Cruz.

White people who say "wypipo" is one of those things I need to vent about on the things that make you surly thread.
