Cruz vs Beto

Only 5 new registrations at the event, which was less of an event than "hang out at this place where people sometimes come", but that's OK.  I asked one guy if he was registered and he said "you don't want to talk to me, Cruz fan." (he was not being a dick)  To which I shrugged and said "I'll still register you.".  But he was registered.  Got two yard signs to go deliver to two of the doors I knocked on who said they were supporters but need a yard sign.  Gay couple who own two homes and need a second one for this one, and an awesome woman in a wheelchair who was talking about how incredible it was to see Beto at the Texas Disability Issues Forum.
Also the funniest moment was knocking on the door of one unit of a duplex, a bit run down.  I'm standing there waiting the requisite 20 seconds for a sign of life and think "it stinks of Raid".  I look up to see if there's a dead wasp nest or something.  Holy shit, there are two dozen wasps clinging to the eave directly above my head.  Slowly backing away.
I recommend going out and doing one of these things, it was fun and I didn't really have any bad experiences.  If anyone needs a VDR for a thing, lemme know (but also you can post in any of the Beto facebook groups, or I can give you an e-mail to get in contact with a broader Travis county VDR list).

That feels like it was leaked to scare the Trump base into voting
But it could also be a signal to Cruz that the GOP has better races to bet their money on.  The GOP and PACs could sink tens of millions of dollars into supporting Cruz and still lose.

It’s gonna be an expensive TV ad buy to counter a massive ground game

Alright, let me parse this.

Tofu - I don’t eat the stuff because I find it tasteless and the texture is gross but it’s a healthy thing to eat. So, he dog whistles it because it translates to “hippy dippy librul food” to rednecks?

Silicon - how in the world is this a bad thing? Silicon Valley is shorthand for cutting edge success and wealth and technology. Yeah, that would just be a horrible thing to have in your city or state! Or does he mean breast implants?? TED CRUZ IS HOMO GAY! HE’S AGAINST BIG FAKE BOOBS!

Hair dye - WUT??? Texas women are like Alabama women - at a certain point, the hair dye becomes a sacrament. Or maybe all those whippersnappers with that pink hair are going to corrupt some kids???

Seriously, there are probably hundreds of dog whistles he could use to imply how terrible it would be for Texas to be California-ized.

Yet his weird ass chose tofu and silicon and hair dye????

Thanks for the chuckle, Ted.

You got some silicon we should know about/possibly see pictures of?

This VFW flag bullshit... what the hell?

i saw that on twitter the other day.  obviously it's bullshit, since Beto would not do that (want to have American flags removed because he doesn't like American flags) but that is exactly the kind of lie that would be told to attack him (HE HATES AMERICA OUR OPPONENTS ARE UNAMERICAN MERICA JUST LIKE THAT MOVIE WE'RE MAD ABOUT CURRENTLY THEY WANT TO TAKE OUR FLAGS AND FREEDOM)

Looked it up, and it appears that there is a guy at the VFW quoted on some far right websites saying that they wanted to take down the American flags.  Not sure if there's been an official update/acknowledgment from the Beto camp, but my fiance asked if I had heard about it and said she had read that Beto wanted to stand in a different place than where the flag was, and wanted to move the flag from where it was to where he was going to stand.

ah - article from the local paper

https://www.theeagle.com/news/local/o-rourke-campaign-we-never-asked-to-remove-flags-at/article_1ee6af45-28bd-5537-a759-6d366ebfe3de.html

looks like a flat denial, maybe what my fiance read was some 31 flavors stuff, here's a picture from the event

I saw all of that - it’s insane. And they buy this shit hook line and sinker. There are people in this state and country that are so fucking lost. It’s amazing. I have family like this and it’s socialism and communism and they hate America blah blah. I can’t begin to understand. You want to be a conservative on substantive issues, fine. But these folks have boogeymen everywhere its like McCarthyism but it’s more unbelievable and more juvenile.

This would be the optimal outcome.

The four largest markets, that contain a big chunk of the state’s population, are blue.

So where do you buy?  Do you spend millions on those markets, hoping to bring a few thousand more out for Cruz?

or do you blanket the small markets, trying to get apathetic Republicans off their asses?

It seems like Cruz’s voter numbers are capped, while Beto is the one with a lot of untapped voters that just need to show up.

Top Trump Adviser Says Ted Cruz Could Lose Texas Senate Race

A pair of top Republicans acknowledged in a private meeting on Saturday that the party was battling serious vulnerabilities in the midterm elections, including what one described as widespread "hate" for President Trump, and raised the prospect that Senator Ted Cruz of Texas could lose his bid for re-election because he is not seen as "likable" enough.

The two Republican leaders, Mick Mulvaney, the federal budget director, and Ronna McDaniel, the Republican National Committee chairwoman, assured party officials and donors at a closed-door event in New York City that the right would ultimately turn back a purported "blue wave" in November. Mr. Mulvaney also questioned whether Democrats could marshal support from outside the left, criticizing them as a party defined solely by opposition to Mr. Trump.

But Mr. Mulvaney and Ms. McDaniel also offered an unusually raw assessment of their own party's strengths and weaknesses in the midterm elections. They pointed to the burning energy among Democratic voters and the dozens of open House seats, where Republican incumbents decided not to seek re-election, as fearsome obstacles to retaining control of Congress. And Mr. Mulvaney suggested Republicans would fare better if they could "subtract" the president's divisive persona from voters' minds, and stress instead that the country is in a "pretty good" condition.

Road tripped Saturday from Cedar Park to Wichita Falls w/ some friends to go watch the Midwestern State - Western Florida game (more fun/less frustrating than Texas football, that's for sure). I was amazed at the Beto signs spotted along the way. Lampasas. Stephenville. Mineral Wells. Wichita Falls. We all remarked on it. Our friend who's a Midwestern State alum (and loudly "never Democrat") went from giving me shit (jokingly) for the Beto sign in my front yard when he picked me up to getting a little defensive when we pointed out the disparity in Beto v Cruz signs, including the Beto sign across the street from his childhood home in WF.

The only people I know who have met Cruz thought he was a nice guy and not as awkward as what he seems in some of his public appearances.

When specifically asked his opinions on Ted Cruz, Boehner made a face, drawing laughter from the crowd. “Lucifer in the flesh,” the former Speaker said. “I have Democrat friends and Republican friends. I get along with almost everyone, but I have never worked with a more miserable son of a bitch in my life.”

Just got home from a weekend in Llano county. Saw maybe a half dozen large Beto signs on ranch gates on 261 and 2243. But what may be even more impressive, I saw about 10 Beto yard signs in front of regular houses IN Llano. Including one house that had a few signs for local Republicans.

make that boy a hard core anti republican for life.

when i was a kid many moons ago the father of one of my best friends said he would never vote for a gopper his whole life, and i thought that sounded pretty weird.  by the end of watergate it didn't sound weird at all.

right now it sounds pretty level-headed.

Okay.   I guess y'all have had a different experience.  I haven't ever met him personally so I don't know.

I am curious Brisketexan, what was your interaction and what did he say?

Story I’ve told here before. Right after he was elected, was trying on new boots next to him. Made a crack or two about boots in DC, he didn’t even crack a grin or return engagement with me. I’ve been around a lotta political types - from all parties. They all will engage with a constituent good-naturedly. Ted was annoyed that a peon was daring to talk to him.

I have a couple of friends who were high enough up in W’s 2000 campaign that they ended up getting jobs in OMB and Commerce after W won. They worked with Cruz and said he was smarmy knowitall who they wouldn’t piss on if he was on fire.

When he started his tea party fueled senate run, I asked one of them if Cruz really believed all that shit he was saying. The response was that Cruz doesn’t believe in anything except furthering his own political career and will say or do anything to that end.

Incidentally, after working for the W administration, they voted for Obama twice and then Hillary.

Brisket was nervous.

"Will you boots take the length?...How much they cost?  Tree-fiddy?"

Lulz.  At this point Cruz should just start calling Trump "Mommy."

So all that “the Texas Lyceum poll is fake news, we are up double digits” is actually fake news itself. Their internals must be fucking awful. I’m taking tied or +1-3 territory.

Is the senate race straight popular vote across the state or county to county?

First time Ive given a fuck.

On election Day, all the Cruz supporters and all the Beto supporters compete in a battle royale for 10 minutes.  The candidate with the most supporters left alive wins.

I'm gonna guess the Cruz side is gonna have a lot more AR-15s than Beto's.  But also they will be mounted on Rascals or golf carts.   They don't move too fast.
