I got to choose one of the songs for my father's funeral.  It was a real tear jerker sitting next to my teen and younger sons.

Man.  My wife and I are empty-nesters, have been for a few years.  It's like a whole new marriage.  We connect, we love each other, we relish the moments we have together.  But those moments also come--necessarily--in the back half of our lives.  As we can see our mortality from here.  If We Were Vampires fucking shreds me.  Just gutted.  It's an amazing song, and I love it and hate it.

Here's one I haven't seen posted:

Love.  Loss.  Time, and that loss never goes away.

Lydie lit a cigarette today
Ancient fumbling fingers in her way
From a forty year old coffee cup she sipped a bit of gin
Closed her eyes and let the memories in

I come from "cigarette and forty year old coffee cup" people.  I can see, smell, and taste this song, and the grief.

The first time I saw Slaid he was doing a solo gig at the Waterloo Ice House on 38th & Medical Parkway.  He was new to town having come from Maine.  He was unspectacular, very raw, but there was something there.  Maybe a half dozen years later "Broke Down" came out and everyone exclaimed in unison "holy shit".  One of the best records ever to come out of Austin.

Another for the Lord Huron fans.  Never released on an album outside of a soundtrack and for some reason hard to even find a decent version on Youtube.

I missed the year they played it at Red Rocks.  I probably would have broken.

Heh.  A friend of mine used to room with Paula Cole at Berklee.  She was also a singer-songwriter.  She about lost her mind when Paula hit it big and she didn't.  (Never did.)

Two things...

I miss Charlie Robison.  Goddammit.

And second....I will never NOT be madly in love with Kelly Willis.  Man. She kills me.

I lost a good friend
Christmas time when folks go off the deep end
His woman took the kids and he took Klonopin
Enough to kill a man of twice his size

House I Can’t Sell

(Key of G — 4/4 slow strum feel)

Verse 1

G                          C
There’s a cracked screen door swinging in my mind
      G                         D
Sunlight fades on the hardwood time
        G                       C
Her perfume’s still in the hallway air
        G                     D           G
And the wind hums songs like she’s still there

Pre-Chorus

         Em              C
Tried painting over every wall
         G                         D
Hung new curtains, tore ‘em down in the fall

Chorus

          G                     C
She still lives here, in this house I can’t sell
          G                               D
Her laughter echoes like a church bell
          Em                 C
Got the sign in the yard, but it never gets a bid
          G                          D
Guess some ghosts won’t let go where they lived
          G                     C
Yeah, she still lives here, in this house I can’t sell

Verse 2

      G                         C
Her teacup waits on the window sill
      G                          D
Like she just stepped out and always will
        G                        C
The kitchen clock quit keeping time
         G                     D            G
The same day she quit being mine

Pre-Chorus

         Em               C
I patch the roof and mow the grass
         G                       D
But the past keeps coming through the cracks

Chorus

          G                     C
She still lives here, in this house I can’t sell
          G                              D
Her silhouette’s framed in every shell
           Em                    C
I’ve shown it around, but nobody stays
            G                               D
They all feel her heartbeat in the hallways
          G                     C
Yeah, she still lives here, in this house I can’t sell

Bridge

         Em                     C
Maybe someday I’ll burn it down
         G                        D
Plant wild roses on this ground
         Em                  C
But even then, I know too well
         G                    D
She’ll still be living in that house I can’t sell

Final Chorus / Outro

          G                     C
She still lives here, in this house I can’t sell
          G                             D
Her memory rings like a wedding bell
         Em                   C
No one wants to buy a place this blue
         G                               D
And I can’t seem to move on too
          G                     C
Yeah, she still lives here, in this house I can’t sell

       G          D           G
The lock won’t turn, and it never will
       G          D           G
She still lives here… in the house I can’t sell

Damn, those are some quality lyrics. That needs to be recorded.

These don't fit my perceived demographic here or the style of music, but I love JP Saxe's stuff. And I'm sure most everyone has a story that can relate to these songs.

This one reminds me of my dad's journey in my life. Still doesn't understand how to repair. The repeated line, "You can talk to God about that" is a twisted line for me.

1. It's basically the way the he says he has repented, which isn't enough to complete human to human repair

2. At this point in time, where I want the conversation to stay, because I can't allow myself to even want to get closer.

Maybe someone here who had an abusive parental figure(s) can relate to that:
