Wow $38M to get rid of Stoops who did about as good as should be expected at UK? Although I assume that and Kelly's can go down if they get another job ala Franklin. I bet Stoops will get picked up even if it's at G5 level.

BTW, what ever happened to Mike Stoops? Did he officially give up? Choke on a dick while gobbling them up? Feel like he completely disappeared.

Interesting, because the Mormons I was friends with in high school (late 80's/early 90's) only had 7-up and Sprite and other non-caffeinated drinks at any of their gatherings.

Oddly enough, I've seen many Mormons consume amounts of sugar that boggles my mind, yet none of them were ever fat.  By and large a very good looking group of people.

Agree

Would BYU hire a non-LDS to lead their football program?

Probably not. It's the flagship program. Seems to be an unwritten rule, but other BYU sports have had non-LDS head coaches, so not unheard of. Would take a unique individual to be non-LDS and make the cut for HC of the football program.

Perhaps an ex-QB who views the Honor Code as more of a guideline?

Not if he wants to getting freaky with the players' sisters and his wife is getting it on with the players or whatever else has been alleged.

BYU ain’t out of it by a longshot and having a literal prophet of the Almighty in the back pocket as a persuader carries significant heft so long as the coach believes it.

Liam doesn't know anything he isn't reading on the internet.

The church does not pay for athletics (and does not need to). BYU athletics are self-funded (and in the black always) and coaches salaries are mostly/completely paid for with donor money. However, the Board of Trustees for BYU includes top leaders of the church. Any major deals and offers -- like a Kalani raise and extension and same for his staff -- require their approval.

As anyone who tried to get season tickets for the AJ Dybantsa year for BYU hoops knows, there are a LOT of donors with big money behind BYU, most of it is behind the scenes. It's not just a few people like some schools.

I think the better question is whether a non-LDS person would take the job.  I don't think any such person should take the job.  It's impossible to understate the degree to which the LDS dominates culture, business, entertainment, everything in SLC/Provo, and it's turned up to 11 at BYU, and then that is turned up to 1,000,001 in the football program.  It would be really hard, if not impossible, for a non-LDS person to have the credibility he needed to corral NIL $ in Utah, develop the relationships with business leaders needed to sustain a program, and basically just to be respected.

And to several posters' points above, I know a lot of LDS plus-size folks.  Utah in general is healthier than some other parts of the country, largely due to its outdoor activities and the larger percentage of outdoor recreational athletes, but that's not an LDS thing.  They're just as much victims of our obscene American diet and lifestyle as the rest of us.

(I'm not LDS, btw.  Not even close.  But I do know a number of them).

Pretty sure BYU would hire a Scientologist.

I remember how "smart" everyone thought it was for them to get a Head Start on the coaching search...and they're last man standing. Damn.

Jeff Brohm is about the only name I have heard for Penn State that might turn out to be an upgrade over Franklin. And they’ve lost almost their entire recruiting class in the meantime. This is like a self-imposed death penalty.

If you’re an AD, it seems like one of the top priorities for your job would be to have a list of coaches you want to target ready to go at all times. Even more so if you feel your current guy’s seat is slightly warm. And then be ready to go asap. If you’re the one doing the firing, and picking your time, how are you not ready?

When Saban retired he made his decision on the 8th, told his AD on the 9th, told the players on the 10th. That night Byrne had his top 2 targets of DeBoer and Norvell. Interviewed both of them on the 11th, offered DeBoer the job on the 12th. He was announced on the 14th. 48 hours from Saban’s announcement to having his guy.

Granted that was Alabama, the offseason, and the same agent for Saban, DeBoer, and Norvell. And Saban had warned Byrne that it was coming in the next year or two.

But 50+ days? So what, you thought you had your first (2nd, 3rd) guy but his school matched and he backed out? And then you let all of the G5 coaches and OCs get snapped up while you wait for the Tongan to receive a sign from the ghost of Joseph Smith if he should stay in Utah?

There are probably too many cooks in the kitchen with no chef.
