If they are forbidden from killing directly but still want to eliminate the Earth's population, having everyone starve to death is a good workaround.

But not until after they use their new conscripted workforce to condition the planet to their liking.  Which could still easily happen without integrating the 12 holdouts, merely isolating them.  Especially now that informed consent is required to collect bodily materials necessary to integrate.

This is what I'm saying... they clearly aren't forbidden from killing, because they killed a billion people. That seems to be something ingrained in the fun RNA they sent us. So humans now (except for 12) are forbidden from picking apples, because that's how they've been programmed.

Not killing humans but instead infecting them with a virus that forces them to kill themselves slowly is some pretty silly moral gymnastics.  I'd like it more if it ends up being a tongue and cheek satire of our own behavior atop the food chain ("These chicken got to lead a great, free-range life until we murdered them.")

Something akin to our destruction as a species ending up as an asterik on a carton in  an alien grocery store or warehouse, saying something like: "these inter-planetary resources were harvested ethically and responsibly."

Random thoughts:

- I remain convinced Gilligan doesn’t want to do a big VFX show with hundreds of extras in alien makeup. I think there will be a build up for an invasion and they’ll converse with Carol, but little green men aren’t coming.

- Something stuck with me after the poker scene. The others clean up broken glass with their bare hands. No brooms or dust pans or hell gloves. This could demonstrate the aliens don’t give a shit if the others injure themselves in their service. They’re worker bees.

- Maybe the virus didn’t kill anyone because the aliens need worker bees? What if their biology prevents them from doing some tasks on Earth? What if they don’t like dirty jobs?

- Again everything is deliberate with Gilligan. He went out of his way in the previous episode to say they can gather and eat fallen fruit. There’s probably enough healthy orchids on Earth to keep a small number of humans alive.

Maybe this is something far simpler? Maybe the aliens just figured out how to end all wars, be civil and keep the peace and decided to share it? The end result is everyone being a hive mind and losing free will. And they shared it across the Universe?

The reason they are ultra nice to the 12, because they are doing this to keep the peace world wide. And they realized that with Carol in the state she is in, she needs to be isolated otherwise she risks the peace.

Eating/picking the fruit doesn’t kill the tree and apples falling off is natural. Don’t see why picking an apple violates their do no harm mantra

I have this thought that the aliens don't have the same appendages that we do (our hands are rather fragile for instance) and they don't eat the same way or what they eat from is harmed if they pluck food from it.

Except that it’s going to eradicate the species and presumably any other infected species in the universe. Not exactly magnanimous.
