Kid at the tailgate lot wouldn't take my cash.  And didn't even know what a paper check was.

So I guess it's time to step into the 20's.  I want ONE platform that everyone takes.  Venmo?  Apple Pay?  What?

Posted

Your choice may depend on the financial platform you use... & it may not.

I am with Randolph Brooks Federal Credit Union (RBFCU) & @ one time, could use either Venmo -or- Zelle... then something went wonky w/ Zelle & now it's Venmo only.

I get a maximum $ 500.⁰⁰ to send / spend due to RBFCU.  I have RECEIVED $ +7,500⁰⁰ on Venmo however when bothered functional, I could send $ 350⁰⁰ on any day & until Sunday @ 0000 hrs rolled around, I only had $ 150⁰⁰ left to send.

Send $ 200⁰⁰ on Wednesday?   Only $ 300⁰⁰ available until Sunday for the reset.

For me, Zelle was much preferred because it is / was 100% free & instant.  Receiving meant if someone sent me anything, it was IN MY ACCOUNT.

Venmo takes a % for an instant transfer.  Can you wait 2~3 days?  Ø fee for that

Also, with Venmo you Have to physically go into their application or website & initiate the transaction.  ¿Busy / distracted?  Don't forget to activate thr transfer or the $$ sits there waiting for your actions.

Zelle?  ★bang★ in your account. Again, $ 500 OUTBOUND per week is a built in headache with RBFCU.

YMMV.

I used to use PayPal but I can’t log into the shit for anything now. Haven’t set my Apple pay up tho.

Do they let you do the "instant pay" thing at the coffee shop?  That's my big want.

I use google pay all the time as it's just tied to my credit card. No bank involved. For bank phone payments and receipt of payments I find Venmo really easy and intuitive to use.

Just know that Venmo for some bizarre reason allows anyone to see your transactions if you don't set them to private.

You could take the step of just getting a credit or debit card? Those are pretty widely accepted. You can even store them on your phone and use tap to pay….

Just get a venmo account. By far the most used app and it's easy to use. But as someone else said, make your transactions private when you start.

Aren’t you special that you’re demanding that everyone use one app to make your life easier. I rarely see a store not accept a credit card. And if needed just enabled one of the credit cards on Apple Pay or whatever android uses. As for what app to pay a friend, ask what most people in your friend group use. In my experience Venmo works for the majority.

the nice part of enabling a card in Apple Pay is that if you leave your wallet behind, you can pay with your phone in many situations.

I was joking.  (But I have done it before.)

That's the Google Pay? (I'm Android.)

The more accounts you have, the more chances you have of being hacked.  (I've never had a paper check hacked/forged.)  Friends get cash or checks.  #deal with it.

I'll check out Google Pay.

Yes. Link a credit card to google pay and use that.  Or use the actual card if you wish, they’ll all have the chip now that does the same thing with rfid that the phone does.

Can’t even remember the last time I’ve written a paper check. Don’t even have any and on the rare occasion I need one I just go to the bank and get a cashier check

But Venmo and Apple/android pay are what you want

I do use Venmo.  In fact, I even got the Venmo debit card so I don't even deal with the transfer bullshit, but, I'm still the grumpy old guy that ALWAYS carries cash.  I've usually got 100 or more in my money clip in small bills, and I always have a crisp Benjie stashed in my cell phone case. That's just day-to-day.  If I'm travelling and will be tipping and doing minor purchases, I carry several hundred.

I'll use a card at a supermarket or gas station, but I'm not pulling out my Amex for a cup of coffee at a bodega.

My 13 year old commented the other day that she has never seen anyone write a check.

I use Google Pay and Venmo whenever I can. Zelle seems sketchy to me. Plug in a phone number and money is sent. I like the virtual card numbers with Google Pay so I'm not sharing my credit card info...in theory, but fuck if I know how it actually works.

Property tax is about the only checks I write these days.

remember when grandmas would write checks in the grocery store line. You didn’t know frustration until you she would wait until the groceries were rung up before even taking the check out of her purse.

I use a CC to pay tax, because I want the points.

My MIL still writes checks to mail utility payments at minimum. I hope she uses a debit card at the store but it’s no sure bet.

I use Venmo, CashApp, PayPal, Apple Pay, Venmo, and Zelle. No problems. When I had my own business, I’d have the business CashApp in my email signature so people could gratuitously pay me if they were so inclined. (It happened a few times a year.) People won’t standardize. That’s why I have so many.

Mine writes checks for every fucking thing.  She won't do any autopay because she's convinced that the water and power people are laying in wait to steal her account info.

"But Gil, the account info is right on the actual check"

Try to tell her that.

If they have a % fee, wouldn't that be at a minimum on a 1:1 with the points?

This has always stopped me from paying with a CC online in Harris county. Every time I’m compared the fee with the expected points, it isn’t worth it.

now if it’s to meet some promo spend level for other benefits to kick in, I can understand it.

A couple of years ago, a guy was writing a check for a carton of cigarettes. I nearly volunteered to pay for them to get him out of the damn way.

That's nice-- that's like over $75

I bought my son a truck and was going to put as much on my CC as I could for the airline points, but the fee made it not worth it. Sucks, I thought I was going to get a couple free round trips.

I pay for my grandsons preschool. Because it's an old baptist church run school in an older community, the options are electronic payment with a fee or write a check. So I write a check every month. I actually kind of like doing so, it feels quaint and anachronistic, as if I was typing this post on a typewriter.

Stay the hell away from Zelle if you value having Chase accounts. I'd stick with cashapp or venmo.

Can you explain this?  I have Chase and use Zelle no problem (mostly to pay tutors/lesson teachers for the kids).

Back when i had a R thumb, if the CC fee was even a tiny bit of a deterrent, I would take on the fee because I was compiling points on my Cabela's card to get a double barreled shoot-em gun.

Wife:  "Where did you get that new shotgun??"

Me:  "Cabela's... finally redeemed all those points I was saving up for after such a long time."

I wouldn't spend against the card unless I could instantly pay it off.

Now?  I can't easily hoist & swing my Remington 12 ga. automaticular.

I was ready to burn down my closest Chase branch last week.  Sent a $395 payment via Zelle on the Chase website.  Start getting calls from a random number - not the number I already have saved for Chase, because I have unknown callers silenced.  They leave a message that it's Chase Fraud, so I call back.  Ostensibly, they want to verify that I am making the payment on purpose, I wasn't scammed, etc.  They couldn't have been a bigger pain in the ass.  Asking me what the payment was for, so I tell them "fraternity alumni dues" which is exactly what is written in the notation of the transaction.  What's that?  What's that for?  Motherfucker - it's clear that I sent it, and I don't need to bulletpoint what my fucking dues are.  Denied.  Try again later.  Mind you - my whole account is also frozen now, not just the Zelle payment, which is not frozen, but cancelled altogether.  Call back to try again.  1st security question asks what state my SSN card was issued - I'm an army brat and got my SSN at like 6 months...none of the provided state options are anywhere I lived.  3rd security question asks what color my 2014 Toyota 4Runner was - I have had 2 2014 Toyota 4Runners, in different colors.  She tells me to pick one - wrong, apparently, so denied again.  Was coming out of my fucking skin.  Finally crack the code on the next call (different security questions), get the payment sent through, and immediately text the guy I was sending it to to cuss him out for making us use Zelle.  Couple hours later I see him in the comments telling guys they can just Venmo him.  *this close* to murder.

There isn't one.  Set up a PayPal, Venmo and Apple Pay account and you should be pretty well covered.  I use PayPal to buy shit online so I don't have to enter my CC card as much, or fill out the addresses.  Venmo for dealing w/ people.  Apple for Tap To Pay.

Maybe someday you’ll be a grown ass man, and will be able to tip people appropriately, etc.  Until then, pull out your card every time you need to buy something for 75 cents
