Or should we have just opted out of the amazing bowl game a few years against Georgia since they didn’t want to be there. No one told Bevo it was just a meaningless bowl game. It was one of the best and most memorable games of the last decade for Texas. I just don’t understand what people are saying or talking about here. The committee told us the previous Sunday we had no chance in the CFP and reconfirmed it yesterday. It was over last week. People need to get over it being a shock and move the fuck on. We have real holes we need to plug before we raid the portal. We have to play against a decent enough team to evaluate where we are in order to plug the right damn holes.

Georgia also didn’t play like they didn’t want to be there. They just got their asses whipped.

If a player is afraid of injury they shouldn't play another game ever.  Airplanes crash sometimes, so don't get on the flight.  Better be careful what you're eating you might choke.  Not playing as a player is really not different than Notre Dame not being in a conference.  Simply selfish.   There is ton of guys playing who will not go pro and they still suit up.

Well, looks like I'll be driving this year and the years going forward. I hate airplanes. I have aerophobia/aviophobia, so i only fly if absolutely necessary. Like, your ass better be trapped under a big rig and dying. I really don't get how people just get on airplanes and go to sleep. I think if I want to die in a plane crash I should probably take some LSD or MDMA. And xanax. All I can think about is if that pilot is having a really shitty day and hasn't been taking his meds for a month, he just caught his girl cheating with a friend, or he's been dealing with some shit internally like that pilot from Malaysia airlines 370. He just said "Fuck it. Every mf'er on here dying today."

Pass.

I don't know, I like both. The euphoric feeling is quite bad ass. The LSD, nah, that was hyperbole. I don't want my last minutes seeing flashing lights and hearing screaming. It's a lose-lose for me, regardless. No amount of drugs would do anything. I actually make the experience worse by looking that shit up and hearing about them on podcasts. I am glutton for punishment. It's like when I watch shark attack videos before heading to the beach. I don't know why I do it. It's like I want to feel the fear and adrenaline or some shit. Or maybe that's just my sociopathic side telling me we do still have emotions.

I think the value of having your school attend a meaningless bowl game is slipping below the drawbacks.

More and more marquee teams will opt out.

More and more recognizable players will opt out.

The college playoffs will continue to expand.

Since the bowls have passed their relevancy, they will die, just as the runner-up game for the NFL championship game died in the late sixties.

The players opting out started when? I remember one player opting out and it was kind of a big deal at the time, and then slowly it began happening more and more.

As for the bowl games— they're not really good or bad, they're just more games to keep us entertained because we will be crying and whining to watch William & Mary take on Mount Union on Tues the 27th or whatever. I take full advantage of the games, and I'm also happy we don't suck at baseball anymore. And softball. After March Madness, NBA playoffs/finals (if you're into that), all we have left is baseball and softball, then a dry spell for about a month. But let's be real- we're all here because football reigns supreme. Plus recruiting kicks up a notch.

Let's cut into that deficit.

I get the disappointment of the CFP bullshit, but that’s done. Anyone who’s not going to have fun watching us beat Michigan on NYE needs to come around.

The only way to incorporate the bowls is thru the playoffs. And play in to the playoffs. We would all be excited as fuck to play in the Cheez It play in  bowl vs Michigan to make the playoffs, ya know? I mean what the Reliaquest bowl PLAY IN bowl between Iowa and Vandy is way cooler. Or Duke playing into  the playoffs whoever the fuck Mayo Bowl play in. You can still have the corporate shit. But of the remaining bowls the best two are Cheez It and Pop Tarts. Still those would go to the highest seeded play in teams I guess? I see your point but the bowl names have to be tied into the fucking playoffs somehow.

The new transfer portal window is only from Jan 2-16. There is no more spring window and it’s the only time undergrads can enter the portal. We should be using our time and resources to secure the best talent in the portal instead of channeling our resources into a bowl game with no championship implications. If a transfer has to be swayed by the outcome of the Cheez-It bowl, we aren’t as solid as we think.

Other teams do both and have for years I think we’ll manage.

As long as there are school payouts and conference-shared payouts, this will definitely not happen. Notre Dame is trying to make a point and doesn't have a conference to come down on them. KSU's head coach is coaching another team through the playoffs.

This has been a thing since, what, Christian McCaffrey? Players going to the draft will continue to opt out, but this isn't going to matter until a fully healthy, non transfer portal, returning starter is held out of a bowl game. It's not going to happen because players can only get so much better in practice. Players get exponentially better with in game reps.

Yeah blow out a ACL or Achilles for a game that doesn’t matter and miss all next season. Smart choice.

You know what, I agree with you!! In fact, any returning starter should just sit out the bowl practices too! Way too much risk. Don't these coaches know that Baxter got hurt during a practice??! A practice??! Nope, too much risk, don't let the starters practice either. They should just play EA CFB on PS5 against Michigan to try and simulate live reps. It's the only smart business decision.

I remember Mount Union was a powerhouse in the 90s/early aughts. I only caught a couple of games, but they were pretty fun to watch. I used to get them confused with Fork Union Military Academy for whatever reason. I don't even know why Mount Union popped into my head. I hadn't heard about them in a long ass time.

I should specified non-playoff related bowl games. The market is over saturated w them and the ratings for so many of them are not good.

Ah yes, let’s reach back 20+ years to an era that no longer exist to try and prove a point

Era no longer exists? Yesterday, doesn’t exist either and neither does tomorrow.

VY should have skipped the 2005 Rose Bowl then. It was a game where he could have been injured. He might have dropped in draft but he might have landed at a better spot and had a longer career with a real coach and more money. And what is a trophy anyway, I can buy those at the store.
