What are the most depressing songs you like?

On the banks of the river where the willows hang down
And the wild birds all warble with a low moaning sound
Down in the hollow where the waters run cold
It was there I first listened to the lies that you told

Now I lie on my bed and I see your sweet face
The past I remember time cannot erase
The letter you wrote me it was written in shame
And I know that your conscience still echo’s my name

Now the nights are so long, Lord sorrow runs deep
And nothing is worse than a night without sleep
I’ll walk out alone and look at the sky
Too empty to sing, too lonesome to cry

If the ladies were blackbirds and the ladies were thrushes
I’d lie there for hours in the chilly cold marshes
If the ladies were squirrel’s with high bushy tails
I’d fill up my shotgun with rock salt and nails

Hey Charley I'm pregnant
Living on 9th Street
Right above a dirty bookstore
Off Euclid Avenue
I stopped taking dope
And I quit drinking whiskey
And my old man plays the trombone
And works out at the track
He says that he loves me
Even though its not his baby
He says that he'll raise him up
Like he would his own son
He gave me a ring
That was worn by his mother
And he takes me out dancin'
Every Saturday night
Hey Charley I think about you
Every time I pass a fillin' station
On account of all the grease
You used to wear in your hair
I still have that record
Of Little Anthony and The Imperials
But someone stole my record player
How do ya like that?
Hey Charley I almost went crazy
After Mario got busted
I went back to Omaha
To live with my folks
Everyone I used to know
Was either dead or in prison
So I came back to Minneapolis
This time I think I'm gonna stay
Hey Charley I think I'm happy
For the first time since my accident
I wish I had all the money
That we used to spend on dope
I'd buy me a used car lot
And I wouldn't sell any of 'em
I'd just drive a different car every day
Dependin' on how I feel
Hey Charley, for chrissakes
Do you want to know the truth of it?
I don't have a husband
He don't play the trombone
I need to borrow money
To pay this lawyer
And Charley, hey
I'll be eligible for parole
Come Valentine's Day

Been drinking whiskey. Thinking about my mom. Thinking about all the things not said or done. Letting the tears roll when they feel like it. Maybe not when I feel like it.

It started with a song on the way home from work. Not ready to share it now. Heard “He called for you in the end” as it wound down. I was there at the end. I couldn’t help her. Don’t know how to get right with that.

The songs here aren’t helping. But they’re not hurting, either.

My god, ugh.

Man sitting by him is just extra depressing. I had to look it up to remember if he pulled the hammer down literally or just slowly over the years with a bottle. He took the hard way.

Man this song - I watched Inside Llewyn Davis one night while hanging out with the little bitty newborn infant baby.

It became one I would sing to her when giving baths and stuff - she loves vocals like this.

I finally put it together. This is a pregnant slave whose man got sold down the river just before she throws herself in.

London Grammar.... so talented, but the music can evoke strong depressive emotions. Singer has the voice (and face) of an angel.

This one resonates with me personally:  edit: damnit, the incredibly evocative video can't be seen anymore for some weird reason. Fucking brilliant song ... here's a live version that seems to take the I-talians aback

Great answer.

There was a poignancy to that movie that really hit me hard.  I re-watched it a few months ago, and it still felt really powerful in a way that's hard to articulate.  Sometimes he tries to do the right thing and he's punished for it (the cat, getting a license to take a job on a ship).  And sometimes he's just too broken to do what he knows is morally right (take the exit to Akron, where he knows there's an ex-girlfriend raising his child).

The Coen Bros have several movies that are so great at that... poignancy is a good word, powerful too. I usually am not trying to analyze a film very hard when I watch it the first time at least. Both Llewyn Davis and A Serious Man are movies that (similar but way different than Lebowski) if you tried to describe the plot it would sound like a big mess of who cares. But if you watch it, you find yourself thinking about it over and over again, and it's the experience of the character and how all of those things feed it. I've seen that movies twice now and I feel like i'll probably watch it another 10 times and it will slowly become a favorite.  Maybe my favorite in that series of "can't catch a break" is he doesn't have his union card or whatever it is and the song he's working on is dogshit (written by his friend who is a hack sung by the yokel army guy) and he needs the money so he takes the session fee rather than the writing credit for what's going to be a hit, which is egregious insult to injury. Chef's kiss.
