The Beto Effect - How To Lose Elections and Influence Nothing

Beto needs to hit Abbott with 1-2 issues

  • Texas schoolchildren are dying and Abbott won't even attempt to deal with mental health. Texas #50 in the country in mental health care spending.
  • Electrical grid problem & deaths from the freeze of 2021 and that electricity rates are at an all time high and it's Abbott's fault for not encouraging more power generation.  Abbott is taking money out of your pockets every day and giving it to greedy corporations.

Make Abbott own every problem in Texas.

Beto needs to stay away from discussion about gun control. In reality even if he wins, he would have zero chance of passing any meaningful  gun control laws. Say that why he (Beto) disagrees with the lack of control, he respects the 2nd amendment and the will of Texans.

I'd also push that Abbott has either been Attorney General or Governor of Texas for the last 20 years, and if he hasn't solved all of the problems he complains about in 20 years, he's either not interested in solving them, or is too incompetent to solve them.

Just fucking hammer home that Abbott has been in one of the top two out of three spots in Texas for 20 years (and he was a Texas Supreme Court Justice back in the 90s).

I've taken to asking Republicans I know why Abbott hasn't been able to solve all of these problems as AG or Governor in the past 20 years, and none of them can answer.

Exactly. Any problem in Texas should be placed on Abbott. And if he wants to complain that high gas/electricity prices are Biden's and Dems fault, turn his own words on him that he's a failure in governing against DC.

His ads are great but it just doesn’t fucking matter. Fucking aggys have taken over half the country. Talking to a republican about politics is exactly like talking to aggy about sports. Facts don’t matter. They believe exactly what they’re told and there’s no changing their minds. Ever. I’ve tried with a handful and there’s just no fucking hope.

The game isn't about changing the minds of the bases. The game is to suppress turnout and contributions of the Rs and motivate turnout and contributions of the Ds with the rare occasional flip.

Say what you want about Beto and hell, the odds are stacked that he will not win. It ain't going to be for lack of trying.

Allllll those Texas town he is hitting -- including a lot of small ones. How often are spots like that even thought about by Greg Abbott? He's been the Uvalde more than Abbott. Today alone he is hitting Longview, Palestine, and Lufkin. Tomorrow it's Hemphill, Woodville, and Beaumont. Something like 75 cities in total.

I think that makes a big difference when someone says they are an Abbott supporter, then you see that O'Rourke actually came to your small town and talked to people while Abbott isn't doing anything.

It actually didn’t make any difference at all in 2018. Rural Texas was as red as ever. It was the triangle that almost pushed Cruz out.

A second trip for the 2022 campaign is to help lessen the margin from 2018. Beto no longer has to work hard for name recognition while also capitalizing on a weaker Abbott within the hard right. He doesn’t have to win the hard right voter, but can have them stay at home instead of pushing the button, pulling the level or dialing the clock thingy for Abbott.

I was on a United Methodist Men’s voter strategy zoom yesterday morning, and one of the invited guests was a dynamic young preacher who organizes voter groups in churches throughout rural East Texas. He was just about to introduce Beto to a group of East Texans at the Hemphill Senior Citizen’s Center, when he joined the call and informed us that a throng of Trumpkins had gathered across the street with signs and flags declaring Hemphill to be “Trump Country.” Then his voice filled with anger, agitation and apprehension as he described how a group had begun to enter the center with all manner of guns on display, ranging from hand guns in holsters to ARs. They were there for no other reason than to intimidate those there to hear Beto. He sent my pastor a pic who forwarded it to me. The “preacher” in the above video was one of those in attendance.

Before leaving the call, the young preacher remarked that the presence of the Trumpkins underscored just how important the gubernatorial was to them.

my sister said there was one guy with an AR15 that showed up in Palestine. he was promptly escorted out and invited to return unarmed. she got really emotional as she was telling me... she said it was a 'monstrous' looking gun and she just immediately flashed to Uvalde and that gun being used on 'those babies' and kind of lost it.

nothing but insecure, petulant assholes.

That guy looks chock full of fresh ideas to spearhead America into the future that he'll be around for to take responsibility in the unlikely event his ideas don't work out.

You could slip up on that idiot and shoot him with his own pistol before he could ever get that AR up to defend himself. Fucking moron.

it might be interesting. I just wouldn’t want to call some idiot whose a trumper and have him get in his truck then try to find me so he could shoot me.

At least in 2018, the campaign was using public records showing voting history in democratic primaries and donations to democratic candidates to identify potential democratic voters for contact. The MO when someone indicated they were solidly Republican was to politely end the call.

Fuck all of these people.  Every last one.

They really aren’t worth saving.  I know people like him are cowards, because if that “preacher” truly believed that Beto and his listeners were killing babies, he would have opened fire.

And all of these idiots who show up armed like this guy, all have serious issues in their lives - marital, mental, relationships with family members/kids, etc.  Something in their lives has left them feeling hopeless/helpless/adrift and so they gotta show up armed to make themselves feel like they are in control of their lives or whatever.

Anecdotal, but I know people like this guy, both family members and acquaintances.  They have serious shit going on their lives, and going around open carrying somehow makes them feel like they are doing something or are in control of things.

Agree here.  Ann Richards ran and won on 2 issues the first time, installing a lottery and insurance reform, which benefitted all Texans who owned a house or car.  Most of the down ballot candidates have latched on to a few key issues, like Collier and Fix the Damn Grid.

The Beto camp is pretty sophisticated in how they set up both phone banks and block walks.  Like gmr said, you have a pretty good idea who is going to answer and their leanings.  They've also branched out into adding teams that specialize in persuasion work for fence sitters, as well as teams that reach out to the traditional non-voters.     Plus they have a pretty extensive postcard writing campaign in full swing.    They do really good training as well.  They don't just hand you a lot of literature and point out a neighborhood, or hand you a list of numbers.   But they do have their own way of doing things and expect you to follow them and show up.

Beto is wasting time in these small town. You hit the whole food counties, and their surrounding counties, and the RGV

I'm not sure I agree. For a statewide race, an added vote in Lufkin counts just as much as an added vote in Houston. Moderates and democrats in the solidly red counties aren't used to being cared about at all, and I think having a chance to shake the man's hand can move the needle for a lot of these folks. Especially for a mid-term election, he needs people not to stay home.

And not just randomly.  Every day.  All day.  That is the ONLY way we win this.  CALL THESE MOTHERFUCKERS TO THEIR FACES WHAT THEY ARE.  As I sit here on an internet message board, I know that rings hollow.  I'll try and follow my own advice.  Luckily, I live in Austin, so I don't see the opportunity that often and I am not very good at constraining my emotions, so it's probably for the best.

But I will do my best to call out these awful people if I am in their presence and try not to get arrested.
