Actually a big deal because shadow fleets are typically uninsured and not owned by the government. So, moving Russian oil becomes a big risk for companies to take.

It's actually not easy to find and hit ships in the Black Sea that have their transponders off unless you have good intel (from NATO?) although the one hit by a mine could have been friendly fire.

More info, apparently pretty fucking far from Russia/Crimea. Ukraine ain't playing around and maybe hunting them as soon as they enter the Black Sea, which I guess means they do have help from NATO/Turkey. When they said "mine" it's possible they meant explosives attached to the ship. These tankers were headed to Russia.

------

A second oil tanker has gone up in flames in the Black Sea. Both ships have been identified as the M/T Kairos and M/T Virat. The destination of both oilers is the Russian port of Novorossiysk.

Shortly after crossing the Bosporus north of Istanbul they were struck by USVs. Both ship are totally engulfed in fires and abandoned by the crews. It is only a question of time until they sink.

It appears that Ukraine has declared open season for Russian shadow fleet oilers.

I don’t think they need to take out 50 of them, just take out a couple and the owners of the other uninsured tankers will decide that whatever Russia is paying them is not worth the loss of their ship.

I really hope you're correct. I certainly don't take issue with Ukraine making moves to help them stay alive, but I sure hate all this destruction to the environment.

Stupid question, is there a way to track and penalize the companies that are supplying Russia with these black market shipments?

These were on their way to Russia so they weren’t full tankers.  Unless it was refined products but I doubt they’d be shipping that way.

I get it but but my question stands, empty oil tankers headed there for obvious reasons. Perhaps tracking them is too difficult, I was just curious if there was a more ecological friendly option that could be explored.

Yeah. Putin could fucking end it. You think this is bad for the environment? Two ships in the black sea? hell I bet Russian offshore rigs leak  more than that. And maybe Ukraine by hitting them heading in was in consideration for the environment. Plus, these two  won't sail again, so win  win?

Now consider all the spent explosives across farmlands and cities. Add the unexploded shit and landmines. That was caused by Putin.

Wiki article on it.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has led to ongoing widespread and possibly serious and long-term environmental damage. The Ukrainian government, journalists and international observers describe the damage as ecocide.

Explosions inflict toxic damage along with physical destruction. Every explosion releases particles of toxic substances such as lead, mercury and depleted uranium into the environment. When ingested, explosives like TNT, DNT, and RDX, cause illness.[not verified in body]

Fights in heavily industrialised areas may lead to technological disasters, such as spills of tailings and fuel, that poison vast territories not only in Ukraine, but also in Europe and Russia. Destroyed buildings may release carcinogenic dust that remains hazardous for decades.[not verified in body] Heavy metals and chemicals may penetrate underground waters and poison water sources, killing life in rivers and water bodies.

Jesus dude, I was just asking if there was any possible alternative and acknowledged my ignorance when asking. I even said I understood why Ukraine was doing it and that I didn't judge them for the action. Forgive my curiosity, I'll ask no more questions.

I am just responding. it is a good question, but really don't think there is much consideration on either side for saving species or the environment.

1- Russia never has.

2- Ukraine has to survive.

Long term impacts are going to massive.

I wasn't asking if Ukraine could track and punish the companies. I sure as shit wasn't asking if Russia would nark on themselves.

I was asking if the outside world, ya know, like NATO could track the freighters going in and butt fuck the companies that were helping Russia with funding efforts via black market oil shipments. A NOPE and why would have been fine. I don't know the world of naval ship tracking and acknowledge as much.

OK, I track this shit. So sorry for the response.

Yes, IF they know they are at sea. Now who owns them? Who is selling and buying are the tricky parts. Once a ship turns off its transponder, and they are not supposed to do that, they  go dark. So only way to track is visual or if they communicate and NATO is listening. The shadow fleet is large and not only used/operated Russians.

Finances can be tracked, but that is like finding a needle in the haystack. Have to know where to start looking. So buyers/sellers just create new entities they use for a few specific deals. A lot of these groups cut their deals in Dubai.

One thing that happens, and there is a lot of evidence, is at sea transfer. So Ship A (under sanctions) runs out of Russia/Iran/Venezuela. The oil is already paid for.

Once at sea they meet up with Ship B (not sanctioned), they transfer, and Ship B takes it to port.

The hardest part of all this for the sanction busters are the  Ships. It is a pain to reregister every few trips, so they press their luck. It would be interesting to know the last port of call for these two ships. maybe not blow them up? Find the trends and follow the leads.

Hope this is better than a NOPE. :)

Ships in question. There’s video and it was done in broad daylight

————

SBU's Sea Baby maritime drones struck two sanctioned tankers of the Russian shadow fleet, KAIRO and VIRAT, in the Black Sea.

This was a joint operation of the SBU's 13th Main Directorate of Military Counterintelligence with the Ukrainian Navy.

During the attack, the sanctioned vessels were traveling empty—they were heading to load cargo in the port of Novorossiysk.

You donated to these drones back in the day
