The amount of new armor kill videos from today is mind boggling. If UKR was averaging erasing a BTG a day dropping obsolete RU tank grenades from COTS drone what the hell did they do today with precision NATO artillery?

I don't know about a full BTG, but they are erasing one or more mech infantry companies a day just in dead Russians and confirmed hardware, which would make a BTG in a couple of days.

As for the fancy artillery, most likely to cut Russian supply lines in the northeast/east, and to pressure areas along the coast/Crimea.  One of the maps showed that Russian rail lines would be within range of that artillery if they did push up to the Russian border.

Could you imagine if they got that artillery down to the Kherson area?  They could really fuck with a lot of Russian stuff then.  Crimea is within range.

Another from today.

Looks like maybe a direct artillery hit into a Russian piece with instantaneous massive secondary explosion.

Agreed, the amount of footage today of Ukrainians carving up RU with artillery is much much higher than a few days ago, and with much higher precision/accuracy. Seems like the NATO artillery got into theatre with trained troops and is just wrecking the orcs.

Do you have a good way on how they’ll get back?  Do you think the world will rattle the Russians cage to get them back?  And when they can’t “be found” will Russia let people in to find them?  Cause I don’t…

Help me understand kidnapping 1.2MM people and counting...what's the end goal there?

Russia is facing a population collapse.  They didn't have enough babies in the 1990s, and they haven't been having enough over the past few years (because they didn't have enough in the 1990s).  This causes a problem with maintaining a large military built around conscription (eligible manpower pool is small) and this causes a problem with your economy when the number of consumers and taxpayers keeps dropping every year, rather than increasing.

They seem to be kidnapping people from Russian-speaking areas, which means they can (in theory) convince a lot of those people to stick around in Russia, with fake fears that Ukrainians will prosecute them.

Let me introduce you to Peter Zeihan........

Edit: I disagree with a lot of his stuff (Russia outlasting Ukraine, etc.), but he makes a lot of good points and talks about things that a lot of others ignored until the invasion.

Ok this is serious hardcore graphic, so you’ve been warned. Complete destruction of tracked vehicle with burnt Orc corpses scattered about, one of which landed on the roof of an adjacent building. The narrator says something like, “this is what happens when you come uninvited”.

No surprise, and we've all heard this (remixed) a bazillion times in social media videos.

I was rooting for Moldova's entry:

If Moldova merged into Romania, it would make a hell of a new national anthem.  Would love to see the stands rock out to it at an Olympic medal ceremony.

Zeihan said he'd be surprised that if the Russian emigration was under 500,000 this year, and so far it's well over 300,000, with over 50,000 IT specialists alone.

And he's right, the Ukrainian military forces were worse than the Russians size-wise, but the leadership really fucked over the Russian military.

Russia's mass kidnapping is probably multi-faceted.

1.  Attempt at permanently reducing Ukraine's population.  If the country survives, at least it is weaker.

2.  De facto slave labor force.

3.  Hostages for monetary and political ransom.  Ukraine will have to pay big money or other favors to get (some of) them back, money it doesn't have.  So another way to extort money for Russia, while perhaps further weakening/slowing the recovery of Ukraine economically.

4. Just pure brutal assholery:  "You may someday kick our military out, but you will never be truly whole again.

The Czars did this exact same thing to the Volga Germans in the 1800's.  Take their children and all the sudden they were much more...compliant.  And lol it doesn't work.  Lotsa Volga Germans moved to Iowa and the Dakotas in the late 1800's.  Three genrations later and they're still mad at the World, nttawwt.

The problem with Zeihan is he’s too hyperbolic with his presentation of things - it’s either “ok” or “FUCKED!!!!!” If he would dial that down and be a little more nuanced his predictions would be more accurate. He is somewhat entertaining though.

I don't know if they treated the Black Sea Germans the same, but my mom gave me a booklet of her family history and from what I've skimmed is they settled near Odessa then emigrated to Tripp South Dakota in the 1870's. I'm going to have to reread in full soon.

Way too Malthusian, even if his basic premises are in the right realm.

So serious question here - Prior to the Russian invasion, we heard a lot about how Ukraine was a corrupt country; and they struggled to take out Russian-backed insurgents, and gave up Crimea.

But after Russia invaded, all of the sudden they got their shit together and turned from Bruce Banner into the Hulk?

I know Zelenskyy and his predecessor Poroshenko were both trying to stamp out corruption and end the fighting with Russia. But it seems like they had the chops to take out Russian backed separatists and re-take Crimea if they wanted to. So explain it to me like I'm a 5 year old. What happened since February 24?

Ukraine got serious about overhauling their military after 2014. They started training with US and NATO forces and adopting US/NATO methods instead of the old Soviet methods.

As atom said, once they proved they were going to roll over for Russia we started backing them with better weapons.

Prior to Russia's invasion Ukraine had some defensive weapons that could keep the breakaway areas in check but nothing required to go on the offensive.  When Russia attacked Ukraine used their new tactics and unit cohesion to impressive levels and the western powers that be decided they'd leveled up and are now sending the heavy stuff.  NOW they have the tools needed (mostly, they could use more air power) to gain ground.

Also, the Russians ended up being an unintentional supplier of heavy arms as well, courtesy of Ukrainian tractors.
