Japan's "hikikomori"

Modern day hermits who choose to live in isolation. 30,000 people die alone in Japan every year, so many that several businesses have sprouted up out of the need to clean apartments and houses where people have died and then gone unnoticed for long periods of time. Pretty crazy stuff.

It’s a very interesting phenomenon. I’ve known people who lost family to it.

There are many reasons but the way they explained it to me was that their family member developed a feeling of being unable to cope with rigorous demands of Japanese society and rather than shame themselves or their famthey stayed inside away from everyone.

Its almost like that had pathologically low self-esteem
