I mean, we're still at 50% success rate with the Falcon Heavy, so let's not get too far ahead of ourselves. Hopefully they continue to improve.

uh... dude.  they just stuck all 3 cores on a geosynchronous transfer orbit mission.  the economics of big loads have been obliterated by 300%.

musk is now the undisputed king of the mountain.  love him or hate him, he just locked up a Trillion dollars of launch contracts.  yes. One Trillion.

Only on Surly does the Falcon Heavy get tucked up into a Pence moon thread. That launch and landing deserves to be a dedicated SpaceX thread.

Given how much Pence and others want to rush things, Falcon Heavy may play a big part in getting to the moon.

Don't think they can do it in 5 years (need a lander among many other things), but if they are going to accelerate it, SpaceX is gonna be a main player.

It’s 2019. It’s easy to land a robot.  Oh.

https://www.cnn.com/2019/04/11/middleeast/israel-moon-landing/index.html

Quote

Israel's Beresheet, the first privately-funded mission to the moon, has crashed.

The spacecraft aimed to perform a soft landing on the moon and would have made Israel the fourth country to do so -- and by far the smallest. Only the United States, the former Soviet Union and China have done it before.

"I am sorry to say that our spacecraft did not make it in one piece to the moon," said Opher Doron, the manager of Israel Aerospace Industries' Space Division.

"We made it all the way to the moon. This is a great accomplishment. We are the seventh country to make it all the way to the moon."

Wonder what sort of contaminants that leaves. I'd imagine there's a lot of toxic shit on a vehicle.

Would you say it is more or less than what we left on the moon from our 6 successful missions 50 years ago?
You know things like those cool lunar rovers we left just sitting up there ( I wonder if they still have the keys in them?), lunar landers and ascent modules (which crashed back on the moon after getting the crew back to the command module) and a bunch of debris from USA, Russia, China, Japan, India and the European space agency.

I don't thing the cute little lander the Israelis accidentally dropped up there will make that much of an environmental impact.

Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin (and all of the other moon-walkers) literally tossed their bags of shit and piss onto the moon.  No metaphors.  Bags of shit and piss.

Good thing they weren't aggy, or there would be weeks worth of jizz jars up there.

Lockheed Martin speeding up this lander design.

Lockheed Martin has announced a new design for a human-rated lunar lander. The design comes only days NASA officially declared its objective of returning humans to the moon by 2024.

The global aerospace and weapons manufacturer is putting an emphasis on speed in its new plan. The company's Space Exploration website leads with"Getting to the Surface of the moon Faster." To that end, the new lander wouldn't be entirely new—it would share components of a crew capsule named Orion, which is currently being built for NASA by Lockheed. These wouldn't be small parts of the new lander, they include flight computers and life support systems.

Lots more at the links above.

I vote that instead of robotic spacecraft or manned spacecraft, we send cyborgs.  They would survive by eating lasers.

Brings up some good points. What is the point of landing on the moon? What can we gain from it? What do we gain from sending people to the moon? In other words, what is the short-term and long-term mission? What is the vision?

Jeff Bezos poked his head up to say “hi”.

https://www.blueorigin.com/blue-moon

Quote

Blue Moon is a flexible lander delivering a wide variety of small, medium and large payloads to the lunar surface. Its capability to provide precise and soft landings will enable a sustained human presence on the Moon.

Blue Moon can land multiple metric tons of payload on the lunar surface.

The top deck and lower bays easily accommodate a wide variety of payloads, including large payloads and ESPA-class payloads with standard ring port interfaces. There are lower mounting locations for payloads, useful for closer access to the lunar surface and off-loading.

Quote

The Blue Moon lander can deliver large infrastructure payloads with high accuracy to pre-position systems for future missions. The larger variant of Blue Moon has been designed to land an ascent vehicle that will allow us to return Americans to the Moon by 2024.

Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos unveiled the company's "Blue Moon" lunar lander on Thursday, as well as a new BE-7 rocket engine.

"I love Vice President Pence's 2024 lunar landing goal," Bezos said, adding that Blue Origin can meet that timeline "because we started this three years ago."

Bezos invests more than $1 billion in Blue Origin each year, through sales of his Amazon shares.

We were given a gift — this nearby body called the moon," Bezos said. He added that the moon is a good place to begin manufacturing in space due to its lower gravity than the Earth. Getting resources from the moon "takes 24 times less energy to get it off the surface compared to the Earth," Bezos said, and "that is a huge lever."

The Blue Moon lander can bring 3.6 metric tons to the lunar surface, according to Bezos.

Bezos also unveiled the company's BE-7 rocket engine at the event. The engine will be test fired for the first time this summer, Bezos said. It's largely made of "printed" parts, he added.

"We need the new engine and that's what this is," Bezos said.

So about that NASA funding

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/trump-nasa-moon-pell-grant-student-loan-crisis-funding-money-space-a8915696.html

Quote

Under a new proposal from the Trump administration sent to Congress, the president is asking that some $1.6bn in funding be reallocated from the US federal Pell Grant program into NASA, citing a budget surplus for the grant represents the largest source of aid for low-income students in America.

The money is being sought in order to help launch a mission to the moon in 2024, a full four years earlier than initially planned by the space agency.

We're going back to the moon so we can get to Mars.  We're going to Mars for the very simple reason...because it's next.

There are no Gods out there.  Only opportunities.

Only two things that get the human race motivated:  Looking for natural resources and war.  Since the agricultural revolution, all of our progress is marked by exploration or fighting.  The technological windfall of a trip to Mars will take our species in a direction we can't even begin to articulate right now.  And that's why we're going...to prove to ourselves that most of what occupies our minds right now...doesn't really matter.

https://arstechnica.com/science/2019/05/nasas-full-artemis-plan-revealed-37-launches-and-a-lunar-outpost/

shit is getting real.

Quote

In the nearly two months since Vice President Mike Pence directed NASA to return to the Moon by 2024, space agency engineers have been working to put together a plan that leverages existing technology, large projects nearing completion, and commercial rockets to bring this about.

Last week, an updated plan that demonstrated a human landing in 2024, annual sorties to the lunar surface thereafter, and the beginning of a Moon base by 2028, began circulating within the agency. A graphic, shown below, provides information about each of the major launches needed to construct a small Lunar Gateway, stage elements of a lunar lander there, fly crews to the Moon and back, and conduct refueling missions.

Quote

This decade-long plan, which entails 37 launches of private and NASA rockets, as well as a mix of robotic and human landers, culminates with a "Lunar Surface Asset Deployment" in 2028, likely the beginning of a surface outpost for long-duration crew stays. Developed by the agency's senior human spaceflight manager, Bill Gerstenmaier, this plan is everything Pence asked for—an urgent human return, a Moon base, a mix of existing and new contractors.

Whole article worth reading.  Ars has sources saying $6-8 billion a year on top of the normal budget.

i want a human lunar landing in 2024.  that would be boss.  those assholes went to the moon and wowed all the baby boomers then things just stopped once the boomers controlled the budget.  a whole generation watched man touch the stars and were inspired to . . . do nothing.  we are down to 4 people alive that have ever walked on a surface of any body other than earth.  aged 83, 83, 86, 89.

Those 4 are probably younger than the folks who controlled the budget strings over the last 30 years.

SLS is 209,000 to 290,000 lbs to LEO

BFR is 220,000

falcon heavy is 63,800.  not in the same ballpark.

in comparison the Saturn V was 310,000.

edit: Ares V would have been 414,000.  that was a giant fucking rocket.  i heard your mom was interested.

edit2: pulled a lockheed on the saturn v payload figure

BFR = Big Fucking Rocket?
