The University has suspended the Texas Cowboys for 6 years

The crazy thing is these kids are wealthy beyond imagination.  The kid who died was the son of the founder of a wealth management group.  They have all the access in the world and they still letting people probe them to join a club?

I'm just speculating but I bet the hazing got wild because they had some legacy members in their leadership who wanted to do it like their dads used to.
Dude, it's Bilderberg training.

holy shit those dipshits are fucking stupid.  i'm a former Cowboy and went through as a newman the year before Gabe died.  I was not out there when it happened and never did any hazing at all.  never tapped in any other class or any of the other nonsense.  shit is hard enough as it is without all that crap.  the previous posters that said that the frat boys that get off on hazing were the pussy betas are dead on target.  just the lowest pieces of shit on campus.
I did my share of stupid shit on the 40 acres but it was mostly self inflicted and not lording fake power over others.  anyway, if the Cowboys cannot run a squeaky clean org for the sake of firing the cannon on game days, then fuck them.  let someone else do it.
As a newman?

Well there is the problem right there.

i don't know what it would take.  a permanent alumni to keep repeating don't be a fucking dumbass that speaks to the Cowboys once a quarter or something.  I guess all it takes is one student in a marginal position of power to start asserting that hazing is cool and we need to 'bring back the tradition of being mean and putting kids lives in danger' because that's how it was.
I have never so much as set foot at any alumni function for the Cowboys or had anything to do with them after Gabe died.  I don't plan to or want to go and fix their issues. Maybe that's shitty on me, but the org kinda lost me when my friend was killed and I am not that inclined to help out.  pulling 98% of the Cowboys from the greeks did not work.  they either need to shut the greeks out and find another source of students who will not let their members die from organizational hazing our let the EE dept build a robot to fire the cannon.
Robot fire Smokey?

Uh good idea?

When I was the cartoonist for the Daily Texan back in the 90s I did cartoons about when they killed the Higgins kid. I was threatened with physical violence. Crazy. These fuckers need to not exist.

Just wanna chime in off this. Was editor of my college paper (in Texas, but not UT) and wrote a story about a kid dying (TKE iirc) and the subsequent investigation that hit their charter revoked (my hed in 270 pt was TK-O). Anyway after that story I had death threats and had campus cops escort me around after some bro showed up in my office with a knife.

I had people scream from their dorm rooms I ruined their lives.

It was pretty great.

Frats are ruined by Neanderthals. Burn it all down. Let some charity wear a uniform and play war, it’ll make zero diff.

Art.  I saw that play.  Crazy dude pays 100k for a blank canvas.  My buddy said hey I loved you in Billy Madison.  Newman said that was some other fat dude.

I like this idea, but unfortunately Bellmont will take it too far. "And today's Taco Cabana Celebrity Cannon Shooter sponsored by Samsung is  comedian and TV personality John Mulaney. It was a response to the "assertion" in post 115 that the University does much for either organization other than grant them access to the field.

Sorry for the confusion, Twice. I meant all that comes along with that access: visibility/prestige with other students/alumni, access at road/bowl games, University sponsored events/banquets/etc., getting on national tv. These students are being showcased to the nation as examples of UT’s best and the only way to be one is have a rich alum daddy and put up with a semester of butt play, hamster biting, and near death drinking.

Let the Pom Girls fire Old Smoky. That would be pretty unique.

Real Texas Wimmen like big guns anyway. No dildo flippers need apply.

I think it moved.  Girls in chaps firing a cannon sounds pretty great to me. Way better than douchebags in tan wranglers.

The latter organization is way too similar to the Aggie brainwashing and hazing shit my brother experienced in the early 90’s.  One of the main reasons I made a better choice and became a Longhorn.

I’m getting confused, are the TexAs Cowboys a Greek organization like Acacia or Farmhouse?   For some reason I’ve feel like I’ve heard former Cowboys also talking about being in fraternities before joining Cowboys.  ?

He went to the Texas one.  Is the question because I spelled it right?  I don’t see the point in writing aggy, it feels too much like calling us tu. No need for me to belittle them with a childish nickname,  they do a fine job embarrassing themselves.

back to figuring out who’ll fire the cannon.

It is supposed to be like tu. It is a parody of the aggy tu foolishness. So he went to NMSU Muleshoe?

OK cool. Hookem.

And as far as firing "the cannon" don't you corpse turds do that?

I smell aggy.

Went to Texas and graduated twice.  My brother went to Texas A&M.  I get what ‘aggy’ means and I happen to think using it is on the level of them calling us tu, like my Aggie brother does.  I refuse to act like an Aggie, but I guess you are ok with it.

I know you will always beat me on post count, which seems to matter here, so I will bow out of this meaningless pissing match.

They were punished for similar shit back in the mid 70’s.  Don’t think these assholes are trying to “figure out how to do things a little differently”.  They’ve had plenty of chances & they never change.  No place for this crap in 2019 imo.

Do you really not know?  Traditionally, Cowboys were primarily frat guys.  I don't believe there were formal rules on it, but say SAE had two Cowboys, those two would select two more SAEs to the organization.  There were always a few independent Cowboys, usually athletes or other prominent campus figures selected by the general membership.  The primary membership criteria was being a "good dude" or "stud," although grades and stuff sometimes counted too, depended a lot on what the frat and its Cowboys valued.

Since the Higgins suspension, one of the reforms has been to open membership to application and interview.  It's still a majority frat guys, but far less than at any time in its history.

I was at Texas 88-92 and that’s the way I remember it as well. I was in a Frat , but not a Spur or TC. I believe 2 per semester for Spurs/TC  selected. From my vantage point they  were all great guys, who when influenced by a small idiot minority, would do stupid shit like a lot of us at that age.

I guess another point of clarification.  The primary hazing events back in the day were "tap in," the night the new members were selected.  To carry on with the example, the SAE Cowboys would "tap in" a new man, which involved giving him a bottle of whiskey for anesthesia and taking him to some location where he was paddled extensively.  There could be ongoing hazing, usually perpetrated on a house-by-house basis during the new man semester.  That is, the SAE Cowboys would do shit to the SAE new men, and sometimes it would be a joint effort, that is the SAEs and ATOs would fuck with their new men in a group.  To my knowledge, that was fairly minimal, in comparison to being a frat pledge.

Then there was Picnic, which was a gathering of the entire body of Cowboys and new men for initiation at the end of the semester and where (or in relation to) the two fatal events have occurred.  Again, to my knowledge, that was a day/night of excessive drinking, mostly voluntary but definitely urged/encourages, paddling, and stupid male tricks, generally.  I think the physical stupidity was mostly frat-on-frat and the independents could participate or not as they saw fit.

I suppose that carries on to present, with exceptions here and there (two have noted exceptions post-Higgins).  It seems risky (beyond the risk inherent in stupid male tricks) to continue in that vein with as many independent members as they have now.  In the ancient past, the independent members were like as not to be frustrated frat guys who were "down with the sickness" anyway (ie athletes who didn't have the money or time to pledge, but would have if not athletes).  Nowadays, not so much.

Spurs very similar.

That would explain the group's obvious commitment to diversity

No, I really did not know.  So I asked the question.  So some of these guys went through two different layers/levels of butt-stuff, one for their fraternity and one for Cowboys?

I did not understand how UT being almost universally liberal/progressive/inclusive in their policies continued to put elitist and exclusive orgs like Cowboys and Spurs on a pedestal with special privileges, recognition, and notoriety.

It's a dialectic. It swings back and forth. My great-grandfather was an admin at UT twice. He was considered a liberal for his time, which essentially meant he favored academics and academic freedom over stressing football and dumbing down classes to suit the religious conservatives. Call his the J. Frank Dobie wing -- his enemies were led by Homer Stark. Great-grandfather would get fired or resign when the right would take over the BoR and rehired when "the left" would take over again. (Quotes because by today's standards they would be extreme right. My great-grandfather thought FDR was a Pinko, for example.

The cooler actives did allow the sadistic bottom-feeders to do their dirty work for them, though. Or at least that was how it worked in my case. Seems like that there was the shitty active's only valued role, the method by which they carried their weight -- to torture the pledges during Hell Week specifically and during pledgeship in general.

Yeah, over the course of its history, the term "classical liberal" might well be applied to UT.  But more modern definitions, like "social liberal" or "progressive" are probably only applicable from the 60s on.  And there have always been hardshells like Erwin and Shivers and whatnot occasionally tilting it away from even classically liberal.

Do you have all the nubs on your precious rubbed off yet?

Which class are you?

Please stop. You’re embarrassing yourself. The depth of your debating skill is to use one tactic over and over.  Since you can’t think of anything clever, you just call me an Aggie.  Did you think the 4th time would really zing me?

As for the topic at hand, I think the Spurs satisfy our need for an on field game day organization that effectively excludes at least 99% of the student population from even being considered for inclusion. Let the Cowboys back on campus in 6 years to focus on charitable good deeds and seatbelt awareness.  They can even wear their fancy outfits wherever they want.  Just don’t let them back on the field to embarrass us yet again.

Short of Pom firing the cannon, which would be awesome on TV, how about we give the honor of firing the cannon to an honors organization for exceptional academic achievement?  We could showcase our best and brightest, include representatives from as much of the student body as possible, and a few could have their achievements highlighted on the Jumbotron each week.

I'm not sure those kids even attend the football games let alone want to dress up and learn how to operate a cannon over the course of 4 hours in 90 degree heat.

Just have the Spurs do it. They can add more members if they need to. Anything else seems like a disater waiting to happen on gameday.

Maybe ending their systematic exclusion from certain gameday traditions would increase interest and attendance amongst these folks.  I can’t imagine it is so hard a task that only white guys and a few token others can handle it. fwiw, I am white but never would have been considered for the cowboys or spurs.  I just didn’t run in those circles. A path to get in on this gameday stuff through merit would have been pretty awesome to strive for.
