Shut your whore mouth!  Joe T. Garcia's is a Tex-Mex shrine.  As is Matt's El Rancho in Austin.  Ojeda's in Dallas.  Navigation Ninfa's in Houston.  Mi Tierra in San Antonio.  Long live these shrines!

I’m a little disgruntled that you would put ninfa’s in the same category as the others but I endorse the point.

Chicago is the one major US city I have not lived in.  There is a big reason for that and it is called November to April.

You've lived in EVERY other major city in the United States? What is the dividing line for "major" versus "not major"? Atlanta, Philadelphia, DC, Boston, San Francisco, Seattle, Denver? Are these major or not major?

Cities with a population of over 2M.  There are only 4.  Phoenix is next and it has 1.6M.  That is a pretty big drop off between the top 4 and everything else.

Okay, so exclusive of metropolitan area, it's just the number of people who live inside whatever the arbitrary city limits may be.

Absolutely.  Because in the NY Metro area, Hoboken and Jersey City are NOT New York City, even though they are part of the MSA.  For Los Angeles, San Bernadino and the Inland Empire may be part of the MSA, but they are not Los Angeles.  And finally, looking Houston, Katy, The Woodlands, and Kingwood are not Houston, even if they are part of the MSA.

Right, but thinking about it the other way, the metropolitan area of DC is enormous, but DC is not a major city? DC, Atlanta, and Miami metropolitan areas are all roughly the same size as Houston. Houston's area is nearly 700 miles, but Miami's area is more like 55 miles. DC's area is 68 miles.

Why am I arguing about this, you might ask? I just realized I have no idea. Stupid internet. I don't care what you do. Have a nice day.

No worries.  I was just thinking about why Washington DC isn't as big as NYC last night while watching Hamilton, especially given the deal that was made to move the capital of the US from New York city (it was in what is today's Lower Manhattan) to Washington DC.

What a lot of people do not realize is that originally, New York City was JUST Manhattan.  The 5 boroughs consolidated on January 1, 1898.  The history is fascinating.

The average weight of a Katy resident is a testament to that.

It’s why they all have to evacuate for hurricanes, the gravitational pull of Katy’s fat aggys would force those hurricanes though houston and devastate the city

I agree with most of this list but staying true to the thread, Matt's El Rancho is terrible. Granted the last time I ate there was in 96.

The “black drink” of the Comanches; they traveled annually to the Texas coast to the yaupon groves for ceremonies.  Much vomiting and many hallucinations followed.  I have a yaupon right outside my preferred couch, but I’m afraid of it-

"Asi a'hola" is the black drink in pre-Columbian Florida, and it gave the Oceola tribe their name.

The vomiting was due to quantity consumed, not from the beverage itself. So long as you don't down a gallon of it, you should be fine.

Matt’s has a nice patio and good drinks. The food is perfectly acceptable and is above average Austin Tex-Mex. I don’t really understand the hate.

Surly posters will cut you for talking down on Maudie’s, but it’s perfectly acceptable to shit on Matt’s. Surly can be a strange place.

Wow, W P, you’re one of my favorite posters, but I didn’t expect a comment on a 2 month old comment.

fascinating tidbit on the Osceola

I don’t think yaupon contains any hallucinogens (unlike, say, the Texas Mountain Laurel) but it is pretty highly caffeinated; I imagine drinking a gallon of weak Folger’s would lead to something like visions!  I’m still not dragging my lazy ass off the couch to pick enough leaves and berries to make a gallon of yaupon tea, so I guess I’m safe.

Why the fuck do people serve mussels?

If I want white wine and garlic bread, why do I have to deal with some random shells.  You want a hint of seafood, shoot an oyster with it.

But mussels are just fucking pointless and they definitely aren’t a main fucking dish.

My man. Mussels are just space and effort that could've spent on more oysters.

I applaud the mussels eaters for helping preserve a healthy population of oysters.

You guys have definitely found the appropriate forum for the expression of these unpopular [dare I say incorrect, without invoking CR?] opinions!

Counterpoint: moules frites. On a sidewalk cafe somewhere in southern France, in the company of someone way more attractive than you.

The lady can have whatever she wants.  I’ll stick with the wine, some bouillabaisse, and a couple of her fries.  Or throw in some fried smelt or anchovies or any of the other tiny fish.

The mussels are just fucking pointless.

Reading this thread for the first time in months ... yeesh. Matt's El Rancho is awesome. NOLA is fucking great as a food town. Someone posted a picture of Chili's nachos as the "right" way to do nachos. Listen, I like them prepared that way as well, but you don't have to enter a fucking Chili's to make that happen.

Also, Korean food blows. I mean, I've never eaten a single Korean dish and thought "yeah, I'll have that again."

Also also, I don't know what the fuck is going on in Houston with Dish Society, Common Bond, Local Foods, and Cafe Express. Women always bring these up as places where we should meet for lunch. They're all different versions of tasteless shit. I met one today at Dish Society in The Heights. I didn't feel like arguing over text, but she should have known better. Anyway, I get there and I see a "Houston Hot Sandwich", so I figure, well, maybe this won't suck. Nope. Tasteless crap. Just saute some fucking cardboard and throw it on a pretzel bun.

Finally, any new "craft" burger joint probably sucks and serves a fucking burger that looks way better than it tastes. Hubcap Grill in The Heights is the last good one I've been to that was worth the hype. Beck's Prime makes a bland, tasteless burger that people harp on. Bernie's Burger Bus used to get the same credit. Most of the acclaimed burger places in other towns like NYC have the same problems. Just give me a QPC over unseasoned burger pic porn.

Escargot > mussels. As an app, though.

But also this. Ain’t nothing wrong with a good mussel. Especially in a nice seafood pasta. I fuck with the seafood scampi at Juliet although overall they can be hit or miss.

I stopped reading right there.  Stick to football.

Sir, that presumes I know anything more about football than I do good food. I am a Texan and could eat TexMex at every fucking meal. Matt's is an excellent institution and needs no shade throwing. That doesn't mean you have to quit liking Manuel's or La Casita or Fonda San Miguel or whatever hipster place your SO is dragging you to for Taco Tuesday.

Fonda's is a hipster place? It's also not Tex-Mex.
