I also just want to say that Kitchenaid Mixers are THE SHIT!

And if you're kind of handy, you can get some really damn cheap. Case in point, I now have procured 3 of them for a grand total of $75 to get them in working order.

The first one was a K5SS (the holy grail of Kitchenaids - the solid state version of their first gen K5A, from the 70s-80s, it still says Hobart) I got at a garage sale for $10. It needed some TLC and I didt some pictures of the restoration of it on the old site. It went from that yuck almond to bronze. I'm about to paint it black soon. More pictures of this one soon.

Next I got a tilt head artisan for free. The catch was that the gears were stripped. That was a $10 part. And a super easy fix, it's literally the most common kitchenaid mixer video on YouTube. That ended up being a gift for my niece.

Finally about 3 weeks ago I got a Professional 5 Plus, also free. In this case the planetary fell off it. That was a slightly pricier part of $50, but still a far cry from the $450 this mixer usually runs. And also not a majorly complex fix. And this one is in great shape, I'm a little torn which to make my primary, this one or old trusty.

And let me also just say, if you have a kitchenaid and don't have a meat grinder - what's wrong with you? Hands down the best thing I might have in my kitchen. Forget store ground meat, you can do your own for much cheaper and much leaner. Plus I've made breakfast sausage in it that is better than anything from the store.

This. When I got divorced a couple of years ago I made damn sure the mixer went with me. I even gave up the le creuset in the trade.

  2. I think for the PAC it shouldn't be about increasing the size of the pie necessarily but about expanding into the central timezone to gain more visibility on the national stage. Add a couple of programs like Tech and  OkSt that are respectable enough to keep the pie relatively the same size but now you have kickoffs that people on the east coast might actually see.

not a bad place at all…great Thai, sushi, Salt and Straw pear and bleu cheese ice cream hit the spot for sure.

oddities…there’s a vegan titter not far from where we’re at, so yeah.  i have no clue what a vegan titter is, but i guess it involves hairy pits, legs and bush.  and patchouli.  but whatever floats a boat.

    good visit…we’ll be back.

Casa Diablo! Food menu is all vegan and no fur, leather, etc worn by the dancers on stage. Other than that, your normal garden variety full nudity titter.

  4. Booked a flight a while back and at some point it got rescheduled. I was aware of this but on the day of the flight I spaced and had the original (later) flight time in my head. Showed up in time for the original flight but not for the actual flight. Plane was still there but was told it was too late to board. Said no problem, my mistake, what can you get me on? Next available was leaving at midnight. Thanked her and let her do her thing. Almost finished, she thanks me for being so patient and understanding. I said that it was my mistake, why would I get mad at her and be an ass. She just looked at me and said "Everyone else does."

  5. If you are going out Hood River way, hit up Double Mountain. Cherry season is fixing to start so you can stop at the orchards on the fruit loop for berries and cherries.  Eem and Ox in NE Portland are both pretty tasty.

  6. Did Austin to Portland two years ago. Went up I-25 through CO, I-80 through WY to SLC, and then I-84 the rest of the way. Overnighted outside of Denver and Boise. Did it in 2.5 days but that was hard driving. Would definitely take my time if I do it again. Did it in April and still caught snow in CO and WY. Drive was beautiful, especially the last stretch on 84.

    4 lb pork shoulder

3/4 cup fresh squeezed orange juice

    2 limes juiced

    3/4 - 1 cup Mexican Coke

1 large onion cut into wedges

    8 cloves garlic smashed

    1 tbs oregano

    1 tbs cumin

    2 bay leaves

    Salt & pepper

Throw it all in a Dutch oven at 300 degrees for 6 hours. Then shred the pork. Heat 1 tbs oil in a skillet over high heat, toss in the shredded pork for a quick sear, then ladle about 1/2 cup of the braising liquid and let it reduce by about half.

Super easy, super good. The Coke takes it to another level and adds a nice caramelization to the seared pork.

Also, the Dutch oven is a pretty large vessel for the amount of liquid, so I turned the pork shoulder about 3-4 times in the oven throughout the 6 hours to make sure the braising was evenly distributed.

Covered or uncovered for 6 hours?

  8. Stayed at Phantom Ranch for a couple of nights a few years back. It was mid-March and we took the South Kaibab trail down. It was in the mid-30s and icy when we started at the rim. By the time we got to the river it was in the mid-90s. I can't even imagine how hot it would be in July.

Took Bright Angel back to the top and there were so many fucking tourists during the last mile or so it was unreal. Playing guitars, tossing frisbees, taking dogs, etc. I wanted to just start throwing people over the edge.

For those who can't bring themselves to listen to the full clip, the interview with Bruce Feldman starts around 25:00. They proceed to blow each other over the TexAgs/Athletic partnership until 29:00ish before moving on to aggy/sec talk. Texas in the playoff prediction occurs around 36:00.

You can obtain passable BBQ outside of Texas.  The brisket doesn't measure up, but passable bbq is available.  Tex-Mex, on the other hand, is almost universally awful outside of Texas.

Having moved to Portland six weeks ago I have to say this is the godawful truth. Hit up every Tex-Mex place you can.

And HEB. Man I miss HEB. Fred Meyer can kiss my ass.
