The fuck does "the Greeks aren't here. The Romans aren't here," mean?

That the Jewish people outlasted multiple other powers that have conquered/attacked Israel in the past . . . and maybe Greeks and Romans fit the meter better than Ottomans and Babylonians.

Looks like UC Santa Cruz is creeping up in my daughter's rankings.  Anyone have experience with that school?

I used to fish on a river near Santa Cruz and would occasionally encounter what appeared to be UCSC students.  Based on those experiences, my impression is that UCSC students really like to do psychedelics in the woods.

Anyone been to Ezov?  If so, curious to hear about it.

Once about a month after it opened.  Food was really good, and overall more interesting than comparable places I have been in Austin (e.g. Peacock).  It was loud.  Really long dinner . . . as in I had to ask the waiter whether they had forgotten to put in several of the dishes and noticed nearby table having the same issue.

The Domain dances on Austin’s grave

Actually, no.  The Domain is great because (1) I dont ever have to go there; and (2) it keeps all of the northern suburbanites from coming into Austin proper.

If you want to talk dancing on Austin's grave . . . there is a Hermes boutique on South Congress.

Yep. It’s no more complicated than that. I lived in Austin from 1995-1999, 2002-2005, 2012-2013. Guess which version is the best?

The one where you were youngest and had the least responsibility?

Austin has definitely changed a lot.  But I cant help thinking that we are all conflating Austin changing and loss of our youth.  The young people here still seem to be having a pretty good time.

  6. Most of the stuff I look at is more targeted towards middle aged guys (putthison.com, Drake's lookbook, DieWorkwear, etc.), so maybe not the best fit for a 20 yr old.   Todd Snyder and No Man Walks Alone sell semi-classic clothes a stylish 20 year old might like, but the prices are too high for most people that age.

Maybe tell him to check out EdgyAlbert on Insta/TikTok.  Guy has tolerable style compared to most Gen Z influencers.

  7. Of that list, the only one that has any argument for best of all time is Garcia.  He has his own definitive style and is not just copying others (like Clapton).  And millions of people across multiple generations (most of which are not guitar players) love to listen to extended Dead jams.  It would be hard to think of another guitar player that has inspired so many non-guitar players to listen to lengthy guitar-driven instrumental music.  A similar argument could probably be made for Page or Gilmore given how iconic a lot of their guitar riffs/solos are and that LZ and PF have retained relevance to a broad audience over the decades.

I suspect most guitar players would say Hendrix or whoever their favorite jazz player is.

  8. Neil is my tone hero . . . especially on Like a Hurricane and the Deadman soundtrack.  I also love the tone on pretty much any Ry Cooder recording or anything I have seen from Blake Mills.

Is there a consensus on quality dark jeans that are neither cut too skinny nor too dad jean, without any sort of branding on the back pockets? Does such a thing exist? 511 Levi’s are a bit too skinny, 501s a bit too billowy.

It used to be the norm to show up to client dinners in a suit, which I prefer, but post pandemic almost everyone seems to be wearing jeans on a regular basis.

Edit to add: by “quality” I don't mean some concrete rigid Japanese denim I have to wear every day unwashed for 3 years before they look like an actual pair of blue jeans.

Nothing wrong with 501s.  Everyone under 30 seems to be wearing rather full cut jeans these days, so something like 511s are actually now the "dad jeans".  501s also have a reasonably high rise, so they can work with a tucked in shirt.

If you want higher end than levis, other brands to look at would be RRL and Imogene & Willie.

If you were Arsenal, would you rather have McKennie? or Musah?

Musah.  But I think Arteta would be great for McKennie's development -- especially fixing the defensive lapses we see from Wes.

  11. I dont know much about Kurzawa.  Just went to look at his stats, and it seems he missed last season and was only playing in about half of PSG's ligue 1 games in the years before that.

I'd say the most important part is to get him to be a guitar player instead.

Working on that too!  I gave him my old baby Taylor and have been showing him some chords.  But the kid is way more interested in learning drums.

  13. Questions for the hive mind:

My 9 year old son wants to learn drums.  I think it will be a much easier sell to the wife if I get him an electric kit.  But will an electric kit hinder learning or create bad habits?

Also, at age 9 does it make more sense to get a full sized kit or kid sized?  I want to play around on it too . . . so leaning towards an adult kit.

  14. The 2011 OSU team was really fun to watch.  The way they dominated RG3 was hilarious, the comeback against aggie was fantastic, and they handed OU one of its worst losses in modern history.  The bowl game against Stanford was fantastic . . . probably the two best teams in the country that year.

No offense but you have no fucking idea what you're talking about. The attacking talent in MLS is on average better than the keeping and defending talent and I wouldn't say it's all that close. Yet you're cool with us playing MLS keepers and CBs but not forwards?

Under Greg, the USMNT is trying to play possession based soccer.  You cannot do that effectively with attacking players with bad touch.  So, yeah, I have been totally fine with us playing Miles Robison, A Long, Zimerman, Turner, etc. because they don't cause us to lose possession or fuck up the build up play.  But Morris, Lletget, Yueill, Zardes and pretty much every other MLS based attacker sure do.

The only MLS based midfielders or forwards that should make the US WC roster are Acosta (who at most should only play as a ball winner to help see out games where we are winning) and JF.  And I sincerely hope that one of our euro based strikers can find enough form that we don't have to play JF.

But ultimately this is what worries me about the discussion of these MLS guys in the World Cup - they won't see this space against anyone we face (ok maybe Iraq). I think they struggle.

Totally agree.  This is exactly the reason why I am OK with an MLS keeper or center back, but don't want to see MLS guys on the USMNT in more technical positions when we face top level national teams.  When they don't have the space they are used to, guys freak out and either lose the ball  or play negative passes that kill momentum (see Lletget).  Remember what happened to Michael Bradley when he went from Seria A to MLS? . . . his ability to function under pressure seemed to deteriorate quickly.

The few guys in MLS that are more technical (e.g., Driussi, Herrera) stand out . . . and none of the Americans in the MLS really fall into that category.  Speaking of Driussi, he is clearly too good for the MLS yet has exactly zero caps for the Argentina men's team, which says something.

  17. I don't think CP could push Cuadrado or Di Maria out of the starting 11 right away . . . but they are both old AF, so Juve could be a good fit longer term.  It would certainly be fun to see CP and Wes on the same team.
