Went to Zion a few weeks ago, spectacular. The final half mile of Angels Landing was closed for repairs.
I would've never found out that last half mile was closed. That's unbelievable.

Midtown. The Establishment.
Thanks. I work in Midtown, will check it out.

Luckily it’s 25 miles away in some of the worst Atlanta traffic, so I don’t go very often.
I asked about WLW and the bartender said $65 a pour. Fuck that.Is this well-stocked bar in-town or OTP?

Friday, I had a glass of Larceny for the first time, very enjoyable. Yesterday, I enjoyed a glass of Old Forester 1897 B.I.B. Very easy drinking 100 proof. They have a nice bourbon list at Local Three in Atlanta. http://localthree.com/menus/menu_liquor.pdf

I've seen the videos of Felker wasted at Steamboat, but I've seen them a bunch of times and he's never been drunk to the point where it took away from the show. I would say there's a less than 10% chance he'll be fucked up, but that's significant enough one may not buy a ticket.
He is nowhere close to Todd Snider/Replacements level of unreliability.
Regarding the divorce, the other tidbit that floated out is that Felker is the new Mr. Miranda Lambert. They opened for her last year, and then a couple months ago they canceled some back yard Midwest gigs to open for her again. Seems like pure baseless speculation, but if that's the case, I think the next record will have some incredibly strong source material.
They're opening again for a portion of the Miranda Lambert/Little Big Town tour this summer. At least the crowd will get to hear some country music.
Saw TT last fall in Atlanta just after their last album release. Hell of a show, and Hulla's assessment of Crockett is spot on. Although Bird Hunters remains my favorite due to the hunting and shotgun references (Belgian-made Browning - my Dad's exact line when showing off his shotguns) and the narrowly dodged bullet of a fiance's family, Unrung is an outstanding song as well, along with Housefire.

I blew my L4-L5 at 34, read up on how 80 percent of all bulging discs can be resolved through PT or injections. MD said no, you're a surgical candidate. Microdiscectomy 19 years ago and it was the best outcome I could've imagined. I stopped playing in basketball leagues, but continued hiking and working and doing anything else I wanted. 17 years later, at 51, same symptoms, went back to my old neurosurgeon. After a number of excruciating PT sessions, he decided surgery was a need again. Day of surgery, I was home by 11am and, other than pain meds and muscle relaxers on the day of surgery, I took nothing but advil for the pain. Between a small re-rupture and scar tissue from the original surgery, doc said I'd never have resolved through PT or injections. It's been two years and I feel great.
The days of "never have back surgery because you'll be damaged for life" are over. Minimally invasive procedures were not mainstream when I had my first surgery almost 20 years ago. Now it's customary. Admittedly, surgery will always leave you with a damaged joint in your back, but it's a far cry from the chain saw days gone by.

I do.
Town of ~35,000 people. 30 minutes from Huntsville, one hour north of Birmingham, and one hour south of Nashville.
I grew up in a big city and I love that I've known my kids' friends since they were born.
Everybody knows all your business which can be a pain in the ass but I'm pretty boring so no one is dining out on gossip about me and mine.
Cullman? Are you on Smith Lake?
I’ve been planning my escape from Atlanta for 15 years. Built a small place on Logan Martin Lake in Alabama to make sure my wife could manage lake living. She was good with it, and I’m finishing up the retirement house now and will be there full time in 3-4 years. The town is 15,000, lake influence dampens the small town meth vibe and it’s 45 min to Birmingham and what it has. I’m on the lake and there is decent hiking nearby, and awesome fishing and hunting.

I'm in need of a 4 person tent... something that will easily fit the Cabela's cot I have. Obv. this rig will be for car camping, not backpacking, so I can afford to ask for stand up height which will add to the weight. A vestibule or awning is a nice feature but not a requirement. Probably a 3 season, no need for an Everest rated rig.
Any product suggestions? I'm kinda wanting to avoid the Wal Mart / Target brands & get something that will go the distance for a few years. I've seam-sealed the 8 or 9 year old Eureka! that I used all through our Cub Scouting years, but it's just not working any longer (the seam tape from the tent floor + the fly are coming apart).
Before long, I'll also be looking for a good long haul day-pack vs. a full on internal frame packer.
Thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions?
PS: My dog just let out a horrific fart. For the price, you could still do okay with another Eureka. If you have an REI membership, today's the last day to get 20% off one regular priced item. REI store brands are an option (they stand behind them), along with Marmot and Big Agnes if you want to spend a bit more.

Glad I stumbled onto this thread. Currently I do not hike or camp regularly but now that I'm in my mid-40's I am starting to get that itch again and have done a few small trips. I've never done any extensive hiking like JMT (bucket list) or anything like that, but I really want to get back into hiking & camping. I recently was speaking with a banker and the subject came up. He said he goes solo hiking all the time and exchanged several stories. He mentioned this was one of his favorite places to go hiking. Unfortunately most of my buddies have little time or interest in hiking so I may have to venture out on my own. I have always been in pretty good shape, but I probably couldn't make a 3 day hike up a mountain with a backpack this early in the game. Anyways, any advice or places you guys can recommend for a beginner would be great.
Hiking with a partner, like any other undertaking, works great if it’s a good partner. There are some real horror stories about bad hiking partners. I’ve been fortunate that my best friend is also my hiking partner. Sharing the load in carrying equipment and sharing responsibilities at the campsite both make a trip easier and more enjoyable.
Regarding footwear, I agree that the lighter shoes make for a very enjoyable trip. However, make sure you are carrying a light enough load that you don’t do damage to your feet with poor support.

I was on tapa when I replied earlier to the thread and was too lazy to search for a link.
I have the Bellroy Hide & Seek model. It comes in a regular and RFID model. I've had it for almost three years and it's held up very well.

Awesome. Living in Texas makes it pretty fucking difficult to get to one of the big 3 often enough to section hike it all, so I figure I'd rather take off for 6 months and just do it all.
I lived in east TN, Alabama and Atlanta metro during those 16 years, and we did it all south to north sequentially, so the logistics were easy to begin with. My buddy had family in Roanoke, VA so we also had a stopover for driving (over a quarter of the AT is in VA). Once we hit PA, though, it turned into a planes, trains and automobiles slog. Walking through Grand Central Station in NYC in hiking attire with pack, and then being on the trail later that day, was pretty cool.

C'mon man! You can do it all in one go! Whatever works for you though of course. I'm hoping to do the full PCT in a few years. Wife keeps wanting to buy shit though and fucks ups my plans.
I would really like to do it all at once, but I try to be realistic. I'd love to thru-hike the PCT as well, but I don't think I'll ever attempt a thru-hike of the PCT, CDT or AT. I sectioned all of the AT over 16 years and it was a blast. There were some of the longer trips where I really got my trail legs and could have kept going, and there were sections that I was relieved I didn't have to keep going. If a trip's not challenging, to me, something is lost in the adventure.

After thinking some more, if you could arrange drop off/pickup, starting at VVR (Vermillion Valley Resort) would be best.
You can hop on the Mono Creek trail and meet up with JMT.
Do NOBO for for part I into Yosemite. Ending at Happy Isles would be cool, then you can go get pizza and beer at the Pizza Deck.
Then do SOBO from same spot, and end on Whitney.
The problem is that the shuttle back to your car will be a big pain both times, and especially so on the SOBO route, since you have to go back around the Sierra Nevada to get back to the western side. Thanks again for the advice, really appreciate it. I think I'm willing to go through the hassle and expense of splitting it up as opposed to trying to do it all at once. I've never hiked over 200 miles in one trip. 170, 130 and 118 are my best efforts, all when I was a good bit younger and in better shape.

Thanks a bunch.

I know some people that have done the JMT and I know some about it myself but have never done it.
That’s all I got.Thanks. I'd like to break it into two sections instead of doing all 211 miles at one time, but options are limited.

Great photos. Other than a hike down to Phantom Ranch to catch a raft, all of my hiking has been in the east. I'm interested in doing the John Muir Trail. Anyone have experience with the PCT, JMT in particular. Thanks.

I have a bellroy brand wallet. I’ve had it for several years, it’s held up very well, and it holds everything that was in my old leather wallet with about half the thickness.

Enjoy getting the perspectives. I'm a creature of habit, enjoy Angel's Envy at the firepit, the wife likes Woodford in her old fashioned, and we keep Four Roses for high volume events. I've been meaning to try Larceny.
-
I make them at home for my wife frequently, usually with Woodford or Four Roses, simple syrup, orange bitters. If a restaurant has them on the drink menu, we always get one. There's a speakeasy near Atlanta that puts a little Port in with theirs, very good, and little place in Birmingham that makes a very good vanilla old fashioned. Everyone seems to have a twist on it. I'm not a fan of the muddled mess of orange pulp and marachinos.

Not necessary, they're usually pretty close between the 7/1 and 15.

I think they're unlikely to split the MS teams.
TX/aTm/Arky/OU
LSU/MState/OMiss/Mizzou
Bama/Auburn/TN/Vandy
GA/FL/KY/SC
Mizzou, LSU, or Arky could be arranged differently in the two western pods, but I believe the eastern two are likely.
