It could partially be a jurisdiction thing in Virginia causing the data quirk where a lot of cities in Virginia are "independent" of counties, and they're treated separately. That likely doesn't count for all the differences, and I don't know Virginia well, but that's one thing. The bolded seems to imply that a lot of cities are unincorporated, so they are dumped in with county data? I dunno.

There are 38 independent cities, which are considered county-equivalents for census purposes.

Many towns are as large as cities but are not incorporated as cities and are situated within a parent county or counties. Seven independent cities had 2020 populations of less than 10,000 with the smallest, Norton having a population of only 3,687.[1] In 2020, the largest towns were Leesburg (with 48,250 people) and Blacksburg (44,826). Six other towns also had populations of over 10,000 people.[1] For a complete list of these towns, see List of towns in Virginia. For major unincorporated population centers, see List of unincorporated communities in Virginia.

I live in this part of Virginia, and you've got it pretty well laid out.

Some time ago there was a fellow who ran for city council where I live. He was of the 'no taxes, I'm a fiscal conservative, no social benefits for the community unless there is a fiscal ROI' variety. His platform was quite austere and he wanted no money to go into the parks department, despite the rapid growth of the community. One of the city's requirements for developers was setting aside some land for a park (I think it depended upon subdivision size) and this guy objected because parks have to be maintained and he didn't think residents should have to pay for parks all over town, etc. Well, I happened to look up this guy and guess what? He lived across the street from a park, a very nice park that was well maintained by the city. But two miles away in a neighborhood where some apartments were being constructed--well those residents were going to be SOL if he got elected--just some green space with no equipment for the children like this guy's neighborhood had because we'd already paid for his. I might've put the word out about that and was relieved that a slightly different fiscal conservative got elected. One who didn't mind funding parks that benefit all of the citizens but also kept an eye out against wasteful spending in areas such as hiring the retired  friend of one of the other members as a "consultant" when reviewing building plans when the city had its own architect. LOL.

Where I live there is a long history of terrible treatment of the minority areas, including things like upkeep or improvements to parks.  So guess who was taking advantage of the nice parks in the nicer parts?

More recently there has been a clear effort to spread the wealth, so to speak, by the parks department.  For years I have run past this one particular park in a rough part of town, especially on longer runs on the weekends.  Happy to say that the last couple of years I see not just a lot of people but huge parties/events/cookouts at the improved facilities.  Like, I want to stop and see if they'll let me hang out, the food smells amazing.

The cynical side of me wonders about the motivation to spend $$$ to improve those certain parks.

I was shot down on my previous concern troll thread about this.  I'm not sure this holds for two reasons.

    1) Are we certain that the whole "incumbency" advantage counts when the opponent has served the immediate term before this.  I'm thinking most voters view both as having whatever advantages come from incumbency.

While I understand the question and look at history, why would you ever give up the "incumbency" advantage even if the opponent has effectively the same thing?  I wouldn't care to give up an advantage that puts me notably ahead, but it is pretty silly to give it up if it just brings me even.  Why start from (near) zero?

That's just sad on several levels.   I don't want anything to do with Vivek either but the average American can't tell the difference between someone of Indian descent vs. Saudi.

Worse, I'm thinking the average American doesn't give a shit about telling the difference between someone of Indian descent vs. Saudi

  5. Well I guess this goes here.  I think this place has made the rounds before, but CNN has a new story today on the Trump Store - just 12 or so miles from me.  I'd say FML, but I know the town manager there - FHL.  At least I don't think he's Trumpy from what I know, the rest of his family definitely is not.  It's got to be tough on him.

I do know that the last few times I've been through there the number of people there seemed much smaller than a couple years ago.

And of course the store owner's name is Whitey.

Walk into Trump Town USA in Boones Mill, Virginia, and you may marvel at the breadth of human creativity, as long as you’re not distracted by how the merchandise tackles some of the most controversial political issues in the most vulgar way possible. The most spectacular specimens are in the back right corner: pairs of silvery, veiny metal testicles hanging from a ring and wrapped in protective clear plastic. “That’s Trump’s balls,” the store’s owner, Whitey Taylor, explains. The smaller set costs $75, the larger, $125. They’re heavy.

    Quote

It’s like the Cave of Wonders from the movie Aladdin, except with more references to butts, poop and pee. A bumper sticker shows a cartoon Trump urinating on “Putin.” A keychain can be squeezed to make a tiny Trump defecate. “Moonie Trump” figurines depict the former president mischievously showing his naked backside.

But while Taylor offers many items denigrating President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and their Democratic Party, they don’t sell well. “They like the slogan. They like to read it,” Taylor said of the anti-Biden merchandise. But, “they won’t wear it.” Taylor had offered merch with a picture of Hillary Clinton in prison, “And they would say, ‘I don’t want that b*tch’s picture on my back.’ It was terrible.”

    Quote

His first item was a white T-shirt, and on the back, it read, “Donald Trump: Finally someone with balls.” Taylor said, “I became known as ‘the Balls Man’ on the tour.” If he skipped a campaign rally, other merchants would tell him college kids had come looking for him, asking, “Where’s the Balls Man?”

Somebody with better skills than I have needs to put some Balls (man) on his chin.

I got the first dose of the shingles vaccine yesterday.  Holy shit.  COVID vaccines got nothing on that sumbitch.  Headache, chills, fever, fever dreams.  It was not pleasant.  Then again, it’s not as bad as some of the horror stories I’ve read/heard about.

I got my fifth COVID vaccine shot a few months ago, and I’ve never had any side effects from those.  But Shingrix is on a whole other level.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but that shecond shingles shot is shittiest.

    jesus.

but i had to laugh at that bowling alley video. the person that gets under the score table - they must teach that. when i was there i experienced one "major" 4.7 earthquake. i was teaching a kid and the earthquake hit. his mom was waiting in the waiting room. did she come get him? no. she got under the fucking table haha

They do.  Along the lines of Jimmy Jazz's post I remember a time where they brought this trailer to our school that had a dining room-like setup on a shaker.  The room had a table and chairs, ceiling light fixtures, some cabinets on the wall - all that typical sort of stuff - and one side was open for everyone to watch. So they would have a few kids get in and sit in chairs around the table and start shaking the shit out of it.  You would get to experience the feeling and react the way you were trained.  Amusement park ride, indeed.

  8. Holy fuck - I spent several years growing up in Japan, and earthquake awareness and preparation was such a huge thing.  I have known about the Great Kanto earthquake 100 years ago nearly all my life.  Well, this morning as I went to refresh my memory on a few specifics of that disaster I learned about the Kanto Massacre for the first time.  Damn people can be terrible.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kantō_Massacre

History diversion aside, hoping for as little damage and death as possible today.
