    Texas is not back

One of the teams expected to generate plenty of preseason buzz is Texas. But not from FPI.

The hype that the Longhorns have finally produced is, in our model's estimation, overstated. Tom Herman's team checks in at No. 26 in our rankings, just missing the cut for our accompanying table (you can find them in the full rankings at the end of this post).

Though Texas took strides last season, it had the benefit of starting 13 seniors and graduate students. Even with a cumulative top-five recruiting rank over the past four seasons, the fact that Texas is returning just eight starters is very likely to be a problem.

As a result, FPI believes Texas is not one of the top 25 teams in college football and will more closely resemble Iowa State or Baylor than Oklahoma in 2019.

    FPI is stupid.

  2. We may be underdogs, but at least they're all expected to be good games - I just saw that in ESPN's "ranking of bowls by entertaintainment value", 5 of the top 10 include a Big 12 team.  I expect there will be a couple upsets.

    1. Oklahoma vs Alabama

    5. Texas vs Georgia

    6. West Virgina vs Syracuse

    8. Iowa State vs Washington State

    9. Missouri vs Oklahoma State

Tyrone Swoopes flew from Whitewright, Texas, to Seattle to join the Seahawks on Monday, then boarded a flight with the team to London on Wednesday. On Sunday, he claimed his first career catch in his first career start.

The last thing Riley wanted to do was give up 48 points to a Texas offense that isn't exactly Patrick Mahomes on a hot night in Lubbock.

Guess it's gonna take a while longer to earn some respect.  Can't possibly be that we're actually starting to play better, no?

Problem is, I'm not sure we'll see another defense that is respected nationally until bowl season.

  5. I thought Beck had a pretty good game, no?

From the cheap seats, we don't really know how much of the improved OL of late is due to the arrival of Coach Hand, and how much can be attributed to the last regime's S&C program, the available personnel, etc.  Hell, the Wickline situation after Strong arrived sounded downright toxic, and those effects can last a few years.  The big uglies really need some time to develop, both physically & even just mentally to gel as a unit - the true freshman that can contribute is pretty rare (hello, Sam Cosmi!)

Things are finally coming together on what's been our weakest unit for maybe the last decade.  I vote don't rock the boat.  If Warehime isn't pulling his weight, Coach Herman (and even the players) know and can do something about it at the right time - the offseason!
