For the record, yes, a different guy, but a co-conspirator.  Wiggains is the central dude.

Apparently, he was also a defendant in that Duncan suit at one time.

There was a plot twist to this too that I'm not sure how it finally resolved, maybe one of our Surly lawyers can answer. Jeremy knew his goose was cooked. So he and his wife filed some kind of "partition" agreement and he filed for personal BK the very next day or something like that. I'm sure a plan to avoid creditors but can you do that?

The jury I sat on 3 years ago awarded something like 11 million against one person.  Dude was scamming Park Place Autos (DFW).  His scheme was amazingly dumb.  I don't recall the specifics, but it was something along the lines of buying a car as a sales manager, then reselling it for profit.  But, he wouldn't deliver the car title.  Then he'd shift funds from one bank to another to cover for older debts.

I wish I could remember how he did it.  Suffice to say, it all caught up with him at the end ala a pyramid scheme.

Was the defendant's name Jeremy Wiggains? He was a childhood friend but I lost track of him 30 years ago. He owned a used car dealership in Dallas selling "high line" stuff. Rolls, Bentley, Ferrari, etc. He got busted and house raided by the FBI about 5 years ago. Something about selling the cars twice - once to Park Place and also to his actual customer. Not sure how he ever expected to get away with it. Cash probably was tight for a couple months and he found a "creative" way to stay afloat until it finally caught up to him.

Edit: just saw the other posts so different guy. But still:

Make sure you'll get the features you want with a retrofit. I have a Liftmaster smart opener with the app and all that baked in. I don't see a way to set schedules. The feature I would like to see is a schedule that locks out remotes at 10pm or whatever. Only way to open the door is from "inside the house!" (whatup Scream) or via the app. But nope.

Update - I do have the schedule option you describe to close the door. My bad. But my remote lockout feature not available.

  5. How much impact does shingle color have on attic temps? My newish neighborhood has a bunch of dark gray roofs. If vented properly, no big deal? You don't see too many lighter color roofs even in places like Arizona so I'm guessing the delta must be fairly small.

I do it now (and put the hot water heaters on "vacation" settings) whenever I am gone for more than a weekend... I also have alarms at each of my hot water heaters and sinks that will go off if any water leaks while I'm at home - just replaced my hardwoods downstairs and don't want to replace them even if I have insurance...

Tell me more about the alarms. Make/model, etc.

  7. Half question, half advice. If the case is pretty open and shut like OP's appears to be, how much negotiating leverage does he have? Giving up 30-40% of your case to a trial lawyer seems awfully rich. If the insurance company has already accepted liability like he says, could he find a lawyer to paper the deal for 10-15% - or better yet, a flat fee?

Update: I had a session with a teaching pro to see if there might be a fix. He watched me putt for about 5 minutes and had me try to make 5 in a row from about 5'. I struggled with that after making the first couple. He noticed that at address I had the shaft leaning away from the ball, increasing the putter loft as it were. He had me address the putt, take a look at the hole, forward press the shaft and use that motion as a trigger. Instant improvement. We played around with a putter that has adjustable grip weights and settled on adding 75 grams to the shaft. 5 in a row was much easier with the press and counter balanced putter. Big improvement. With more weight between my hands it is much easier to have a smooth takeaway and putter strike. I played in a senior tourney today and shot 80, took 5th in my age group and cashed 2/3 of my entry. Its still not feeling completely natural but Im getting my head wrapped around it. Thanks for all the replies.

Very cool. Who was your pro you saw for putting?

  9. Now a serious reply. Get a metronome app for your phone. 75 BPM is a good starting point, but adjust to what feels good. I like 72. Take away on one tick and make contact on the next, regardless of length of putt. Practice for an hour, then take away the metronome and practice another hour, but try to "hear" the ticks in your mind. Focusing on the ticks will take away the yips. Good luck and report back.

  10. Update. Used Quotacy.com and it was a good experience. Policygenius also good but not quite as personal. Quotacy gave me a dedicated rep and Policygenius didn't so I'd recommend them for that reason alone really. Everything else was easy. Ethos had weird carriers with low coverages unsuitable for Surly 1%. Lemonade flat out denied me.

  11. My old house was built in the 60's and when the plasma era arrived there was no place to put a TV other than above the fireplace. I was concerned about this same issue. Built a big ass fire and put a thermometer where the TV would eventually be to test and I don't think it raised by even one degree. Total non-issue. But if you're concerned then run the same test.

To the "poor placement" folks they aren't necessarily wrong but sometimes it is the only option. At the minimum, get a mount that will tilt the TV down a few degrees for viewing. It never bothered my neck in the years we owned the house.

A friend got a quote for $120K from Andersen which seems absurd to me. He has a lot of windows and I think it came out to about $3K each. They offered to knock it down to $90K if he signed the contract that day.

I invited Renewal by Andersen of Austin to my old house to quote replacements. It's been years and I forget the quote but it seemed outrageous. Told the dude I'd think about which pissed him off and he immediately launched into high pressure sales mode. Offered a discount if I signed right there on the spot, to which I replied that I don't do business that way. He then proceeded to tell me that they didn't even really need my business and wouldn't honor the discount even if I did call him back because there really isn't anything to think about. Told him to get fucked and swore I'd tell everyone I know that their sales practices are fucked up and to never do business with Renewal by Andersen of Austin. So there you go. Fuck Renewal by Andersen of Austin.

I would have never guessed that particular Bodacious was anything special.  I’ll go by there next week.

The dude that put the Mobberly Bodacious back on the map was hitting the sauce pretty hard and finally it caught up to him. He had groomed a successor for the joint but basically ghosted on him and his family. He now works for Franklin in Austin after rehab stints. Texas Monthly wrote a piece on it recently - too lazy to find the link tho.
