It was an issue last cycle too, until the staff pulled a rabbit out of their ass late. Likely going to have to do the same this year.

No doubt it won't be easy but finding out 7 months earlier is without question an advantage.

Well, I did say replace Warehime and Mehringer. The only reason I'd be OK with Beck staying on as a position coach is that he has good recruiting connections in Dallas (and Arizona, apparently), and he can't be worse than Mehringer at the whole coaching thing.

I think you meant to say Meekins to WR; he was TEs last year.

You're right about Meekins, my mistake.

But for Beck why shouldn't we have higher expectations and standards? They guy can recruit but it wouldn't change the fact that we still wouldn't have a WR coach that recruits would want to play for.

Another schools recruiting pitch from their WR coach: "Come play for me at ___. You've seen how I've coach up similar players and I think I can get you to the draft."

Mehringer: "I know my WR choices were strange last year, that one of our best young players in the position transferred partially because he didn't like me, and that I lack experience but give us a chance, we're Texas!"

Beck: "I know I was fired from OSU, ran a horrible offense two years in a row at 2 different schools, and now I've been moved to a coaching position that I have virtually no experience at but give me a chance!"

Or, find someone else who can recruit and coach at the position.

My ideal rearrangement of coaches after last offseason was Beck to WRs, Warehime and Mehringer replaced, new OC/QBs coach, and a 10th assistant to assist with DL recruiting. We got one-half to two-thirds out of 4.

I think this would be a good fix but it is a little ridiculous that for a school like Texas, with all of its endless resources, that the best we can do is rearrange. Say what we want about Jimbo but he hired a true position coach that can recruit for each hire. We need and can afford a real WR coach who can both coach and recruit, ala Herb Hand replacing Warehime. Meekins to TE's is one thing but at a certain point Tom just needs to sack up and trim the fat even if he's friends with them.

If Leal has committed, it seams odd that Wisdom, who is visiting Austin for the spring game Saturday, is retweeting this.

Maybe Wednesday's rumoured announcement is just a narrowing of the schools still in it. Like down to 2... Good guys and fake army.

He has no stock in it either way without an offer from either school. No reason for him not to support his friend

  5. The whole Jimbo promising a starting spot thing is a bit much but the rest of his pitch and momentum isn't all that hard to understand.

We were able to clear the fucking board and load up on recruits with Charlie who could not get a win to literally save his job. This year (like us last year) Jimbo is selling the dream and the future all while having a horrible depth chart. It's an easy pitch. I do believe there's at least a bit of su$pect play involved but probably no more than most schools. He also hired a staff that is made up of better recruiters than coaches. It is paying off for him in the short term.

I wonder how the current aggy players feel about having their spots guaranteed to high school juniors.

Very likely they don't know. Only a few years ago that Kyle Allen and Kyler Murray were both promised they'd start in the same year. Can't imagine either knew of the promise to the other or they wouldn't have reacted so strongly.
