Didn’t realize they were draft eligible sophomores. I don’t follow that closely enough anymore.

I think it depends on their age or birthday….something like that

If they turn 21 before the draft they are eligible

So we're gonna park Pierce at USCe, like we did Shaka at Marquette?

If we let go of Pierce and he has any desire left to coach, Rice would be pretty stupid not to hire him. Their baseball program has been left to wilt and rot

He was hired in 2019 at Oregon St.  During the fucking pandemic.  I don't consider that being born on 3rd base.  Since 2022 his record there is 131-52.  He has also managed three different professional Double A teams.  And the aforementioned Dan Heefner at Dallas Baptist also has a sterling resume.

He was born on 3rd base. They were the #1 national seed in 2017 and finished 3rd at Omaha, then won a national title in 2018, made a regional in 2019 and punted on Pat Bailey who was an interim. In comes Canham, you aren’t going to take over a program in a much better situation than that, about as good as it gets.

They started the COVID season 5-9. Since then he has recovered nicely but he has hardly done anything to show that he has his fingerprints all over that Oregon State program.

I don’t have a crystal ball, he may be the next Augie Garrido for all I know, Texas should have their sights set higher than Canham in my personal opinion.

EDIT: If the goal of the next coaching search is to ball on a budget, he is probably the best candidate you will find

Being the first big program to make the change gives you a leg up on the candidates. If it is done properly and not a pathetic interim AD way that was bullied by Houston BMDs  type of way it can result in very good hire.

Arkansas might be looking for a new coach too, fwiw

Yeah at the end of the day neither option is ideal and this is definitely different than Augie’s final year back in 2016 because that season ended on the final day of the regular season so we have less down time this time around.

If CDC handles it correctly I would imagine Pierce is fired as soon as CDC has a guy who has all but signed the dotted line behind closed doors

So we are going to allow him to do exit meetings with current players, some of which may not go well, start recruiting the portal/juco ranks, and do other roster management staff all with the plan of axing him in a few weeks? Doesn't seem idea.

It's why I think a decision might come down sooner than we think, even if it means the job sits open for a bit with some attractive candidates still playing.

I don’t think any option is ideal, firing your coach isn’t ideal. I personally would rather not sit with an open having position for possibly 2+ weeks but there are cons to both decisions.

    We will find out soon

Going to be an interesting few weeks. All the ideal candidates will likely be playing for the next week or two. What do you do in the meantime? Just let Pierce twist in the wind until a hire can be finalized? The portal fully opens tomorrow, and just sitting idle for several weeks doesn't seem like the best plan. But dropping the ax tomorrow without a clear path forward of filling the position soon also doesn't seem like the best plan.

You let him twist in the wind and communicate through back channels which I’m sure has already been happening.

You’ve pushed a false equivalency as a given because it suits your agenda. Based on your posts, it’s clear you don’t think much change is needed, so pretending as if Tulowitzki is a legitimate candidate makes sense from your idiotic perspective. Canham has actually, you know, been the head of a program and had success. Tulowitzki hasn’t, and they’re not close to comparable options.

So yeah, I don’t deal well with morons forming stupid opinions and then vomiting them onto threads.

I didn’t say Tulowitzki was a legitimate candidate, reading comprehension is hard. I also wouldn’t hire one with 4 years of HCing experience who was handed a program a year removed from winning a natty. I honestly even thought I made it pretty clear this time with “I’m not hiring Tulo” but I guess not

Change is needed, don’t see Canham as the guy

You’ve had your ass handed to you over and over and yet you come back for more. Just admit you’ve been completely wrong and just take the loss.

We just fucked that experiment up with basketball. Anyone that floats his name around as a replacement shouldn’t be taken seriously.

Him and Canham are both 39, Canham has 4 years as a HC at the college level and was born on 3rd base with that Oregon State program and has failed to make it to Omaha yet.

Im not hiring Tulo, but if you are considering Canham, Tulo really isn’t that far fetched
