As soon as the kiddos are off to college we're planning on doing a bunch of overlanding across the west. I have an FJ cruiser and when I'm alone or with one dog it's fine to camp in, but 2 dogs and two people are too much. I've been looking for an off road camper for a while, will probably pull the trigger in a year or two.

Taxa has some little ones that would be good for 1 person.

Rented an Opus 4 for a long weekend.  Inflatable top is a cool concept and light weight for towing, but on a cold, rainy and windy long weekend in March it kind of sucked.

I need to grab a Rolex for a gift. The AD I’ve used for a couple purchases here in ATX said you can’t even order them like I had previously…choosing face, band, etc…and a few months later it was here.

I know the “shortage” is a bit nuts and the after market is big…just curious what sources any of y’all may have used for a Rolex recently? Chrono24? Any other places I should check out? Will want new.

    TIA

If you have to have it, and you’re willing to pay for it, DavidSW and akatakuya are both online, reputable (in so far as you can have a good reputation while being part of the problem) and have supply. I’ve purchased two watches from the latter.  He’s in Houston.  Neither is shy about “surge” pricing.

  3. Headed there in April for two nights for the first time in a long time, staying at the Encore. Planning on dinner at Sinatra and either SW or Delilah. Any strong lunch recommendations in Wynn/Encore or within easy walking distance?  Bar preferences in the hotel (more quiet cocktail, less nightclub)?

you ratio is way waay too low.  to inflict the kill ratio you want with the impact you want it needs to be more than 25:1

The US lost about 58,000 KIA in Vietnam.   best estimates are 1.1 million N Viet/ cong minh, NVA deaths.

thats roughly a 19:1 ratio  and we didnt win.

Well, not sure why you wouldn’t count S. Vietnamese military casualties, putting you closer to 3:1.  Not that it’s really an apples to apples compare to begin with.

anyone got opinions on off road rv trailers?

    Opus/Taxa/Black Series?

Very interested in this topic. Rented from this guy about a year ago to try out an off-road trailer

Overall pretty good, and towable with 4Runner, but would prefer something that can sleep more than two inside. Hoping to rent an Opus 4 this spring. Black series 15 looks like the best answer, but pricey and couldn’t tow with my 4Runner.

  6. Year 5 for me.  Combined with restarting regular exercise and no eating out/delivery, it has been really effective at shedding the Fall weight gain every year. But I wouldn’t call it my favorite month.

Now I just need to figure out how to not gain 10-15 pounds between Labor Day and New Year’s.

Seriously, can some Surly lawyer explain why that sentence is in the agreement, given that the next sentences say fisher would owe nothing? What’s the point?

Also mostly not an employment lawyer, but I would bet the original draft ended with “so you owe us X million if you leave for another job because we’ll be fucked” and got negotiated down to “no hard feelings though.”

  8. Headed to the area next week for the first time in 20 years, traveling with wife and a 13 year old. Staying at a house in Marfa (sucks, got it) for a week.  Planning on two full days in the park, hitting Boquillas, Rio Grande village, lost mine, balanced rock and Santa Elena. Dinner at Starlight, the Gage, and Reata in Alpine.  We have reservations for the observatory, and are planning to spend a day doing the Guadalupe Mountains and Carlsbad.

Other suggestions?  Thought about rafting, but looks like the river is low. Would Balmorhea pool be worth it in March (highs in the upper 70s).

Dining recommendations?  Looks like several of the Marfa restaurants recommended in this thread are closed. Shopping and galleries for the wife?

Can you show a cell phone pic of your vax card or is hard copy required?

From the Chronicle (not sure if this means actual card or just a physical copy):  Fans will not be allowed to show vaccination or testing status on their phones. The fest guidelines state: "Each day, bring a printed copy of your negative COVID-19 test, vaccine card, or vaccine record." If you lost your vaccine card, the FAQ recommends getting a COVID-19 test. Results must include your name and date of the test, so at-home tests won't qualify.

Having said that riding double anywhere but a shoulder is just asking for it.   When we do it we are quick to go single when a car is back.

There are no minimum speeds. What you are really saying is: that person operating legally at a lower speed is inconveniencing me and I don't want to be inconvenienced by following the law and yielding to someone legally operating a vehicle.

I’m saying that coming around a corner to find cyclists in front of me going 25mph slower and being “quick to go to single” while I’m slamming on my brakes raises my risk of accidentally killing someone way higher than I’m comfortable with, and the “I’m not breaking the law so I don’t see why you’re bothered” response seems to be willfully missing the point.

Also that kid should be in cuffs.

We have a vrbo booked for July.  Wondering if anyone has any updates on restaurants, bars, etc.  I'll be following to see how you report back @EdTomBell

Got back a few days ago.  Everything below qualified by the fact that I’ve only been to Caribbean once before (Cayman), and this was our first air/international travel since the pandemic, so limited basis for comparison.

COVID/travel: TCI case rate is less than Austin, we’re vaccinated, and travel requires producing a negative test, so we didn’t really worry about it once there. The airports were complete fiascos and no American seems capable of wearing a mask over their nose, so the travel days sucked badly. Provo airport would have been charming but for being packed like sardines with little or no air conditioning and a flight delay. Hertz-affiliated car rental place was very shady, but don’t know if there are better options.

Safety:  We didn’t have any issues but you don’t have to go very far to see people living in tough conditions, so not shocking if theft is an issue.

Beaches and stuff to do:  We rented a villa on the other side of the island from the resorts (did the same in grand cayman and enjoyed the privacy and quiet) so I only saw grace bay beach a little bit. All the beaches we saw were gorgeous. If you want to drink on the sand and look at gorgeous blue water this is your place, but in general I would say less sea life close in to shore if you want to snorkel off the beach, etc, at least from what we saw.

Eating and Drinking:  My top four in no order would be Grace’s cottage (only higher end place we went), Turks Kebab, Omar’s Beach Hut, and Bob’s Bar. Latter two are not near the resorts, but definitely recommend if you’re nearby. Preferred Omar’s to da Conch Shack (you can also do a jet ski tour). Bob’s was closest to us and more for transplants than for tourists on the two nights we went.  Basically an outdoor dive bar in a small marina with pretty good food.  Turks Head brewery was also fun (tiny, but the owner was cool)

  12. As someone with a vrbo booked for June, definitely not excited to see that. But, it looks like it was issued in February when they were having serious covid issues. Per capita numbers right now are lower than Texas.

As an aside, anyone purchased from Takuya? He's got a few things I'm looking at and since I believe he's in Houston I would like to actually try them on before making a decision. Does he do that for locals?

I bought a watch from him a couple of years ago. No issues, and he’s got a good reputation on watch forums. At that time, he was willing to meet in Houston (I didn’t, though).

Kind of what I was thinking.  Tempted to just get a power reserve Seiko cocktail with the white dial and a baby mm and call it a day.  Nothing much interests me even at the $3-4k range unless I could find a nice aqua terra or maybe a sea master 300 (probably cost more though).  Tudor 58 would be cool, but they don't seem to be around much yet and are way marked up when they are.   That or just leave the watch stash put away for now until one of you guys have a garage sale.  I figure that PP having touched G650s dick has to drop the price down quite a bit, like used Chris Ward or Squale range.

I have a sub, otherwise that bb58 would be my next target. Prices will come down to earth in a few months, I think.

You see used 300s for under $3500 occasionally.  I don’t love the polished bracelet links, and it’s a little tall, but it’s a great watch.

I sold off a couple watches and have about $2k for my next watch.  I have an Oris 65 for my diver already and like it a lot.  I have decent field type watch with a black dial that I like and a couple smaller dress type watches (old seamaster and an oris date pointer).  I'm having hell deciding on what to buy next.  I wan't something for more of an everyday work watch.  Been considering an aqua terra, but they are a little out of the budget usually.  Also looked at Stowa, but I can't decide if they are a little boring for what I want.   $2k seems to be kind of a dead spot for good value on watches.  Maybe I just need to bump up the budget, but $2k for a watch already seems like a lot to me when I really think about it.   Any other suggestions for when you bastards are slumming it and not wearing a Daytona on one wrist and a PP on the other?

I need a shaggy "not quite poors showing pictures of my skx007, but also not dropping $5k" watch thread.

I think Sinn is the only thing in that range that warrants not just getting a seiko. At $3k, you get to Tudor and some Omegas.
