  1. He is on my list but in fairness, I probably knew him better than anyone on this board. Most posters are younger guys with some exceptions who think that the bball program started the year Penders came to UT. That's not being rude to anyone but rather just the way it is here.

Add Larry Robinson to the big man list. And possibly LaSalle Thompson.

  2. The main player I think would be at risk of being deeply unhappy is Askew.  Carr wasn’t here when he committed and that obviously will have a major impact on the number of minutes Askew will get.  The rest of the 2nd and 3rd team guys seem like they will be ok: Mitchell and Ramey will get plenty of run as the primary backups to all 5 starters, Tyson is a freshman, and Febres was already used to a lesser role (same for Benson and Cunningham).  But surely Askew would not have come here if he’d known he would be the 3rd guy off the bench and in line for

Bob Weltich would be proud! #noCheerleaders

  3. This reminds me of all the people saying Charlie would’ve been great if we just hired a competent HC to work under him.

I don’t disagree with that thought. But I would say Shaka did a lot of things right. Both coaches were over their skis with the responsibilities of big time D1 schools. Mid majors fit them better.

  4. Not defending him, but recruiting was not Shaka's issue (though he wasn't going close to a level like this). Shaka would have gotten some good transfers this offseason for sure, and we'd probably be looking at something like 4-8th in the B12, which wouldn't be awful given the loss of personnel and the year to year strength of the league. Beard just happens to be a  recruiting witch.

Shaka has very many positive attributes. Had 90% of what is needed to be very successful. Really (in my opinion), I think all that he really lacked was a solid “X’s and O’s” coach that could lead the basketball team (fundamentals, game mgmt, etc). Remember Jamie Campaglio. I think he played this role for Penders back in the day. Beard has the full package. Lookout. Good times ahead.

  5. Personally I don't think this group needs a center.  Give me all the 6-7 to 6-9 guys who can rebound, score in multiple ways, shoot 3s and defend multiple positions.  Beard has shown he can coach a team like that at a very elite level.
This lineup has plenty of size IMO for the college game.  Plus everybody can score and rebound.
    • PG - Courtney Ramey - 6'3
    • SG - Andrew Jones - 6'4
    • SF - Timmy Allen - 6'6
    • PF - Christian Bishop - 6'7
    • PF - Dylan Disu - 6'9 - C
Askew has good size as well for a college PG.  Brock Cunningham can also play G/F, defend multiple positions and rebound (and doesn't need the ball a lot).
For me, the wish list in priority is as follows:
    1. Ramey (I'm actually counting him as in the fold since he hasn't gone anywhere)
    2. Jericho Sims
    3. DeVante Jones
    4. Bryson Williams
    5. Sahvir Wheeler
    6. Jacob Young

Pls never Jacob Young. Most annoying Russell Westbrook wantabee ever. Him plus Ramey would destroy the entire offense flow.

  6. Once we get Beard/Beilein/Ivey in we will change the thread title so as to reflect the couching change. no need to mention the name of our former coach in the thread title and longer than necessary. as for now, let's look at our potential roster for next season, as of this very moment here on Saturday, March 27th. this roster will change a lot between now and our first practice, but for now this shit looks bleak:

projected 2022 scholarship players at this point:

    Courtney Ramey
    Brock Cunningham
    Kamaka Hepa
    Emarion Ellis
    David Joplin

Thats it. Andrew Jones could potentially decide to return, but i have a very tough time seeing him make the decision to join that ^^^ team for free when he could be paid to play in the G League or overseas somewhere. the man turns 24 this year, so i won't hold my breath on him returning. And who knows, maybe Royce Hamm decides to come back now that Shaka is gone. of course if a school like U of H were to go after him then that's out the window, so we'll see.
When Shaka was hired he took over a program that was seriously in fine shape, and simply needed some new energy. He then proceeded to recruit better than all but a handful of coaches nationally, while simultaneously/inexplicably running off half of his scholarship players via transfers out of his program, and sending Texas Hoops on a slow march back to the Weltlich days (in terms of program stability) with his preternatural ability to suck dick as a basketball coach. now we really do have a full-on rebuild on our hands, and the sooner  we announce our next hire the better.
Bottom line is this: The next coach will have to hit the ground running with this unprecedented transfer portal that is adding numbers by the minute. our new coach will be able to offer potentially 25-30+ minutes to anyone who he wants to bring here. how well he does bringing in that transfer talent will be paramount. if he can bring in a bunch of dudes with real experience who are ready to play, then we may only be looking at a 1-2 year turnaround. either way, Shaka made damn sure to make things as difficult as possible on his replacement. and so, to whomever that man ends up being i say:

Can someone tell Ramey he is good enough to go pro... so we don’t have to endure his dribbling and throws from ball-hoggish play!

  7. Rare credit to Shaka for today's gameplan.
I think about 45 percent of Texas's shots this year have been from BTA, yet today, less than 32 percent (18 of 57) were from downtown. The guards really seemed to make a concerted effort to work the ball into Sims, and it paid dividends.
Still too many turnovers (16) from such an experienced roster, but overall, the 'Horns demonstrated more discipline and composure than I've seen from them all season.
Also, don't be too quick to bag on AJ1 or Ramey for their poor shooting (2 of 17 collectively). Drew has carried the load at times this year and my guess is he'll do so again before all is said and done.

    Yep. Finally fed the bigs.

  8. I would like to see the below lineup on the court together.  I would prefer to keep two of Greg Brown, Kai Jones, Sims and Hamm on the court at any given time.  Let Brock essentially eat into Ramey's minutes by sliding Andrew Jones down to SG.
    • PG - Coleman
    • SG - Andrew Jones
    • SF - Brock Cunningham
    • PF - Greg Brown
    • C - Kai Jones
I have also seen enough of Greg Brown to try a big lineup where he plays some small forward.  He can certainly handle the ball. Something like this:
    • PG - Coleman
    • SG - Andrew Jones
    • SF - Greg Brown
    • PF - Jericho Sims
    • C - Kai Jones

    Sliding Ramey

  9. Davidson at 11am today (Maui Invitational). Anyone know what to expect from them?

Hopefully they will push the tempo and try to drive offense with the transition off missed shots. Likely, we will have the guards doing a lot of shooting with very limited offensive sets that involve the bigs getting a touch in the paint ... they look like a very skinny and slow team

  10. true, but when you add the fact that Kendal Yancy and and Demarcus Holland couldn't get a look either (with Holland coming off a Big XII All-Defense Team season/being the unquestioned team leader), while a guy like Tevin Mack (one of Shaka's guys) got chance after chance (even when he was just plain bad), to me it seems clear that Shaka had zero interest in giving anyone who wasn't one of "his guys" a fair shake. that's how i see it.
edit: this trait is not unique to Shaka. in fact it's pretty much SOP. but it is what it is. he's misused his rosters in a litany of other ways, and while this one might be common, it still happened, and it still sucks to guys never get a shot and then go somewhere else and shine.

What is the difference between Chikfila and every other fast food. Good management and coaching. These players get coached up... then they shine. Coaching matters!

  11. yep, gonna cost us games again...I know it was happening with Rick too at the end but its why I can't see Shaka doing anything.  just being athletic and playing good D doesn't get you anywhere these days.  you have to be able to shoot.

The bigger challenge is they don’t have an offensive set. No inside out game. Can you recall any plays last night that was designed to get the bigs the ball?

With a team like Rio Grande, we should be feeding the bigs... not sure what size their tallest player. Unfortunately, guards have too much dribble and one on one play to score the points. Strategy is not sustainable or consistent in Big12 play.

That said, team has tremendous upside.
