Seriously... There were moments last night I thought I was watching the NBA.

Every one of our basketball teams in the past had some flaw to work around or some scheme that emphasized one thing (Penders' offense, Barnes' defense, Smart's ego) over another (Penders' defense, Barnes' offense, Smart's overall quality of play). And that's what I've seen from most of our opponents, too.

This team busted its ass for every one of the forty minutes of play. It scored with three pointers and by charging the paint. The defense was ferocious. Athleticism was fast, powerful, and unrelenting. I saw no flaws. I saw the Harlem Globetrotters having fun with the Washington Generals.

    What the hell, man.

Who WAS that basketball team wearing burnt orange?

When we came-out in the second half like a shark sensing blood in the water, I knew things were different.

It seems that every DC here seems to want to force their schemes whether complicated or not on our players.  It seems that our best defenses generally stem from really simplifying and dumbing down the concepts and letting them just be athletes.  This defense still has blue chip athletes at every spot.  When things get tough, I really don't understand why we don't just go to 4-2-5- or 4-3-4 and put your best 11 out there.  Keep it simple and let them attack the ball.  This method may not make us look like UGA or BAMA, but I'm sure it will help us avoid letting Kansas punk us at home and drop 50 on us with walk-ons.  The only ones that really did this were Muschamp, Greg Robinson, and Chris Ash.  Not keeping Ash was probably a very stupid move from a continuity stand point and seeing improvement during his year here.  I would much rather have Ash and Hutzler over PK and Choate.

putting our best 11 out there might require us to run a 3-1-7.

One of the interesting things about Flores is his cultural background. He is the child of Garifuna immigrants from Central America. Their history is fascinating -- way back around 1720 their ancestors survived the wreck of their Spanish slave ship on St. Vincent, killed the Spanish crew, and headed for the hills, where they intermarried with the Carib and Arawak peoples. The Brits steamed in to St Vincent about 20 years later and the Garifuna fought them to a standstill -- they were the first native peoples to force a colonizing power to sign a treaty....Which neither side stuck to, and around 1800 the Brits exiled most of the Garifuna to the shores of Belize, and today they live there and down into Hounduras and Nicaragua. Their native language is a composite of Arawak / Carib, Spanish and English. Most of them share Flores's dark skin tone but genetically they are very native too. Their music is very African-sounding....

In Central America they've played a role something like the Kurds -- a stateless people alternately attacked or used as mercenaries in that region's many wars. (Except in Belize.) New York has the largest colony but there is a substantial one in Houston as well; here, they first came as stowaways via the Ship Channel and settled in the nearby Fifth Ward. A Fifth Ward friend of mine told me they stand out for preferring soccer over basketball; cigars and rum over Newports and beer; and reggaeton over hip hop and R&B.

In more recent years a more middle class contingent of Garifina as arrived in America including a HS buddy of mine who is also a Texas Ex. He came to America at about eight but he keeps his culture alive with his cooking, music (jamming out in his garage with those African sounding drums with friends and family), and frequent trips home. He doesn't speak Garifuna, as his parents were city folk when they came to Houston, but in Belize most of them speak English as either their first or second language. Back in HS we knew he was from Belize but he didn't really talk at all about being Garifuna. That came after we grew up.

About a year ago we had lunch from this food truck in Houston and he told me about all this stuff. I knew only their music:

Sazón Garifuna - Brays Oaks Management District

Point is Flores was raised with a different mindset. He as spoken out against police violence / trigger happiness: "I've lived this," he said, recalling that he'd personally had NYPD cops point weapons at him based on nothing more than suspicion. In the aftermath of George Floyd's murder, he released this statement:

Frankly given that sort of outspokenness I am surprised an organization like the Texans ever considered him at all.

OK - this was fascinating.  Thanks for this.

  4. It's a good trade for Vegas. Nevermind the fact that their entire first line of Pachioretty-Eichel-Stone is LTIR.  Some thought that after the Olympic break, they could be together.

Creates cap issues for both clubs, for different reasons obviously.

  5. Eichel deal announced this morning. Knights sending Buffalo Tuch and picks.  Were rumors the Flames were offering Tkachuk and Monahan plus picks.  Curious if that was real and the Sabres preferred Tuch. Contract status is more favorable I guess.

    Caps 5-1 over NYR.

Ovie .. 2 goals, 2 assists, passes Marcel Dionne with 732 goals.

None of the anticipated fireworks between Wilson and Reaves.

Rangers are a mess on the back end.

So are the Hawks.  18 shots in the first by the Avs.  Without MacKinnon.

A reminder that this year you can watch every out of market NHL game with an ESPN+ subscription. That's the best deal in sports especially with college basketball just around the corner.

I have a Sens vs Coyotes final like everyone expects.

Finally signed-up for ESPN+ because of the NHL deal.

    Wow. Sens over the Sabres?

  8. Puck drops tonight boys.  Time to talk puck.

Two interesting games tonight.  Lightning banner night against the Pens (sans Crosby and Guentzel).  And, the last two in - Knights v. Kracken.

Who are in your Cup Finals?  Who wins the Hart, Vezina and Calder?
