I can promise you there will be some vile shit said about Beard on this very board if he has the same level of success here that he did at Tech, and then bolts to a blue blood. Its what all fan bases do, don't kid yourself that our fans would act any different. The only reason we were so civil regarding Shaka is everyone wanted his ass out of here, and he did us a solid.

    thank you.gif

yea but I was told that Mark Adams was the brains behind the operation and Beard just sat in the corner picking his boogers?!?!?

Beard oversaw the entire practice, but Mark Adams ran all of the defensive portion including the "kill drill." This is what made the defense elite over the last 4 seasons. Most of the stuff from Tech fans is sour grapes towards Beard, but the defense 100% belonged to Adams. Beard was responsible for the motion offense, culture, recruiting etc.

    Do they?

Why wouldn't they have a right to be angry or upset? I've already said anything beyond that is completely unacceptable when the line is crossed into threats, violence, vandalism etc... But Tech fans can be angry or upset, that's perfectly justified. I got over it pretty quickly, but to many Tech fans this felt like a betrayal by leaving for an in state conference rival. I know the "rivalry" is viewed differently by UT (as you consider OU) your rival, but for most Tech fans UT is our biggest rival. Imagine how you would feel if Sark turned around your football program, took you to the title game, and left 2 years later to take the job at OU. You would be angry or upset.

I realize it's his alma matter and understand why he made the decision he did. It makes sense he would want to return to his school and somewhere that traditionally recruits better than Tech. However, I am looking forward to watching Beard have to come back to Lubbock every year, he will get a "warm" reception.

Tech could keep everyone Tyson, Peavy, MSS, but who's going to be the recruiters there?  Who has the AAU connections?  If Adams can't bring in some dudes, all the coaching in the world won't make a difference.  At first glance, it looks like Hocutt took the option of putting it in neutral and coasting on the momentum Beard built.  Your program could recede to pre-Tubby levels in two years.

We are bringing back Brian Burg (excellent recruiter) and are putting together a nice staff. There are also reports that Jason Sasser (former player and current head coach at Red Oak HS) will be joining the staff as a recruiting specialist. I think Tech will be fine. Will we recruit like UT? No. UT should have top 10 classes every year moving forward with Beard and the staff he has assembled. Can we recruit enough to keep the program at it's current level? Absolutely.

The big 12 moving forward is going to continue to be the best conference in the country. KU, Baylor, Texas, Tech, WVU, OU and OK ST should all continue to be great programs that expect to make the tournament on a yearly basis. It's a loaded league that is a dogfight every night (except when you get to play KSU, ISU or TCU)

Did Tech fans think Beard was going to be a lifer there? That thought never occurred to me.

I don't think most Tech fans thought he would be a lifer but felt like there were very few jobs he would have left for. I'm of the opinion that there were 5 situations in which he would have left. Texas, Kentucky, North Carolina, Duke or the NBA. I do not think KU was an option for him, only UT within the big 12. I was a little upset at first, naturally, but I always expected Texas being his alma matter could hire him and can't fault him for going to his school. Congrats, you got a great coach.

What Beard is really good at is building culture and recruiting. He is excellent in both of those areas, what will be interesting to see is how he does without Adams running the defense. I do think he will still be successful, even if it's only because he should have outstanding talent in Austin, but I think he is a decent X and Os coach as well.

Man, I'm ready for some of those tech transfers to hurry tf up.

Yesterday morning, I would've said Texas was going to get a majority of the team. Now with the Adams hire, I don't think yall get anyone except Peavy or Santos Silva.  Edwards and McCullars have both announced they are coming back. It sounds like Shannon will be returning as well and our top recruit Tyson will be honoring his commitment. Only questions at this point are Santos-Silva and McClung, if I were going to guess SS leaves but McClung comes back.

So yall might end up with 2, but I think that's about it. Tech 100% made the right decision in hiring Mark Adams.

But are yall okay with the vandalism at Beard’s Lubbock house?

Never said that I was, its pathetic if you ask me. Vandalism, physical threats against Beard or his family or actual violence is completely unacceptable. Tech fans have every right to be angry/"hate him" and can certainly give him a warm welcome every year when he comes to Lubbock, but anything else is out of bounds.

Every fanbase has some idiots. Most tech people are good and honest individuals.

Also, another thing that absolutely cannot be understated is not having to rebuild the culture that Beard built, which I think will be his greatest legacy at Tech. Adams is fully capable of carrying that forward.

100% agree. Beard was able to establish a wining culture based on mental toughness and physical play. That wont change under Adams.

You know more about this than I do, but I do wonder about this being Adams’ first P5 head coaching job at his age.

It’s definitely going to be about who he hires as assistants.

He has plenty of head coaching exp, just not at a p5 job. He won a junior college national championship at Howard College in 2010. This is a good hire for us. Keeps continuity in the program and the defense (why we win) will stay the same. Kevin McCullars is confirmed to be returning. The rumors are that Kyler Edwards and TJ Shannon are both coming back as well, and our top recruit Tyson will be honoring the commitment. If McClung comes back it's basically the entire team, which would put us in position to be competitive in the big 12/make the tournament and keep the basketball program moving in the right direction.
