This is why I don't get the first-round grades from so many, despite him not having cleaned up some very important parts of playing the QB position. The angles and release and all that is great, but that's not nearly important as being able to read a defense and get to the 2nd or 3rd read, pocket presence, timing, etc. Not to mention the deep ball, that's a huge red flag for an NFL QB.

And I feel like a lot of our fans are pushing him out the door to start the Arch train, but what if he doesn't get a first-round grade? Does he go higher than Caleb Williams (lol), Drake Maye? What about Penix from Wa. If he's looking at a 2nd or 3rd round grade why isn't he coming back next year?

If he comes back to play college, he’ll be transferring imo. He’s struggling at things that are important to Sarks system.

  2. At his best, he’s one of those most accurate short to intermediate passers you’ll find. He uses multiple arm angles and has a quick release. He is terrible at throwing deep, and is now just trying to create 50/50 balls when guys have 5-7 yards of separation. His ability to stand in a pocket and make multiple reads looked highly suspect. Texas can have a good offense with him at QB, but the oline must figure it’s shit out. They must be able to move people in the run game. They actually seemed to do that yesterday better than trying to reach people.

We relied on, and were burned by, multiple players who are no longer playing here this year. Their replacements all represent higher ceilings and, if you believe the reports, current improvements too...

First off I'll be the first to admit that prediction is an inexact and oftentimes fruitless art. If it has any utility outside of placing wagers, it is in the setting of expectations.

In terms of the players lost versus their replacements and believing practice reports, my experience is practice reports are grain of salt types of things. High ceilings are real and can be good guide, but it's difficult to predict when a player is ready to maximize. There have many players drafted as upperclassman that played as freshman and sophomores while being real liabilities on the field.

IMO.. Brooks never looked amazing, which I'd call an elite college FB player. I would say he flashed upper tier ability at times and looked stickier in coverage than Jamison. It does appear that Texas has 4 corners who can give starter level reps, which should be a boost to the secondary. Catalon also offers the potential for a big upgrade at safety, pending health and whatnot.

The Edge position's most concerning element is the weakside. Ovie was horrific at pass rush, but turned into a reasonable edge setter. That's the biggest concern with Burke or whoever plays that position. Replacing DMO with Gbenda is also a potentially big drop off, even with DMO not playing great tactically at times.

Agreed on WR and TE, nothing really to fret about there.

Assuming the oline becomes good with one more year of development is a big stretch imo. Connor and Majors were two of the worse run blockers in the conference last year. Is it possible they improve, sure. Should we expect it, imo not sure. Even if they improve, how much? Is Campbell at RG the upgrade we expect as a true sophomore? The unit overall was pretty good at pass blocking, which is Majors strength at center. The tackles make this a bit easier to manage. Biggest area of concern is run blocking, which many have hit on here.

Good bet Ewer's improves, especially given the targets he has and an elite left tackle. Does he become a good college QB or elite? Based on what I saw last season, I believe good is more likely.

IMO... the rosy outlook of we've improved every area is a little too rosy. This team should have a really good passing offense, but will the running game be good enough for the offense to function against good defenses? The passing defense might improve, but can Texas actually sack the qb and produce turnovers? Can they get off the field on 3rd and 4th down? Will the run defense hold up, with the weakside edge being potentially weaker? The point is this team has unknowns, so do all the other teams in the conference. They don't have enough knowns for me to feel as confident as most of the fanbase appears to feel.

A healthy Quinn is a helluva QB.
Our IOL will be better - not sure how much - by virtue of experience, another year of S&C and another year with Flood.
RBs and WRs are deep and talented.
Quinn needs to remain healthy.  JT Sanders needs to remain healthy.  Catalon needs to remain healthy.
EDGE will be better, again, not sure how much.
We need AntHill to ramp up quickly and Gbenda not to suck.
Sark will be better - another year of living sober and experience, adding more quality coaches.

Looking at all that, I don't know if I see an undefeated team, but I think the only way we don't win 10+ games is if we are unlucky with injuries and Big 12 zebras.

This team has some good knowns, but more than a few unknowns. Assuming the unknowns work out well is why I’ve overestimated the performance for over a decade.

Mitchell’s one of the best red zone threats in the country, and we should be able to get a lot of push in the run game behind Campbell and Jones, assuming Campbell wins the RG spot.

Very good point, having your best two run blockers next to each other is often enough. That’s why I think Campbell will win the job. Also Sanders should be a red zone weapon.

  6. Remember CTJ posting a couple of months ago to forget about Simmons. He was infatuated with LSU. Then Texas disrupted things with an amazing push. LSU just spent the weekend matching that push. I’m leaning to CTJ’s original thoughts on this one. As long as LSU convinced him that they can match it all. Just like when CTJ laid out why Gipson to Clemson made the most sense.

There's a lot to unpack there. I'm spoilering my response to spare the rest of the board the bloviation:

      Reveal hidden contents

As it pertains to Bama people and their views on Sarkisian at Texas plus his time with them, they were mostly positive about him. I can tell you that when I first heard that Sarkisian might be legitimately a target, I called one of them during the holidays and they were outright dismissive of the premise for the same reasons I was. Turns out we were all wrong and they were around the guy every day. In another vein, Applewhite told people right up until the day before the announcement that there was no fucking way as well, and he's buddies with Sarkisian and knows the Texas machine well.

In any event, they all said Seven Loss Steve was terrific as a planner and playcaller and a great guy. They felt like he could recruit and he could evaluate. They also did not think he was HC material for numerous reasons, some of which are obvious and best not discussed here. The other biggest issue is that they didn't view him as a killer.

People around the sport love Sarkisian. He's buddies with a bunch of the analysts and they all speak the same language. If Sarklossian doesn't get it done at Texas, you can 100% guarantee that he will not be blamed by anyone in the media. The narrative will continue that Texas is a broken program and our admins and boosters are evil Machiavellian types warring with Sarkisian and each other and short-tempered with no vision or patience. The only thing that could stop that would be the equivalent of the guy being visibly drunk during a game like he was at USC.

Speak to people that cover the sport in different ways though, and they'll tell you that he's soft and he's not a closer. Again, "not a killer".

But what do I think are his problems?

I definitely think he's softer than the archetypical winning Head Ball Coach. I think he adjusts for shit in games. He's got too favorable of a view of west coast talent. He's weak with his coaching and analyst personnel when it comes to cutting dead weight.

He has no track record of success other than when coaching under football legends. He turned around UW quickly, but that was a testament to competence, not excellence. He never looked like he was going to take UW to the national title-competitive level, which coaches were able to do before and after him at UW. He failed spectacularly at USC. He did jack shit at Atlanta and was summarily fired after a 2 year stint in which the offense got worse from the offense he inherited and then worse again in his second year. He went 5-7 here last year and lost to fucking Kansas at home.

So I don't blame anyone for being hopeful for the guy, or liking him. I disagree with anyone who claims that the guy is some sort of proven success or that he currently merits any benefit of the doubt as the HC at Texas. I also vehemently disagree with anyone who wants to defend the hire in the first place and have told someone near the guy and CDC that and then mocked him for attempting to matter-of-factly state that "we all know he was the best choice at the time". Uh, no, "we all" didn't. I thought he was a terrible reach of a rebound hire after the UM spurning, said as much on this site and elsewhere, and have seen nothing to indicate a need to change that thinking so far.

    Appreciate that thorough response.

I hope Sarklossian takes Texas to multiple college football titles and builds his own dynasty. You dipshits can gratify yourselves over telling me how wrong I was and that you’re undying support for our coaching genius was there the whole time. I’ll laugh right along with you.

I'll prefix my question with the acknowledgement that you've proven your sourcing and it seems readily apparent that you are the holder of opinions that merit consideration. Now let me remove myself from the inner sanctuary of your anus and ask about the nature of Sark's incompetence. Knowing of your connection to the Bama folks, I'd imagine your opinion has been shaped by those discussions and Texas considerable underperformance last year. Sark's track record as a head coach suggests he's missing some key ingredients. I do think he had reasonable success at Washington, which is the meat of his head man experience. I'm looking for some clarity on the nature of his failings, beyond his addiction demons. Listening to him talk, he doesn't come across as dumb, naive, or arrogant which are the typical hallmarks of incompetence. His coaching hires within the context of Strong and Herman's hiring practices suggest football intelligence. His offensive system/play calling is in the upper tier of the college fb world. So my question divorced of my editorializing is can you offer some insight into the nature of Sark's incompetence as a Head coach? Do you view him as incompetent even as an OC?

I got heat after the playoffs saying Vasek was better. I still think he is a much better athlete. We shall see

I haven't watched him beyond just highlights, but Vasek seemed like a dude that moves forward really fast. I didn't see much evidence of bend or lateral agility. I thought Burke's lateral agility and bend is better than Vasek, and I pretty much always value that more.
