  1. I have not seen Penix run on designed plays up the middle in the 2 years he's been at UW.  Did Dillon Gabriel have success doing those against you?  Our coaches must have seen something.

A common misconception about UW is that they are a fast-paced air raid offense.  They actually like to possess the ball.  They run up to the line quick, but only to see how the defense lines up.  They snap the ball at 0 time on the clock a lot.  We held Oregon to 2 minutes time of possession in the 1st quarter, but our running game was working.  We had to run Penix in the 3rd quarter against you because we couldn't run traditionally.  But we can eat up clock with dink and dunk too.

That's exactly what I said during the game to my wife.   I listen to Sirius XM and read a bunch of the national articles during the CFB season.  People tended to forget that THE hot topic those first few games of the season is whether UW was the best team in the country and whether anyone could stop that offense.  That was the version of the UW offense we saw. Not whatever version struggled in the middle of the season after the first Oregon game.  I was sitting there thinking as hot as Penix was they should have thrown it every single play regardless of down and distance.  As a neutral observer, I truly hope Penix stays that hot again next Monday so we see how that elite QB and WR play does against Michigan's (admittedly much better) D.

IMO, I think the pass defense stats on both teams were misleading.  UW's pass defense ranking was highly skewed due to the high flying Pac 12 offenses and future NFL QB's they played.  And UW's formula is to get up early in the game and then hold on for dear life at the end of games (giving up a lot of passing yards).

And Texas sure seemed really good in coverage in this game.  Only 1 time did I see a UW receiver completely burn a CB.  And that was a smart intentional PI on your CB that play.  All other completed passes were basically perfectly placed balls.  Your CB's looked like they covered our receivers very well, compared to other opponents that I've seen.

What are you talking about!? You really don’t know college football if you want to give up a coach who has gone 24-2 in two years for a 73 year old coach who hasn’t coached in college since he was in his late 50s.

Your other posts are absurdly glass half empty and full of pandering to these UT fans who don’t know better. I get strong bandwagon Seahawks fan vibes from you. Sounds like you are now hopping on the Husky bandwagon after you probably thought they would lose all year and not make the CFP. Please stop embarrassing yourself and UW. And please don’t come to NOLA, but given your confidence, I don’t think you will be there.

Selfishly, I want Deboer to be a Husky for life.  But I can't help but think he's a rocket ship to reaching uncharted territory in terms of head coaching accomplishments.  Show me another guy that matches his track record at every level.  If he wants to take it to the highest level, I want to see that too honestly.

Call me whatever you want if that's what makes you feel good.

I will wholeheartedly admit that seeing your comments and responses on an 'enemy' message board are borderline masterclass.  You state opinions and back it up with sound reasoning/facts, and are very succinct about it all.  Every time they tried to troll you, you had a perfect response, imo.

So I will gladly get out of your way and let you handle these guys.

yeah, not really sure what that's about but he's got something. if WA won't throw real money at him AND the program, he's gotta leave not that he would want to and not that WA has to let it happen either.

ngl, I secretly wish that Pete Carroll and Deboer switch jobs.  UW would be getting one of the greatest college coaches and recruiters ever.  And the Seahawks ... well who knows.  But the dude has killed it at every level.  Why not the NFL.

See, I can understand why you’d believe that given your team’s 7 one score wins this season. I’m not so sure about Washington’s defense being able to keep a lid on our offense

I guess my prediction is more bold than originally thought then. But yes, agree that if you guys run over our OL, then it will get pretty ugly in UT's favor.  I don't see our defense putting a lid on you.  We played our best defensive game of the season and still only won by 3 points and gave up 30.

Have you given a prediction yet?

My only prediction right now is that it will be close game that hinges on an untimely mistake or penalties, with no clue which way it will go.  I know that's not bold.  But it's bolder than what I had predicted for the Pac 12 CG.  I thought we were going to lose that game by more than 1 score.

But as a tortured Seattle sports fan, that game has given me some confidence that we at least have a puncher's chance in the playoff.  That's usually when the downfall happens.  Sucks to be a sports fan at times haha.

UW has the better WR corps. Sanders at TE is more of an equalizer than an edge IMHO. I like our guys for YAC because they’re quick. But Odunze is one of the best at making the play while covered and Polk is pretty damn dangerous there as well.

imo, our offenses are basically a draw.  You have an advantage at TE (e.g. 2nd best behind Bowers from what I hear) and we have a more experienced QB.

Defenses definitely your advantage, on paper.  Hence the 4.5 line in your favor.  Count in the 80/20 home field advantage and it will definitely be our biggest challenge.

  8. Just saw this breakdown on ESPN with some good insight into the Huskies team.  They say that the UW linebackers and secondary are just not at the same level as the other 3 playoff teams.

Considering that Ewers had 370 yards passing in the Alamo bowl as an inexperienced QB and a #1 receiver with the dropsies, it could very well be that the UT passing game will be the true juggernaut in this game.

I think the question of whom to double cover is situational, but I think most situations demand doubling Worthy. The one exception is maybe money downs, but generally, you double Worthy because he will score if you don’t. You can usually tackle Mitchell unless he’s already in the end zone. You’re not catching Worthy in the open field.

Makes sense.  What doesn't make sense are the draft evaluations.  Odunze is ranked as high as a top 10 pick, mainly because he will supposedly test (4.3 speed) really well at the combine.  But I can't think of one instance where he makes people look like they're running in sand like Worthy does.

Worthy seems to have that Tyreek play speed in highlights.  Seems like that should be pretty coveted in the NFL.  But I've seen Mitchell as having a higher draft grade as well.

I would argue the biggest variance in that regard UT vs UW is our break away speed and power at RB with Oline that opens gaps up the middle. I haven't seem that at any point from UW, but I admit I only watched 3 of their games.

Correct.  UW does not have breakaway speed at the RB position in the 2-deeps.  I think maybe the freshman Tybo maybe does, but he won't play much.

Thanks.  I was thinking that if it were 4th and 10 at the end of the game and all our receivers had equal amounts of separation, Penix is throwing to Odunze for sure.
And that same situation if I were a Texas fan, I think I'd want Ewers to throw it to Mitchell.  But I've only seen a few games.  Just wondering if you guys would agree.

Worthy has proven himself a dangerous weapon this year, probably has more YAC than Mitchell, but Mitchell seems to be Quinn's go to receiver for TD's. I know this will sound pretty homerish, but it's a pick your poison type thing with our offense when it's firing on all cylinders, but I'm sure you can say the same about UW.

Not homerish at all.  Just the truth.  Honestly, the main advantage your offense has over ours is the TE.  Our TE is serviceable at catching and makes some good plays.  But he's a walk-on that played a total of 2 high school football games before walking on at UW.  Not quite the same level instilled fear that Sanders brings haha.

yeah, it's our biggest rival.  And they get all the love from the media.  But the reason for all my UO talk in this forum is because it's the only team that is reasonably comparable to UT that we've played.
Moving on from UO, if you were UW, do you think it's more important to double team Worthy or Mitchell?

My casual fan eyes think that Mitchell looks to be more important to contain.  Worthy will definitely make our team look like they're running in sand.  But something about the Mitchell highlights tell me he's just as dangerous, if not more.

You are correct, Mitchell can adjust to a poorly thrown ball and make the catch whereas X has shown that to be his weakness. But even so he's made some spectacular catches himself from time to time. Worthy will get open more often due to speed so he usually takes the double, but that leaves Mitchell and Sanders with good matchups (bad for you guys) at times.

Thanks.  I was thinking that if it were 4th and 10 at the end of the game and all our receivers had equal amounts of separation, Penix is throwing to Odunze for sure.

Texas has the #9 total offense which is hard to say underestimated.  Maybe you can say that for the husky D standing at #91 overall, but it seems like a stretch.

Sorry, I meant that that facet of the game has been greatly under-analyzed.  Did not mean to imply that UT offense is underestimated.  I think it's on par with UW's offense at minimum.  Definitely more balanced on paper.

    The same, more or less.

In both cases, the passing game is a concern, and neither has a defense that can keep us under 35 unless we turtle or turn the ball over multiple times.

We should be favored by 3 to 6 over either.

It is kind of fascinating what the vegas line would be if Oregon had won the last game.  Vegas was so in love with UO and if they beat us in that game, who would they love more: UO or Texas.  IMO, it should be a pick'em with a couple points in UT favor due to some home field advantage?  Not sure if vegas would agree in that hypothetical world though.

I know it's stupid to think about, but just kind of interesting to me.

It’s not about the patterns you hear from others, it is about evaluating the legit comparative data and reasoning from there.

The “we heard this from everyone “ argument is childish bullshit

haha thanks for your opinion on the matter Mr. High Horse.  I'd argue that there is no legit comparative data unless we played the exact same teams. Everything is just conjecture.  No need to call people childish.

  17. Yeah, has the potential to be a fantastic game and can't wait.

UO passed for 300+ yards and ran for 200+ yards in the 1st game, so our defense can be had.  Any team that does that should win.

One of my favorite things about the UW team this year is just the fear of how dangerous they are.  Teams tend to feel like they have to go for it on 4th downs to score enough.  The same is true in reverse in this game.  Both teams can be explosive.  The in-game decisions will be fascinating.

  18. I'm in general agreement that if 1 team wins comfortably, it's much more likely to be UT.

Thanks for the responses to my question.  It's just that we fans hear the same line before every big game.  UW is finesse and will get bullied in the trenches.  Yet somehow after the games we always hear "UW strength on the lines was very surprising".  At some point it has not be not surprising anymore.

I think that characterizing the Texas D line as simple brute strength is a pretty drastic oversimplification of how they get pressure. I would be thrilled if Washington tried to out scheme and force a running game on this D line as it will take the ball out of the hands of the guys you have who can actually do damage and tilt the game.

True.  I am no X's and O's expert so I'm only making observations at a casual fan level.  Maybe our running scheme will play into your advantage.  I really have no idea.

Like I said earlier, I'm thinking this will be a close game that hinges on an untimely mistake or penalty or two.  No idea who will win, but that's why we look forward to this game.

Another thing that gives me some hope is that imo, Dillon Johnson is a way more capable running back than Tualapapa was last year.
