  1. Sadly, some places closed during the O&G downturn (Danton's, Baba Yega, Michaelangelo's, Canopy), and now even more have closed down during covid (Downhouse, Emmaline), but here are some that come to mind (keep in mind I haven't been brunching as much the last few years, which is why I asked for some recs earlier in the thread)
Breakfast Klub (no reservations, long line outside)
    Harry's
    The Dunleavy
    Common Bond
    Backstreet Cafe
    Ouisie's Table
    Cadillac Bar and Grill
    Hobbit Cafe
    Brasserie 19
    Guadalapana
    Max's Wine Dive
    Hay Merchant
    Blacksmith
    Empire Cafe
    Brasil
    Vibrant
    Hugo's
    Cyclone Anaya's (for bottomless mimosas)
    a'Bouzy
    Snooze
    Federal Grill
    Liberty Kitchen
    Weights and Measures
    UB Preserve
    Present Company
In/near downtown, the three places I recommended should be good. If you want to venture a little farther out, let me know what you're looking for and I can help narrow the list

Danton’s is still around. Moved location and is now Eugene’s.

    I'm dumb and need advice

So I got the FHS on 2/9 and my second dose 28 days for moderna is 3/9 (tuesday)

I just got a email to register and book second shot, but when I look to book it only has first shot available on Saturday/Sunday

    Should I

    1) book the appointment for Saturday/Sunday - they probably didn't differentiate first and second on booking page and they mean for me to book this slot, it's basically 28 days

    2) wait till next week and hope a book second dose appointment slot opens up on website

(note: they sent a separate email before register email saying 1st shots will be scheduled for Monday/Tuesday and 2nd shots for Thursday/Friday, and you will receive a register email the week of your 28 days)

    I'm so confused.

I would wait until next week.  You can get the second dose anywhere between 28 and 42 days after the first dose.

Didn't say that, for all I care they can keep having corrupt idiots run that place further into shit. I avoid it as best I can. Just pointing out his opposition is a fucking crook.

You lunatics in Houston deserve what you get

Houston is awesome. The only lunatics are the folks buying the firefighters bullshit.

Lol wut? Should they fire police or other city employees to pay for the firefighters massive pay raise? The police have collectively bargained with the City for years. The firefighters used to do that but they went for the big payday. They got it and now they’re seeing the other side of the coin. If I was Turner I’d make them work regular shifts like the police - no more working three days a week and going to your other job with the four days off.

This is what needs to happen.

They are butt-hurt because they cut benefits to the firefighters from their self-funded pension to sustain the other two pensions that were bankrupt because the City, the Cops, and the Municipal employees didn't fund them themselves properly.  It's called theft if its not done by a legislative act.

The referendum spinning by the City is a complete and total joke.  And like you I absolutely hate how the HFD operates.

Their pension is based on wonky numbers from an actuary that the City had to sue because their forecast was so off. Mario Gallegos, who started out with HFD, became a state senator and got them a sweet deal many years ago in Austin.

I spent a little time with a crew at a firehouse after Harvey, and they were quick to point out all the shit that is wrong/broken on their outdated equipment.  Trucks leaking, jerry-rigged, etc.  And how the entirety of HFD had, iirc, one boat for water rescues.  Mind bottling

HFD is excellent at whining, bitching and moaning about everything. When they got new computer equipment for ambulance runs, they bitched about liking the old stuff better and not wanting to learn the new software. You can’t win with them.

Wow.  The Houston stories claim that HFD captains earn 64k.  I would assume that the Austin firefighter earning 70k after 3 years isn’t a captain yet.

The pay numbers only tell a part of the story. You need to add in the pension numbers for each of the fire departments as well. That is where HFD makes their money. Their big selling point to new recruits is that if they work with HFD for 15 years, they will have $1M minimum in pension benefits. Because of state law which controls the governance of pensions, the pension boards do not have to provide much, if any, transparency as to what they are doing and only have to present the municipality with a bill each year to fund their pension.

HFD makes big bucks off their pension. The City finally made some changes to all 3 pensions (police, fire and muni worker) last legislative session. HFD is butt hurt because they finally had to make cuts to their benefits (cuts the other 2 pensions had agreed to make in years prior), and now we have this referendum, which makes no sense and if it passes, will result in less city services because the City will have to either lay off firefighters or cut down on fire equipment.

Well, when you can get overtime pay for going to traffic court and during the time you’re supposed to be in court you’re working a side security job for $50 per hour, it adds up.

That’s my experience with what HPD did when I was a volunteer traffic court prosecutor as a baby lawyer.

The City cut down on HPD overtime the past 6 years, specifically with the ticket writing folks. Currently, they are writing a lot less Class C violations (trafffic tickets) than in the past. So much so, that it has the traffic ticket lawyers looking for other work.

Shouldn't the question be whether Houston firefighters are being paid similar to firefighters in other big cities in Texas?

Only if you include what they get from their pension in the numbers. And, HFD refuses to provide transparency as to their pension.

  10. I used to work for the City in the legal department. The only department that was routinely difficult to deal with was the Fire Department. And this was for everything, not just issues dealing with their pay or pension. They don’t want to talk about anything or negotiate, they just want their way. Period. I will be voting NO on Prop B.

Saw it today and thought it was pretty great. Entertaining, funny and thought provoking throughout. The entertaining/funny throughout the film makes that very end of the film an especially hard punch in the gut but that’s the whole point.

Spot on. We saw it last night and it’s fantastic. Just ordered Stallworth’s book.
