1. I know we are talking tactical campaigns... but since being a pedantic asshole is a birthright here, I'd argue this little campaign in the spring of 1863 is kinda the gold standard for operational planning and execution:

You think that’s more impressive than sending invisible bombers over a country with severely degraded air defenses?

2. I crashed for the second time in a year. Luckily, my bike and I came out of it in relatively good shape. I was carrying some momentum coming off a hill, probably going 20-22 mph in Terry Hershey, and a fat ass rabbit ran right out in front of me. I didn’t even have time to hit the brakes before I was de-biked. My helmet is trash and I got some road rash but all else is fine.

Addendum: We all know this but you really have to wear a helmet. My head hit the ground pretty hard and I would not be in good shape if the dents in my helmet were instead in my head.

3. Bobby the Pilot, how hard is it to enter a takeoff roll with flaps retracted on a modern passenger jet?  I would think they'd engineer that to be really hard to do.

Same question when retracting flaps immediately after takeoff.  Isn't there a "yeah, might want to think twice" warning if you order flap retraction at a speed, altitude and configuration that would likely result in a stall?

4. Wow, that's insane commitment from a teen AND parent both.

"After middle school, Atwood joined the Houston-based travel program Hotshots Premier, which was nearly four hours from home. For the next four years, her parents shuttled her around for games and practices. When Atwood was in a hitting slump, she'd get in the car with her dad and go see Hotshots coach Nathan Nelson for an emergency hitting lesson. The distance never mattered.
"I'd pick her up from school at 3:30 and I'd drive almost four hours for a one-hour session," Geoff said. "She'd be doing her homework in the back of the car and we wouldn't get home until midnight. That's how committed and in love with the sport Reese was. As a parent, I was going to do everything I could to help her fulfill her dreams and support her."

That’s kind of nuts.

5. For sixty, I'll usually take one water bottle, one gatorade bottle, a banana and a granola bar.  If its really hot or I add on more 15 or 30 more miles I'll stop at a gas station and refill the bottles, sometimes with a Fanta, and grab a carb-loaded bar or candy.  I know that's underfueling but I've never bonked, and these are just weekend rides.

I ran 10 yesterday and it was a slog. It’s too hot and humid unless I get up at 5 and hit the road.

Was planning on riding this morning but was up late and I slept in. I’ll hit the bike in the morning and maybe hit the gym.

Ive noticed that after races, motivation is lacking. I should have taken a few more days off post race.

I did 60 on the bike Saturday and was getting nauseous the last 20.  I left about 7:45 and the sun was full out with a heat index of 100 when I was done.  I left at 5:15 on Monday and did the first 20 in the neighborhood with a headlight, and then hit the hike and bike trail when it got light.  There was a system coming through to the north, the weather stayed cloudy and mild and I did 75 and felt fine the whole time.

I was used to getting up way too early in years past to run before the sun came up.  I don't know why it didn't occur to me it would be the same with cycling.

Serious question though, how can anyone our age smoke a whole joint and not be completely shot for the rest of the day? One solid drag and I'm good for many hours.

Weed is too strong these days.

And what's up with the stupid electronic vapes? What happened to zigzags?

Get off my lawn.

I had the same thought.  One or two hits today is like a joint of old fashioned Mexican Ditch Weed.

8. The swim has a 50% chance of being cancelled Sunday. Does Ironman have the balls to cancel the swim on me twice in 8 months???? stay tuned

That would suck. Hope they man up and toss you all in the water. Every man for himself.
9. Are there any half IM considered "good" vs. shitty.  I live in Houston so Galveston would make the most sense.  But the prospect of an 18 mph headwind scares me.  I should also mention that I'm in a low key cold war with my wife over excessive cardio.  I can tell she doesn't exactly think 15 hours a week on a bike is reasonable, with the kids and sports and all.  At the same time, I'm not out boozing, drugging, chasing girls or golfing, so she usually leaves me alone.  I've already tried to float the idea of vacationing somewhere to run a marathon and she was not exactly a big fan.  All this to say, it's going to take some craftsmanship to (1) get a tri bike, and (2) enter a race that requires travel.  I could drive to galveston the morning of and come home after, or stay at friend's beach house.  But flying to California because the breeze is nice is probably going to be a no-go.

10. And Basil, just sign up. You know you want to.
Thanks for following and being interested. Much appreciated.

I’m going to sign up. So I can play with the cool kids.

Congrats - muscling into the wind at 16 mph for 10 miles sounds terrible. Must have been fun.
