  1. Happy to get him. I'd still like a better feel for his speed, but he sure has a nose for the ball. Could really be a factor as we start to face those bigger fronts in the SEC.

OU has kicked our ass in LB recruiting. If they were upset over losing this guy, I’m stoked he’s in the class.

  2. Roach saying nothing of value
    Spoiler

    — As Steve Wiltfong reported earlier today, Quinn Ewers is on a visit to Lubbock. The Red Raiders are sure to throw everything but the kitchen sink at the former five-star quarterback in hopes of boosting the start of the Joey McGuire area. We illustrated over the weekend the links that Texas Tech would have to him through friend and somewhat mentor Patrick Mahomes. I also wouldn't underestimate the recruiting ability of Joey McGuire. There's a reason McGuire has found success at every stop in his career, and his ability to build relationships and inspire people to follow him is the best I've ever seen. I also wouldn't underestimate the lengths Texas Tech boosters will go to setting up any NIL deals that could help them land Ewers. It's going to be an all out blitz, and we will have a better idea of what this picture looks like once the visit is over. Texas Tech brass wanted to show they had deep pockets when it came time to hire a head coach, and it wouldn't surprise me to see that extend to NIL deals in order to land a player of this magnitude.
    — I spent most of yesterday talking to just about anyone I could get in touch with about the situation. I'll say that right now, sources in the Ewers camp and at Texas have been extremely tight-lipped. Read into that what you want, but sources in Lubbock have been a bit more vocal about things. I asked a source at Tech about the rumor that they would make a move on hiring Southlake Carroll head coach Riley Dodge in order to secure Ewers and was told McGuire doesn't feel he needs to hire anyone to win a recruit over. Of the sum total of info I've received, roughly two-thirds of it has been positive for Texas. I will say that the third that would be positive for Texas Tech is extremely positive. As I outlined on Friday, this would not be a slam dunk recruitment. Ewers' father is a businessman, and they are going to make sure they are in the best position possible to play, succeed and make some money through NIL. I say all this to say, if you're writing Texas Tech off in this race, you're setting yourself up for a potential disappointment.
    — Texas Tech has more of the public buzz at the moment, and I think that's for a few reasons. For one, Quinn is already incredibly familiar with Austin and the offense of Steve Sarkisian having been recruited by him at Alabama and during the spring at Texas. Contrast that with the complete unknowns of McGuire, Texas Tech and their offensive coordinator situation which could get interesting if schools get into a bidding war for Zach Kitley who has been rumored as the top offensive coordinator candidate for the Red Raiders. Ewers will need to make sure those ducks are in a row before jumping into something. I'm sure the Texas staff is working to get in front of him and get him down to Austin at some point soon.
    — On Friday I heard from a few sources that something could go down early this week, and if it did, it would definitely favor Texas. Since circling back with those sources there's been no new info, and the Ewers camp is circling up tight. Ewers was at Saturday's Southlake-Allen game as a spectator and I was told he was surrounded by a few people to keep anyone unwanted from pestering him. The most fascinating aspect of this recruitment would be pairing what Ewers told people in the past that he worried about getting elite talent to come play with him in Austin. That was when Tom Herman was still around and the program seemed to be stuck in neutral, but most people I've spoken with feel he'd have a harder time getting that talent to follow him to Lubbock. Depending on how this decision shakes out, we will see what ended up winning out for Ewers.
    — For Texas, I know they'd like to get something done early this week and use that news to push down the stretch at signing day and land some top end talent. I've heard that Ewers has been talking to some 2022 talent including Armani Winfield and Evan Stewart. A source I spoke to yesterday told me they thought Stewart would definitely be in play for Texas again if the Longhorns landed Ewers. Stewart and Quinn both have great admiration for the other's skills. That source felt Texas could flip Stewart if Ewers chose them but Texas Tech wouldn't be able to lure the five-star receiver away. At the moment, there are some high stakes at play. There are also some potential quarterback dominoes here. Maalik Murphy is definitely watching to see who would join him, and a source I spoke with last night felt that landing Ewers could potentially hurt the pursuit of Arch Manning.

If Winfield is truly wanting back in, I think we know how this will go.
