Slow Down by Kohei Saito, Japanese wannabe Karl Marx.  He thinks we in the Global North should all feel terribly guilty for our gluttonously destructive and imperialist lives that exploit all the sufferers in the Global South; and that as a result capitalism should be dismantled and replaced with communism.  Guess he forgot to ask China.

Saito is a proponent of "degrowth", which to put it delicately, is the modern-day equivalent of Malthusianism. Even Marx supported communism because he thought it would accelerate growth, not stop it. https://www.noahpinion.blog/p/people-are-realizing-that-degrowth

Anyway, I recently picked up Lords of the Deccan at a book sale. It's a compelling and engaging history of South India, covering the 6th century to the 12th century. During this time period, South India was primarily ruled by three dynasties - the Chalukya dynasty of Badami, the Rashtrakuta dynasty of Manyakheta, and the Chola dynasty of Thanjavur - interspersed by periods of war and conflict between many smaller kingdoms.

  2. Zero Nebraska players drafted, for the second time in five years 😁

Seven straight losing seasons can take its toll, and, for the second time in five years, Nebraska football did not have a former player selected in the NFL Draft. Seven rounds passed over Thursday, Friday and Saturday without a team calling the name of a Husker. Safety Omar Brown was projected by some mock NFL Drafts to go in the 6th or 7th round, but he, like the rest of his former teammates, will have to sign NFL free agent deals.

It’s the first time since 2019  and only the second time in more than 60 years — that a Husker hasn’t been picked in the NFL Draft. In 2019, Nebraska was also coming off the first of a new coach — Scott Frost at the time.

Sure. But, the reason why the perception lasts is that OU and others gleefully repeat it, and Longhorns sorrowfully admit that our forebears fell short and share our regret. The truth is-OU may have been a little better in some areas, and worse in others, and if Texas needs to apologize to anyone it sure isn’t the Sooners.

The 1956 USC vs. Texas game made Texas a much more visible national flashpoint for integration issues.

Steve Wiltfong: Ohio State continues to set the pace with one of the nation's best wide receivers

    Quote

Ohio State’s position with Jacksonville (Fla.) Mandarin On300 receiver Jaime Ffrench looks even better following another trip to Columbus over the weekend. I previously had a 247Sports Crystal Ball submitted on March 6, and this afternoon after talking to a source with knowledge of the recruitment notched the RPM in favor of the Buckeyes on the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine (RPM).

I feel even better about the Big Ten powerhouse’s position with the 6-foot-1, 185-pound Ffrench than I did at this time a month ago. Between the player development under Brian Hartline and the offense under Ryan Day and now Chip Kelly, Ffrench sees a situation where he can meet his best potential at Ohio State. Florida State and Miami are a couple other top contenders for the Alabama decommit, but everyone trails the Buckeyes.

Ohio State currently holds On3’s No. 1 class in the 2025 cycle and Ffrench would be another major coup, ranking as the No. 4 receiver and No. 22 prospect overall in the On3 Industry Ranking. This is the second Ohio State RPM I’ve logged this week as I also really like the Buckeyes position for Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei running back Jordon Davison, the No. 6 player in the country at his position and No. 83 prospect overall. Davison, like Ffrench, was at OSU over the weekend. He’ll visit Texas this weekend so we’ll see if the Longhorns can change that pulse.

Buckeyes on a recruiting roll as April kicks off

Day and Co. have been on a heater in recent weeks, landing Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy London Merritt, Port Saint Lucie (Fla.) Vero Beach four-star linebacker Tarvos Alford, Wayne (N.J.) DePaul Catholic four-star wide receiver De’zie Jones and his high school teammate and safety DeShawn Stewart over the span of a few days last week.

“I’m big on tradition,” Alford told On3’s Chad Simmons. “It’s a college town and I want to be in a college town and get that college atmosphere. There is a lot of history at Ohio State and people leave a legacy. I feel like if you go there, you are on the verge of making history and your name will be written in the history books for college football.” They join one of the nation’s deepest recruiting classes at this stage, which also includes five-star quarterback Tavien St. Clair and five-stars cornerbacks Na’eem Offord and Devin Sanchez.

I didnt like the pick up to start with, but I have to assume the coaches saw some role for him. I dont buy the culture angle, Texas is far beyond that at this point. I am going to hope he can fill a limited role that is utilized vs power running teams and short yardage. If that isnt the case, then it is completely mystery as to why they brought him in.

Sounds like Blackshire is Dalton Santos 2.0

  6. Justin Wells: Big Recruiting Month of April for Texas Football

    Quote

There’s plenty of priority prospects heading to Austin in April. From some of the nation’s top-rated talent like Dakorien Moore, Chris Henry Jr, Zion Williams, Jordon Davison, and more, let’s go through what looks to be a busy month on the Forty Acres.

    April 4

WR Chris Henry Jr., Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei – (2026) Ohio State commit: One of the top prospects in the nation and son of former NFL WR Chris Henry, the recent Mater Dei move-in told Inside Texas he’s interested in the Horns. Henry will be in the running for nation’s top wideout in 2026.

    April 6

QB KJ Lacey, Saraland (Ala.) – #AllGasNoBrakes: Texas is holding on, but Auburn, Ole Miss, and Alabama are still in hot pursuit of the newly invited Elite 11 quarterback.

QB Troy Huhn, San Marcos (Calif.) Mission Hills – 2026: Here’s everything you need to know on Huhn. His recent trip to Michigan netted an offer from the national champs, then added an Ohio State offer.

RB Jordon Davison, RB, Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei – After stops in Ohio State and Michigan, the priority tailback will be back in Austin on Saturday for the Spring scrimmage.

RB Rickey Stewart, Tyler (Texas) Chapel Hill – Texas, Baylor, LSU, and Oklahoma State, probably in that order. He’ll trip to SMU and Baylor in late May, early June. Then Texas for his OV in mid June. Then likely a decision shortly after his officials.

OL John Mills, San Francisco (Calif.) St. Ignatius College Preparatory

    TE Nick Townsend, Spring (Dekaney)

WR Jaime Ffrench, Jacksonville (Fla.) Mandarin – He also has an official visit set Texas for June 21-23. Gotta shoot your shot, coach Chris Jackson.

WR Kelshaun Johnson, Hitchcock (Texas) – The speedy receiver was unable to compete in Austin on Thursday-Friday competing in the Texas Relays due to injury and took a trip to Lubbock instead.

WR Kaliq Lockett, Sachse (Texas) – The Horns continue to look strong here, with USC, Michigan, LSU, and Texas A&M in the hunt.

WR Dakorien Moore, Duncanville (Texas) – LSU commit – As we reported on Saturday, the nation’s top-rated wide receiver will be in Austin for Saturday’s Spring scrimmage. It’ll be the first of two Texas visits in the month of April.

DL Zion Williams, DL, Lufkin (Texas) – The big-time D-line target is headed to Austin on April 6th. This trip looms large for the priority prospect.

    DL Bryce Perry-Wright, Buford (Ga.) – 2026

DL Chace Sims, Rosenberg (Texas) Randle

DL Malik Autry, Opelika (Ala.) – Auburn commit

EDGE Smith Orogbo, Houston (Texas) Alief Hastings

LB Elijah “Bo” Barnes, Dallas (Texas) Skyline: Barnes will likely make two Spring visits to Austin.

    CB Dorian Brew, Conroe (Texas)

S Kade Phillips, Missouri City (Texas) Fort Bend Hightower

S Jonah Williams, Galveston (Texas) Ball – This recruitment has some twists and turns, but the Horns have some confidence.

    April 9

OT Michael Fasusi, Lewisville (Texas) – The five-star will return to Austin on April 9th, then be back for his OV in late June. He’ll see Georgia on Monday after a weekend unofficial to Texas A&M.

    April 11

LB Tyler Atkinson, Grayson (Ga.) – 2026

    April 13

QB Will Griffin, Tampa (Fla.) Jesuit – 2026

QB Jared Curtis, Nashville (Tenn.) Christian School – (2026) Georgia commit

OL Jackson Christian, Port Neches-Groves (Texas): He’ll be at A&M the week prior.

CB Major Preston, Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy

CB Caleb Chester, Missouri City (Texas) Fort Bend Marshall – Him and Courtland Guillory may battle for the last defensive back spot in 2025.

S Faheem Delane, Olney (Md.) Good Counsel- One of the nation’s best safeties just tripped to Ohio State, the perceived leader in his recruitment.

    April 18

Very cool from the museum! RGM is pretty badass as well.

Yeah, RGM has a location right down the road in Mount Joy, near the old Hamilton Watch Factory that closed down when Hamilton shifted operations to Switzerland.

The museum has some cool exhibits, including a large model of a watch movement for kids to play around with, an exhibit on old Japanese pocket watches (in traditional Asian watches the dial rotates as well as the hands), and an exhibit on James Bond's watches that was unfortunately undergoing renovation when we were there. They also have a large pocket watch collection, as well as a fully reproduced 19th century watch shop.

They also used to have an intricate handmade wooden clock, but some idiot destroyed it.

I know almost nothing about watches, so I need some help.  I'm looking for a replacement for this watch, which has been my go-to for out door activities / farm work the last several years.

    TimexWatch.thumb.webp.d15dd5745658b46823e91d799258c46f.webp

Of late it's been very unreliable despite a battery replacement, and I'm heading to Africa in a few months and I need something damned dependable.

I don't want to spend a fortune since the watch will be for outdoor use, travel, and it's Africa.

    What I'm looking for:

-Analog as I find that beneficial for tracking time and general sense of time

-Colors in earth tones, drab, etc - I like that look

-Need a divers bezel; I use it all the time

-I greatly prefer something that can be backlit so that my sucky old-ass eyes can see the time in the dark (e.g. Indiglo or Illuminator)

-Prefer to avoid shiny metal bezel, case, strap

-Water resistance a must for rain and slight immersion - I'm not diving with it.

I've perused Timex and Casio websites.  There's a lot of love for G-Shock in this space, but those don't seem to employ divers bezels.  I feel like I'm missing other brands, and perhaps y'all can point me in the right direction.

    TIA.

Recommend the Luminox Navy Seal. Analog quartz, black with durable Carbonox bezel and case, Tritium hands and markers so it's always illuminated, 100m of water resistance (200m on the pricier models), and unidirectional rotating diver's bezel. Comes in different variants and prices (the one below is $230 and change on Amazon). Only thing is they're usually black.

  9. Just hired away Wazzu's AD. Absolutely cold-blooded.

Pete Thamel: Washington to hire AD Pat Chun from Washington St.

    Quote

The University of Washington is finalizing a six-year deal to hire Pat Chun, the athletic director at rival Washington State, as the school's new athletic director, sources told ESPN on Tuesday. The hiring of Chun, who brings both a familiar face and strong Big Ten ties, marks a swift response to the sudden departure last week of Troy Dannen to become Nebraska's athletic director after only six months on the job at Washington.

Chun has led Washington State since January 2018, and his duties there included being selected to serve on the College Football Playoff committee and helping manage the university's future in the aftermath of mass departures from the Pac-12. His experience in the Big Ten proved appealing to the Washington brass, with the university entering the conference for the 2024-25 school year. Chun's expected hire marks the rare occasion of the hiring of a rival school's athletic director, although the extenuating circumstances of the Pac-12's recent flurry of departures make this move less jarring.

Chun worked for 15 years at Ohio State, where his responsibilities included everything from managing all facets of external relations to serving as the administrative liaison with the football program. That time gave him a window into the ways of the Big Ten, as he spent significant time in both fundraising and football, which will be two linchpins of his tenure in Seattle. His ability to lead an athletic department during financial challenges was valued, as Washington faces significant stadium debt. The school also must find ways to be competitive in the Big Ten while only receiving half of the television revenue -- along with Oregon -- of its peers through 2029-30.

Chun's time at Washington State included the successful hire of men's basketball coach Kyle Smith, who left this week for the head-coaching job at Stanford after leading the Cougars to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2008. That job is currently open. Chun also hired Kamie Ethridge as women's basketball coach, and she led WSU to the Pac-12 tournament title in 2023 and three straight NCAA tournament bids -- both firsts in school history.

Chun's tenure included promoting Jake Dickert from assistant coach to head football coach, a move that's resulted in two bowl appearances -- one as an interim -- and a 15-16 overall record that includes two wins over Wisconsin. When Chun was hired at Washington State, he became the first Asian American athletic director to lead a Power 5 school. Chun came to Washington State from Florida Atlantic, where his tenure included the hiring of Lane Kiffin as football coach.
