  1. Shaka's defenses have been ranked 14, 40, &12 (kenpom rankings) in his 3 years here. While it's reasonable to foresee some fall off on the defensive end next year, I have trouble predicting the fall off will be substantial. As has been the case under Shaka, our success (or lack there of) next year will be determined by what we do on the offensive end of the court.

Yep. This is the right answer. We can probably all just hold off posting anything else until the season starts.

I don't have a problem with building the freshmen long-term, ideally that eventually becomes the norm more like some slightly-lesser version of how Kansas does it. I guess what I'm getting at is that I would like the freshmen to earn their spot rather than some years in the past where they had no choice but to plug them in from the jump.

If we're being real here, this is a potential point of concern -- and it's not exactly a concern yet, but I'm keeping a close eye on it) -- How many from the 2018 class (if any) will get pushed out for a shiny new freshman. The teams the last couple of years have been young for myriad reasons, some on the staff, some on Barnes' washed-up pipelines, and the recruiting of 1&Ds. I'm on record that if a guy like Mo Bamba wants to come you take him 100% of the time and it's not even close, however I generally prefer the 1&D types to either be the last piece on a contender or to be a guard who can shoot. Having said that, there has been a lot of turnover in the roster. The first 2 years I'm putting more on Barnes as he left Shaka with a team full of seniors and not a lot of recruits coming in (Shaka basically kept Snoop,  and Davis to their words and brought along one guy (Tevin Mack) of his own. The second year, after 7 guys leave you're going to be filling a lot of holes, so I get the roster turnover there. However, there continues to be a lot of turnover as Shaka creates the team in his own image. Last year we knew there were likely to be 2-3 players moving on (Bamba, a then-healthy Jones) with the incoming class being as large as it is.This next class should be pretty small (3-ish), but if Shaka runs off a couple more players so he can bring the numbers of new faces to 5+ then we're likely looking at another year of this team being young in 2019-2020.
I think Shaka has a very clear idea of what he wants to do on defense and is trying to assemble enough ball-handlers/shooters long-term to make his offense run (and it's an offense that works with the right roster). Or at least that's the hope. If he runs 3 guys off from the 2018 class in search of the new shiny in 2019, I'll get increasingly concerned that he's plugging holes than building something.

So were James Banks and Jacob Young very kindly, politely and with the utmost respect asked to get the fuck out to make room for the incoming class? Or were they frustrated with their role/playing time and left on their own?

  3. - I asked for an injury update, and here is a basic rundown:

Chris Nelson (elbow) is doing well. Nelson’s scar after the surgery slowed his recovery. However, he is feeling great now.

The players Herman does not expect to be fully cleared when the team returns on May 28 are DB Montrell Estell, LB Edwin Freeman, RB Kirk Johnson, and he said OL Mikey Grandy is working on it.

    Cade Brewer?

  4. 2 hours ago, Cashcar said:

Sims developed nicely as the year went on. Texas will have good length with Sims, DO, Hepa, and Hayes. Having a "true post player" is not essential to fielding a quality basketball team. I like the roster development with the addition of Ramey at the expense of Jacob Young. The icing on the cake is if Snoop stays or Shaka can convince Cremo to sign with Texas.

I'm guessing if Roach comes back, Cremo isn't coming. But if Roach goes, we have a shot at Cremo.

  5. So Joel Klatt went on The Audible podcast, and he gave his thoughts when he visited Texas' spring camp (25:30) :

tl;dl = said when he visited Texas' spring camp last year, that he saw they had a few really good players like Connor and Malik, but other than that they were nothing special. Then says from what he saw this spring camp and they are a changed team and vastly improved, to the point where he expects them to compete for the Big 12 title.
So normally i wouldn't pay this too much mind to this bozo, but Joel has taken any chance he can to throw jabs at the Horns ever since Drew Kelson almost decapitated him, so this has got me confused and wondering if his analysis is real.

If Joel Klatt was skeptical or pessimistic about our team anytime after 2010 he would have been right.
  6. It was gonna be kind of hard to ask the guy responsible for signing Andrew Jones to take a demotion. Morrell did a friend a favor in a tight spot. I’m sure promises were made.
I’ll agree with the rest though. In all honesty, he probably needs a better first chair than DH. This thread is gonna suck if he promotes from within.....

What’s wrong with Horn? I feel like the one consistently positive aspect of Shaka’s tenure has been the development and play of big men?

  7. Judging the roster by experience, Shaka's first class is a bit of a bust with Jacob Young transferring, James Banks on the bench, and Andrew Jones health issues. It means we're still a young team next year as well:

    Dylan Osetkowski - RS Senior

    Kerwin Roach -        True Senior

    Elijah Long  -            RS Junior

    James Banks -        True Junior

    Matt Coleman -       True Soph

    Jericho Sims -         True Soph

    Jase Febres -           True Soph

    Royce Hamm -         True Soph

    Gerald Liddell - True Fresh

    Kemaka Hepa - True Fresh

    Jaxson Hayes - True Fresh

    Brock Cunningham - True Fresh

    Andrew Jones - ?

    Eric Davis - ?
