  1. A couple of years ago I was in Kauai and there was a fruit stand selling white pineapples that had been cut up.

It was $5 for a small container but I wanted to try them so I bought one and brought the container back to the beach and opened it with the family to try.

It was easily the best fruit I've ever tasted.  After we finished it, I decided to go back and buy a bunch more but she only had two containers left.  It was our last full day and I'll likely never taste a pineapple that good again.

Also, to repeat what everyone else said, the best fruit is what is grown locally.  The people who we were staying with grew these tiny bananas in their backyard.  At full size, they were no more than 3 inches. I hardly ever eat bananas from the store but I had these every day I was there the entire 2 weeks.  I'll probably never eat a store bought banana again.

  2. I was 14 and the county agent had recruited several teens to plant trees for a Christmas tree farm.  It was top pay at $5 an hour which sounded like a big deal to my dumb ass when minimum wage was $3.35.  I was the youngest in the group.

We get there and the job seems easy.  Each sapling was only about 9 inches, and you poked a hole in the ground with your finger, moved 3 feet and repeat.

After 8 hours of that, my back was killing me and my knees hurt from crawling in my jeans were soaked at the knees from the mud, but I knew my parents wouldn't let me quit.

I showed up the the next week, the group working was half and the following week it was just me.  The job was only on Saturdays and after about 6 weeks, I finally convinced my parents to let me quit.  That job was lonely and I have no idea what the real purpose planting those saplings served.  It must have been a front for something, but I have no idea what it was.  Forty years later, only a few of those trees grew up and the place never became a Christmas tree farm between then and now.

The main thing I learned from that job was that manual labor was not for me and to be careful about what kind of work you agree to get into.  It's probably a lot harder than it sounds.

  3. There was a little bit of leftover brisket.  Decided to make nachos and discovered we were out of chips.  Looked around and saw baby potatoes and ended up with smashed baby potatoes as the base.  Was halfway through when I decided it was Shank worthy.

I would strongly encourage all of you to download the current talk of Sec Gates here at UT later tonight.  The Russia-China-Iran connectivity is far deeper than I feared.  And this is just what he’s allowed to say.

I've been trying to find a video of this and have no luck.  Does anyone know if a link exists?

Sometimes I get cocky and think I kicked Wordle's ass with a bird.  Wordle comes back with this and puts me in my place.

Posting here instead of the chili thread because, well, I don't want to get murdered.

I grew up in San Antonio.  During high school, we basically lived at a restaurant on Bandera Rd. called Fajita Cocina.  Along with all of the standard Tex-Mex fare was, by far, my favorite menu item.  The chili and cheese taco.  That was over 30 years ago, and I've been chasing the recipe ever since.

    Here is my latest effort:

Ingredients (most of them anyway) are collected.

Dried guajillo and Ancho taking a bath.

    Chicken is seasoned and seared

Tomato, onion, and fresh peppers are ready to join the reconstituted peppers in the blender.

All in the pot with a floated jalapeno

    4 beers later...

Garnished with cilantro, cheese, and raw onion

    Delicious.

I would definitely eat this but help me understand the menu item.  Did this chili and cheese taco have chicken in it and it wasn't mentioned the menu?
