It made sense to schedule those games while in an inferior conference with a 4 team playoff format. There was immense benefit to be won from the risk of that game.
We're in the opposite situation now. In the best conference with a 12 (soon to be 16) team playoff and more potential games.
I'm not saying to schedule an FCS team. I'm saying don't schedule a national title contender. Schedule a Wake Forest or Rutgers or Colorado.
"Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat.”
Good Lord. I cannot fathom the mindset of a person who embraces mediocrity or the easy way out. That person, that school which identifies itself by the conference in which it competes instead of having the conference be identified by the strength and prestige we add. No thank you.

So, in 2012, my son and I go to Mi Cocina (the original one at Preston and Forest). We walk back to bar area, hop in the only two empty seats at the bar. Right next to us is... Sean Payton and his wife. (I guess they had a house at the time in the Coppell (?) area. My son keeps looking over at Payton, Payton starts to squirm a bit, so eventually I think, "Screw it." Turn to my right and say, "Hi Coach. I'm Lid and this is my son Skippy Lid, Jr. He's gonna burst a pipe unless he says hi and can we impose upon you for an autograph." He laughed, was very gracious.
Sat on an airplane once next to Arie Luyendyk, winner of the 1990 Indy 500. A quiet dude.
Took a piss next to Ross Perot once at the Petroleum Club. I did NOT look at him and say, "Nice cock."
On a lesser level, "back in the day," I along with my then scumbag law partner, would go to Sevy's pretty much every Thursday. U.S. District Court Judge Jerry Buchmeyer was there every Thursday. We got to know him and the two people he sat with pretty well. Buchmeyer was a diminutive gentleman, soft spoken. But, he had a penchant for very tall women. The one time I really made him laugh was in 2001, the movie Pearl Harbor came out. We're sitting there, I'm smoking my cigar (yes, you could smoke cigars at the bar back then), looked at everyone and said, "You know, I am not THAT guy who gives away how movies end but in the case of Pearl Harbor, I'm going to. They all look at me like, "sumbitch, you better not!" So, I said ... "The Japanese lose." Buchmeyer looks at me for just a second and busts out laughing. Very smart man.

So, would one of you horse people enlighten me...
After the Derby, there is only one horse in the world who can win the Triple Crown that year.
Yes, three grueling races in 5 weeks is a true test.
But, last year and this year, the Belmont was reduced from its usual 1 1/2 mile to 1 1/4 mile because of the construction at Belmont and Saratoga apparently could not be set up for a 1 1/2 race.
So, wouldn't this year have been less grueling for the nags? I read that the owners of Sovereignty didn't want to exhaust the horse but still ... Triple Crown winners can become iconic. They are rarely forgotten. Yes, Sovereignty looks to be the best 3 year old this year. But, if he has his dick handed to him in the Travers or Breeders Cup, doesn't he become just another horse named Herb instead of a one of 14 (if he had won) elite champions.
Help me understand Obi wan... you're our only hope.

Unpopular opinion time ...
Regarding the Godless, heathen, home to the hillbillies, ou, there has always been a direct correlation between ou cheating/being placed on probation and them winning a national championship. Win a championship... probation in the next two years.
But, at least those bastards won.
Unlike those sheep humpin' fake army, sittin' at the kiddie table at Thanksgiving gomers, aggy. They cheated like hell, as often as they could. Which from 1940 onward, resulted in the same number of national championships as Mary Hardin-Baylor Crusaders.

As in year's past, sat down and watched Saving Private Ryan. For some reason, it was particularly emotional this year.
Then.. I remembered this story. [the talking head needs to learn to shut the hell up!]

Could one of you "Puck Heads" explain why the Leafs are held in such contempt? Dirtbag fans? Jughead Jones like front office? Arrogance of the players?
Inquiring minds want to know.

This is the draft thread. Can you guys post more cheese pics and talk less about the sanders offspring?
There's a Sanders specific thread and there's a lot of longhorns that have been picked and are still in play, plus a lot of other picks to discuss.
Wait, wait, wait.
You are suggesting that Surlytians stay on point? Use facts, reason and logic and submit erudite opinions?
Really?

I hope it works out for you SBB. You’ve been a quality asset to this forum and wish you the best, unless we have to meet head to head in any sport.
I like your school better than your in-town rival. But that special Saturday each Fall, with both wearing “home uniforms” is magic to my old eyes, regardless of outcome. That image is like Thursday at Augusta to me, just a painting in glory.

Had to back in '99 at the Alamo Dome. I'll never forget, I am in line surrounded by Nebraska fans. They are taunting me. I am taunting back, still certain that we are going to kick the st out of Nebraska. I decide to challenge a particularly vocal Nebraska fan to play what I now call and will forever be remembered as "Cell-Phone Flop Out." Remember flop out for a dollar? The rules are similar. I tell this Nebraska jacs that if he's so confident in his team, he should "flop out" his cell phone RIGHT NOW and make plane reservations to Phoenix for the Fiesta Bowl. And then I spoke these memorable words: "And not those dang refundable tickets, either! You request those non-refundable, non-transferrable sons-of-bitches!" He backs down. He is unworthy. I call Southwest Airlines and buy two tickets to Phoenix, non-refundable and non-transferrable. Price: $712. He is humbled. He lowers his head in shame. I raise my cell phone in triumph to the cheers of hundreds of Texas fans. I am KING and these are my subjects. I distribute the 11 beers in my pants to the cheering masses. I RULE the pre game kingdom.
Good times.....
There is a LOT more to that story!
